McCown Offers Bold Julian Edelman Take

Are we homers? Sure, but no other receiver on that list has gotten as far in his career as Jules has. Not even close, as some have said above. McCown is right if "most clutch" is part of the equation.

Yep

Again, it’s the criteria you apply. He won’t win the physical metrics but take the plays he made when they were needed most, and tie it to touches, and you have one of the great winner’s you will ever find.

what numbers are you talking about? If Hopkins would play his entire career with Brady, he would be regarded as the best WR of all time.

Context is badly needed.
Couldn't agree more with your last sentence. Just not in the way you seemingly intended it.

Julio seems pretty damn clutch to me. He made some insane catches in SB51. That toe tap while snagging it right above Rowe, who believe or not was actually covering him quite well on that catch, was ridiculous.

He definitely did what was necessary and then some.

They've been discussing his lack of red zone production and drops down here in GA over the last few years. And now they're discussing whether his new mega contract hurts the team more than he helps it.

IIRC, he only had four receptions in SB51 but yes that catch was remarkable.

He had only 4 TARGETS in SB 51. Can you imagine Edelman getting targeted 4 times in a Super Bowl?

Atlanta was spreading the ball around. It worked out well. 28 points in 32 minutes. Playing it safe killed them

Or was it being aggressive that killed them? Getting sacked after the last Jones catch when a FG likely wins? Best receiver in the NFL with 4 targets in a Super Bowl = FAIL

It was terrible play calling. First they were hesitant and when they should have ran the ball, they got sacked

Wow, my memory is getting foggy.
I thought the was media absolutely killing the Falcons for not playing it safe and they "gave" the Patriots a chance by not running the ball and burning clock.
Am I remembering that wrong?

Agreed - they didn’t target their best player more. And they only scored 21 on offense

Actually 21 since 7 were on the Pick 6....

Has any WR ever had a better playoffs than Edelman did last year? Not purely from a numbers standpoint, but from being the dominant WR in each game and making clutch plays. Even in the LA Chargers game, getting the first down by fighting for it on the 2nd drive set the tone and took the starch out of the Chargers. There have been great games, but that set of 3 games by Edelman might be the benchmark.

He’s uncoverable because his skill set is great in our offense and he’s been in it forever. Put him on the Falcons and ask him to do what Julio Jones does and he’s out of the league. I love Julian Edelman but this notion that he’s a more talented receiver is ridiculous. You want to say he’s the best slot receiver? Hands down. But better than Jones, Hopkins, or Brown? No way.

He's not a slot receiver. Never has been.
Catches as many balls outside the numbers as in.

"all Patriots players suck and I want every star I see on any other team but I keep my mouth shut because...well..."Six Bowls" duct tape is covering my pinhead mouth"

Trying to ask Julian Edelman to be Julio Jones or vice versa is about as rational as asking a kicker to play safety.

As one example, looking specifically at the playoffs:

Julio Jones: 8 games, 17 of 19 on 3rd and 4th downs, for 13 first downs
Julian Edelman: 18 games, 35 of 49 on 3rd and 4th downs, for 33 first downs

If Jones were to produce at the same rate over 18 games his line would be:
38.25 of 42.75 on 3rd and 4th downs, for 29.25 first downs.

So they are producing at a similar rate.

Once Atlanta had the big lead all they needed to do was let the play clock run down before snapping the ball and the Pats wouldn't have had time to catch up. I'm glad they didn't do that.

I've seen Edelman make some truly incredible plays over the years. He has a knack for squeezing out every yard from plays, both running and receiving. I wouldn't trade him for anyone.

Or it’s “the Saints have so many options there’s no need to force it to him”
or Drew Brees fell off the proverbial cliff the last part of the season. He was terrible their last half dozen or so games.

That's a little harsh...
First 11 games completion--- 76.9% -------TD/Int 29:2 team went 10-1
Last 7 (inc playoffs ---------69.7%----------TD/Int 11:6 team went 5-2

Decline, yes. A cliff? hardly. Only 3 QBs had a higher completion percentage than 69% ( Cousins, Wentz and Ryan)
