An insight into why the Pats' D was so good at the end of the season

Jamie Collins...cover the (RB/TE) receiver???

I'll try to find time to show some of his positive traits in coverage. It's hard to forget those two TDs he gave up in Denver, but on certain routes, Collins is quite solid. My guess is that Bill will put him in a position to succeed more often than not, particularly since we use subpackages more frequently than when he was here before. Likely he won't be tasked with deep coverage as much. While he may not become a mainstay, he could prove a nice chess piece.

He will help the pass rush.

Yes. He can. If you want to bring 3 plays into question thats fine. The D f-ed up on two of them

Jamie is just like Chung in this regard. Anything within 10-15yds hes fine. Anything beyond that it's a concern.

Just a thought. It seems to me that just like in the NBA, the NFL is trending more and more to having a more "positionless" aspect to its line ups. Things like SS, FS have less meaning. You have DB's playing LB and LB's' playing on the DL.

When the Pats failed to draft a DLman high, I was concerned, but I'm a lot less concerned now. Again, just my OPINION, but the Pats may have the best 1-10 secondary in the league, and the LB's aren't far behind (assuming Bentley plays like he did last season). The addition of Jamie Collins might end up being thought of as one of the 5 best FA acquisitions in the league when all is said and done. And I wouldn't be shocked to see Rivers come out of no where to add significant depth to the LB/DL mix. Just sayin'

I look for Danny Shelton to improve his play. I'd be thrilled to get 85% of the 2014 Michael Bennett. I expect another DLman to be added sometime before the season starts. I still hope for perhaps a trade with the Niners for Solomon Thomas, who needs a fresh start.

With the strength we have at LB and in the Secondary, all we need from the DL is to be the same as last year. A lot of "good"no name, try hard players who can scheme enough pressure to compliment our 2 strengths.

Mahomes, you may have an argument, although he did play the same team a couple of months earlier.

Goff's a 3-year starter. I'd hardly call that 'very inexperienced'.

Goff himself was way overreached in the draft, I watched pac-12 football in college and always thought he was overrated. He was babied by the Rams coaching staff and matter of fact I think of a poor man's Mark Sanchez is who he really is...

One could argue it worked just fine against Rodgers. He only completed 55% of his passes (24 of 43), barely managed 17 points, and couldn't get a single thing done in the 4th quarter when it mattered. Look at every 4th quarter play he had in the game, starting when it was still 17 - 24:

Kickoff
S.Gostkowski kicks 65 yards from NE 35 to end zone, Touchback.

Three straight incompletions. Game.

Ha, I still had the impression of him when he played against us that year when we had Revis Island and also won the superbowl, he killed our defence that year..but that was in Lambo.

And I wouldn't be shocked to see Rivers come out of no where to add significant depth to the LB/DL mix. Just sayin'.
Puff, puff, pass, Ken.

I'm bullish on what the D is going to provide this season Ken, so much so it wouldn't surprise me to see them become one of the better units in the NFL. The amount of talent, depth and playmakers, on every level, is the best it's been in years.

Our defense this year will give up less than ten points a game. Going to be like the 85 bears

Yep.

...and I'm one of the ones who trashed him for freelancing. The question is why was he freelancing? Chasing stats and big plays or bad reads ?

What we do know is Jamie and Bill are ok giving it another shot and so am I. :p

I can't speak for the cause, but the results spoke for themselves: his last season, the Pats were giving up more yards per play against the run and against the pass when he was on the field.

And max kellerman will say he is falling off the cliff even now
