Michael Thomas and Saints reach 100M deal

Great player but this would never happen under BB.
We need to get used to if we land a top receiver in the draft in 4 years he's either being franchised and traded or he walks.
The Saints are not run like the Pats

Sure wish we had their Wide Out Scouts though.

I thought QBs like Brees afford you the luxury of not having to reach for receivers like that. Can he not make much happen without all stars?

What I'm getting at is, would it not have behooved them to spend a decent chunk of hat on their defense? How are they going to pay Kamara, who only makes Thomas's job that much easier?

And vice/versa you know Thomas is one of the better WR's in the Game right??

I am of the belief that Thomas is top 2 in the league, duking it out with Julio.

He's a very good player but he isn't THAT level of player.

There is a small but clear difference between guys like Michael Thomas and Julio Jones.

And that little bit of difference is what makes one player worth extending to this length for and the other not. One player is good enough to change the way the defense has to play you and one isn't. Being just that extra bit better makes a huge difference.

Personally I think the Saints would have been better off spending this money else where.

Thomas > in RZ nuff said!

this just in... The Saints can't manage thier cap.

So if N'keal Harry turns out to be a super-star WR, we get the pleasure of seeing him play in a Raiders or Red Skins uniform in 2024. I'm conflicted.
Who cares who is losing elsewhere while we are winning.
It’s a capped sport. Almost by definition players that go to the highest bidder (or get highest bidder money before being free) are poor value.
The analogy I like to use is if you have 150 a week for food you can spend just over 20 bucks a day and eat well each day or you can go out to dinner one night spend 100 on a great meal then scramble the next 6 days to eat on 8 bucks a day.
If Michael Thomas catches 150 passes the saints will play about 1850 plays that his value is near zero.

I'm perfectly fine with the Saints splashing $20 million per on a guy who buckled under the spotlight and couldn't come through in the clutch for them in the NFC Championship game. It makes his prior performance against the Eagles irrelevant. It's a shame as I like the Saints but sexy regular season stats win you nothing. Can't wait to see what Kamara commands.

Saints of the last decade or so.
When they are at their best they are like the patriots. All the other years they are paying for taxing the cap to be that good.
Could be, probably is, 2nd best coach and 2nd best QB, and since they arrived, 13 years later they have had:
7 playoff years 6 non playoff years
3 12+ win seasons (all 13-3) 5 losing seasons (all 7-9)
8 playoff wins (patriots have had 19)
3 conf champ game appearances
1 SB
Overall w/l of 127-83 (just a little worse than 10-6) and 8-6 postseason.

Sounds a lot like a team with a great hc great QBs that does a bad job managing the cap.

Saints will be fine for the next few years. Brees is gone in 1-2 years, Lattimore, Ramscyzk, Kamara, etc. are all on rookie deals, and when they need contract extensions, just use the Brees money to help out. Let's not all be jealous and say the Saints don't know cap management when they clearly do.

If we had drafted Michael Thomas, I'm sure everyone would be clamoring for us to re-sign him. And when we have a Top 3 WR in the league, we probably would.

This is awesome. This kind of ridiculous overspending is one of the major reasons BB has NE in the SB convo every year. Let them. Even if he is a ProBowl wr for the next four years, it won’t be a good investment.

Imagine if he spends some time on the IR...

An average NFL WR catches maybe 3 balls per game and probably earns $1-5 million.
An elite NFL WR catches 6 passes per game and earns 4 to 20 times the wages of an average WR.
A busy NFL QB might pass the ball 40-50 times per game and complete on average 6 passes to the $20 million WR. This QB who completes his 6 passes to his star WR earns the same or a few ($5-10)million more than the guy who manages 1.5 catches per quarter.

As of early July.....
  • 1. Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr.: $18 million
  • 2. Raiders WR Antonio Brown: $16.7 million
  • 3. Buccaneers WR Mike Evans: $16.5 million
  • 4. Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins: $16.2 million
  • 5. Rams WR Brandin Cooks: $16.2 million
  • 6. Vikings WR Adam Thielen: $16.2 million
  • 7. Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins: $16 million
  • 8. Browns WR Jarvis Landry: $15.1 million
  • 9. Bengals WR A.J. Green: $15 million
  • 10. Packers WR Davante Adams: $14.5 million
  • Now Include Thomas (NO), Jones (ATL)
  • Honorable mention Fitzgerald (Ariz)
Question: How many trophies have members of this super wealthy WR group hoisted?

Note: Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and nuclear detonation
