Brady is not a checkdown passer

The stats in the article (and more besides) can also be found here on this not quite as well named thread:

Check out PFF's Steve Palazzolo's tweets.

Definitely worth looking at. The one that really caught my eye was Brady not being in the top ten for number of passes thrown at or behind the line of scrimmage over the last 3 years. Kind of amazing when when you consider the sheer number of passes he's thrown that volume alone didn't put him on that list.

Anyone with honesty and a brain already knew this.

Of course anyone with "honesty and a brain" would appreciate what Brady has accomplished even if they despised who he did it for (more precisely for who he's done it to). Case in point, I despised Shula's Dolphins and before there was ever Manning face there was Marino's. That doesn't keep me from acknowledging he probably had the quickest release and was one of the best pure passers of all the QB's I've ever seen play.

Even when defenders came in untouched Marino could get off an accurate pass. Just like Brady. Maybe Shula held him back

Dirty Don has more wins than any HC in the history of the game but it might be fair to say he underachieved where it mattered most

While I knew this...some of the numbers were surprising to me...like Brady being 9th in the league for most passes thrown under 10 yards. I never thought Brady was a check down guy, but he sure as hell utilizes mid-distance passes.

There's already a thread on this. PFF is Snake oil junk! Glad to see the tears of the salty Brady haters on twitter though. That about sums it up.

9th really isn’t very high considering it’s a 3 year period and there aren’t all that many QBs who played must of all 3 years.

I’ll just leave this here...

2-4 in Super Bowls and 19-17 overall in the playoffs with one of the all time best QBs......(for part of the playoffs)

Alex Smith is a checkdown passer. Tom Brady is a master of the quick draw which means a lot of laser beams in the 6-25 yard range, but he's certainly more than capable of loading up for a big throw when required.

Shula Playoffs

Without Marino- 13-10
With Marino- 6-7

Yea however I do think Shula's 71, 82 and 84 teams were outmatched in the SB. He blew it vs the Colts. No excuse. The problem is Ewbank knew the Colts.

From the 60s to the early 80s, Shula always had decent running games and good defenses. Once Marino showed up he stopped doing both.

Patriots don't have the personnel for an Alex Smith style checkdown offense. They do have the personnel for the hot read and Brady is the master of that.

Anyone who says Brady is a checkdown passer either is trying to get a rise out of Pats fans or hasn't watched football since 2002.

It sure seems to me that when they were active, a lot of people considered Shula one of the best HCs in the league and Marino one of the best QB’s in the league, yet they got 1 conference championship and 0 rings.
Hmmmmmmm
