Ty Law makes one final pick: His Hall of Fame presenter
4. A first after Patriots' sixth title -- no White House visit: After the Patriots won their first five Super Bowls, they visited the White House on the following dates:

  • April 2, 2002

  • May 10, 2004

  • April 13, 2005

  • April 23, 2015

  • April 19, 2017
The club hasn't visited this year, and now that April and May have passed, it makes a sixth visit more of a logistical challenge, in part because players and coaches are taking final vacations before the start of training camp.

That might be a disappointment to some who would cherish the experience, but at the same time, it eliminates some of the recent hubbub involving teams from all sports in which who attends or doesn't attend becomes a bigger story than the actual White House visit itself.
It sounds like it may not happen this summer, given that TC is right around the corner. I’m guessing at this point if there is a visit it will take place right before the Redskins game in October...

No matter who's in the white house, watching a politician pretend he cares about a championship team is something I couldn't care less about anyway.

I think our politics have become sufficiently radioactive that no team owner should want their team visiting any politician. It accomplishes nothing but dividing the team itself and alienating a large share of the fanbase.

The main reason I like these visits is so I can share the picture on Facebook of Belichick and the current President and say "pictured in this photo is the most powerful man in the world. Standing next to him is the President of the United States"

Besides that, I don't care about them going at all.

I think all players should go to the White House TBH. Tim Thomas started the whole thing back in 2011...and players from other leagues have followed suit. People like Meghan Rapinoe should quit being a baby.

Belichick 2020

Nothing can top this picture. Nothing.

Just think about his press briefings for a minute.

Mr President, how do you feel about the situation in North Korea?

I think you should go. Seriously, just tell 'em you're there representing the Patriots and you want a photo shoot with the President or at least a photo bomb because you understand it's all about honoring the team and their success and effort. I'm sure any President would totally agree with you and make it about the team.

(sigh) Bird, Max and Parish say hello as do Michael Jordan, James Harrison and others from well before 2011

It’s starting to get out of hand. It used to be a special thing. Then they started inviting all 4 of the major U.S. sports. Then college football and basketball. And since we have to pretend womens’ sports is just as entertaining and widely followed as men’s sports, they started inviting WNBA and women’s college hoops. Then it moved to Olympic Champions and Women’s World Cup when the US wins.

In this day and age the media is more interested in stoking controversy than merely reporting news, so we now are bombarded with reports of who has been invited, who is going, who is not going and why. I really just wish the issue would go away.

When I saw the news, my first thought was "we need a thread".

That crap started long before Tim Thomas, including teams from Pittsburgh and the Red Socks. The major difference is that Thomas took plenty of heat while those others didn't.

This country is the most prosperous and philanthropic of any country in the world. Every day I wake up I realize how lucky I am that my grandfather settled here (legally).

I’m fine with players skipping the WH for legitimate reasons. I don’t consider political disagreements to be legitimate, however. Thomas was pretty vocal about it. Bird and Jordan may have skipped meeting Reagan, but they did so quietly. Nowadays just about every player who declines the WH invitation is outspoken about their disagreement with the President...

There are lots of things I could say in this space. Instead, I will just say that I am glad they are not visiting with this President.

Women's World Cup win is a big deal IMO. The men have to buy tickets to get to a championship game. I would say it's a bigger deal than any of the major 4 sports going, not going, or whatever else. This coming from a anti-soccer guy.

"It's starting to get out of hand. First they started inviting athletes from sports I arbitrarily consider legitimate, then they started inviting athletes from sports I don't arbitrarily consider legitimate!"

Exactly. It's gotten so bad that whether or not a person attends now defines them. If you go or not go it must mean you stand for this that or the other thing. Then that somehow tells you if you should even like them anymore or not.

Once again the First Law of Holes comes to mind.
Bird played in a different media age but he certainly wasn't quiet about it, "If the president wants to see me, he knows where to find me."
As a result of being hounded by the media Thomas released a statement that clearly said it wasn't about the specific individual in The White House but rather our government as a whole. Thomas was/is a flake but outside of his statement he wasn't vocal at all.

The president seemed like quite a committed fan of whomever the "Red Socks" are!

it used to be a special thing because the President used to be a special person..........now it's just some @sshole making a fool out of himself and his supporters
