My thoughts on Sony Michel

My thoughts on Sony Michel are that he is a good running back, but I am concerned that he is starting his first two years on the team coming off of surgery...He was great down the stretch last year and I hope he can stay healthy enough to be that good again.

I have the indefensible opinion that he’s going to lead the league in rushing this year. It’s just a feeling I have that goes against all logic and history.

It’s the line, Brady’s age, questions at TE and receiver that create a perfect storm for Michel.

Someone on Reddit charted the toughest RBs to bring down by solo tackle percentage. That may not be the best metric, but it's still interesting. Sony is the 9th best on this fan-made list.

Link to the Google doc: Toughest backs to solo tackle.

My thoughts on Sony Michel are, the Patriots don't win the Super Bowl without him.

If you watch his college highlights, you see he often gets caught from behind when he breaks into the secondary.

You know the pros are even faster.
He obviously lacks that second gear with those short legs.

I thought that you were paraphrasing, to humorous effect, the opening sentence of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Yes...then of course I was! I’ll take a bow now.

I don't think he'll get enough carries to reach these numbers. If Michel stays healthy, it'll be a good sign if he doesn't get the carries, because it means the other backs are producing and not injured.

I would expect him to get the same amount of carries as he did last year. Same efficiency and staying healthy equals 1,200+ yards and 10+ TDs

agreed. He is a mid 4.5 speed RB. I don't view that as much of an issue as 50 yard runs are rare in the NFL anyway even for speedsters. It comes down to elusiveness and vision and I think we will sign another leap there this year. 4 OL return and Michel ran behind Wynn at Georgia. So we might actually see an uptick in ypc.

Sony will be faster than brandin cooks this year. 19-0!

I like running backs who always get positive yards and average 4-5 yards a carry, rather than the ones who are constantly caught in the backfield but break a long run every now and then and end up with a 4-5 yards a carry average. The latter makes the espn highlights, but usually plays on losing teams. The former sustains drives and helps win games. Sony seemed to be the guy that always gets 4-5 yards. Not flashy, just a good solid back.

Often caught from behind...
Short legs..
Pros are faster...
Lacks second gear..

We might as well cut him now and spare you the agony of having to watch him. I'm sure no one will pick him up.

This.

Give me 10 4yd gains over 1 40yd gain any day of the week.

Last season I really wanted to like Sony Michel but nothing really seemed to stick out to me about him.

He had:
Pretty good speed.
Pretty good agility.
Pretty good power.
Pretty good acceleration.
Pretty good hands.
Pretty good at breaking tackles.

How was this guy doing much better than just pretty good?

Answer: Exceptional vision.

He always seems to take the most efficient and optimal path to get the most amount of yardage given his physical ability. Here's a great video to see if you agree.

Some might think this a stretch but talking with my son off season I mentioned that Sony reminded me of Emmit Smith. Didn't look exceptionally fast or powerful but just got the job done. I do agree vision is a discriminator. He just seems to make the right read and right cut.

I don't know how many negative carries he had. But it seemed like he always gets at least 1-2 yards each carry.

Does he have practice squad eligibility left?

I hope this isn't the case. The guy has limited tread wear, and I'd rather reduce the fatigue and thus the injury likelihood. Hopefully the rookie from Alabama will pick up a big chunk of the carries, because he delivers the production, allowing for RB by committee this year.

Michel dances while still moving towards the line of scrimmage

Just think what we could have done last year if we had had a serviceable back.
