It was done so that they could have the artificially high salaries, which allows them to renegotiate within the same year, something you can't do if it involves an increase in salary.
We don’t have the whole story.

Can you please stop saying this like it’s a fact. We get that you think you think like a supermodel but you have zero, absolutely zero to back this up.

I AM a supermodel, kiddo. o_O

And he will either retire or play another season or two for the Patriots.

Unless it's one of those hilarious ESPN Sportscenter commercials, you won't see him in another NFL team uniform.

I think the funniest thing about this (which had me LOLing at my desk) is that Andy wrote it. Well-played.
It’s a shame that most of us can’t see it.

(I’m just joking around. No offense to AJ)

So why did the team do this deal other than clear space to bring someone in or make Brady happy?

Very confusing

They were getting scared about what Nick Wright, Shannon Sharpe and The MCI were saying.

Was day 2 of camp really a day off or a holdout day? Conspiracy!

Something is being reported wrong. There would be no reason to sign the deal if it automatically voids.
It just makes no sense. People don’t do things for no reason.

Brady's deal has the Patriots on the record for $30 million for 2020 and $33 million for 2021, setting the salary for next year that can be turned into an extension at any time with some or all guaranteed if both sides agree. They just cannot increase the salary in the deal before it voids at the end of the NFL year. Both sides got an agreed upon salary for next year and either can simply let the deal void if it isn't the right thing to do for a 43-year old quarterback who is contemplating moving to NYC.

I think this also tells all the other teams that the Patriots are serious about TFB ending his career in Foxborough, so if you want him you better be prepared to cough up serious money for a 44-year-old. That 2021 year is important. Brady clearly wasn't going to sign anything that didn't get him to the year he turned 45. That is an important signal to any suitors.

I don’t see why they would necessarily have to wait until the season is over, though. I stated the “end of season” (let’s hope early February) just because they probably wouldn’t want to mess with it during games. I don’t think there would be anything preventing them from extending him before the end of the league year, would there? The pact expires at the end of the league year, that’s all.
Idk, Pats have never signed a deal like this before. I'll let one of the geniuses on the forum address this because I'm confused with all the tweets coming out.

Through a jet fans eyes he Might but a 400lb woman looks good to a guy who has been sleeping with a 500 lb woman with a mustache.
You're on a roll. I like this funny side of you Andy, you should try it more often. Hilarious.

The deal did the following

1) gave Brady $8M over and above his 2019 contracted amount

2) freed up some cap space (it could be use to bring in a player, or more likely, extend a player

3) made Brady a free agent at the end of the season

4) prevents any new contract before the end of the season unless it is a lowball deal

5) prohibited the patriots from franchising or transitioning Brady
=====
BOTTOM LINE
2019 is settled. Brady is a free agent at the end of the season. While Brady is 90% likely to continue here or retire, any team can contact him at the end of the season.

It was just yesterday Andy playfully implied I work at Costco.

The man is absolutely capable of humor.

We don’t have the whole story.
Those are the rules and that's what it is generally the reason for 'void year' contracts. The Saints did it with Brees.

The contract could be renegotiated exactly the way this one was. Y'all should read the write up Miguel did on the contract.

Do you happen to have a link, rochrist? I’m curious to see his thoughts. Thanks.

All of that has been reported. My question is when can the team re-structure or extend the deal? Anytime as some here are reporting? Or does it have to wait until the 2 day period for UFA right before the end of the season? $30M for 2020 is at or below market so he would have to take less to re-structure before end of season? What would be the purpose of that, to push bonuses down the road again?

Can you elaborate on this a bit? What constitutes a lowball deal? I’m assuming that it couldn’t exceed the amount for the recently negotiated 2019 figure. Is that correct? If so, what could we be looking at?

If he’s not able to sign anything other than a lowball deal, where does that leave us?
