why health insurance?

via https://www.bizjournals.com/boston/...o-has-a-new-title-executive-in-residence.html:
“I am very excited to be a rookie once again, this time with a growing and progressive company devoted to helping people who need help the most,” Mayo said in a statement. “The more I learned about the people of Optum and their passion to improve millions of lives through their work, the more I wanted to be part of their team. I am confident my passion, interests and skills are a strong match for this role.”

A blurb about the coaches on defense from Reiss' weekly Sunday column:

Here is a look at who's left/hired on that side of the ball and their projected primary responsibility based on where they worked most last season:

  • Defensive line: Bret Bielema

  • Safeties: Steve Belichick

  • Coaching assistant/linebackers: DeMarcus Covington

  • Pass-rush specialist: Joe Kim

  • Coaching assistant/linebackers: Jerod Mayo (new hire)
Schiano was expected to play a leading role, with his expertise in the secondary potentially pairing nicely with Belichick's work with the front seven. That leaves a significant void.

I agree with Reiss that the combination of Schiano bringing in his DB experience (into a Rutgers dominated DB room nevertheless) combined with BB continuing to work on the DL would have been pretty sweet.

Curious how it shakes out but I am really not a fan of BB spreading himself to thin and reducing his impact on the usual HC stuff. McDaniels, Judge and maybe even Ernie will have to step up a bit if that happens.

I heard somewhere that “it’s what’s on the inside that counts” but I have a hard time looking a Bielema and thinking “defensive genius”. I know that he ran a successful program in Arkansas and bagged smoking hot wife (although I prefer brunettes) but when I see photos of him I mainly think of this iconic movie character:

Is this the point where I should post a pic of the fat ****s that are Charlie Weis or Romeo Crennel ?

Well there you go, the expected move upwards.

Interesting how being a position coach for another position is considered a promotion

I specifically didn't call it promotion but move upwards with the expectation that BB wants him to have a well rounded understanding of the most important positional groups.

If this was anyone else where the expectation was not "eventual DC" then it would not register at all.

So much for this then. Weird error in a normally perfectly micromanaged organization.

My guess is that there are a handful of changes in responsibility among the returning coaches, but only one of them made it into this press release. In particular, I don't know who the heck would be the WR coach if both Caley and Judge were returning in their same roles.

Caley is really the only one that makes sense. Maybe they move Brian Belichick to offense this year.

Think for Judge going from ST coordinator to anything but OC or DC would be a step down.

Hell I bet Brian could already be DC for 1/2 of the NFL teams out there.

I think the idea was that he could do both STs and WRs. I don’t see any ST coordinator doing double duty right now, but it’s very common in college and John Harbaugh did STs and DBs for the Eagles in 2007. It sounds like Judge wants to keep moving up in the coaching ranks, and that’s not going to happen very easily until he expands his experience beyond just STs.

Looks like he was a LB coach back in 2008.

Maybe thats the plan. Make JJ LB coach/DC without the full load (ala Patricia in 2010 and Flo last year) and promote Achord to STC

This is all based on a short blurb from Reiss, with basically the only useful detail being that it would be on offense.

Bill Belichick, Patriots considering unique option on coaching staff

I’m assuming that Lombardi will be replacing Schuplinski as assistant QB coach (likely also without the official title), which would leave WRs as the only opening. I guess Caley to WRs and Judge doing STs and TEs would work too.

Oh I didn't see Reiss' blurb. Interesting

For what it is worth whoever edits the Pats coaching staff page on Wikipedia has Lombardi as assistant QB coach. Might totally happened based on same blurb you are referencing.

BB is often cited for having a very lean coaching staff, one of the fewest in the NFL if I remember correctly, but right now the coaching staff is leaner than usual.. "lean mean fighting machines"... so those 20 hour works days will be extended to 22 hour work days. Break out the cots in the weight room..

Still no update on roles for Fraser or Mayo.
