It almost does though. Like, are we really supposed to be asking more of this guy, and to have professional standards, if his bosses are encouraging, if not directing him to do it?
From my albeit limited experience in the industry, I doubt they’re encouraging it. But I don’t think they’re cracking down too hard on stuff like that either.

It's the same thing though. The Globe is behind a paywall online or you need to pay money for the hard copy. But the moment Volin's article was published, people on the internet, radio, and TV starting talking about it. Which likely drove some people to the Globe's website to read it. And while most people saw a paywall and said screw it, some of them decided to sign up. They probably got more sign ups Monday than they had in the prior 60 days. From the Globe's perspective, it's a win.
I seriously doubt that Ben Volin has been responsible for a single subscription.

About time we get some more Dave Brown links posted here. He has been the voice of reason among the hot take beat guys for 2-3 years (or even longer) now. Among the best in the business.

He even survived an attempt at murdering his career by Bedard.

Jack has his sights set way higher than character coach. Which is fine but he could have advanced his career without being Judas.
Makes me wonder if he wasn’t the guy talking to ESPN about the rift between BB and TB. It’s not a big leap from Easterby to Easterbrook.

You have greater faith in humanity than I do. I see a world where the trolls own the airwaves because saying something controversial gets more attention than saying something factual. I hope to regain your optimism someday.

Nothing optimistic about it. I just think Volin is such a ****ty writer that he won't move the needle an inch.

So, he's reporting his "analysis" (nice euphemism for opinion) as the facts of the story? Sounds like every other major news outlet today.

No.

He went back and forth on different days this week stating first that it was an "opinion" piece, then that it was "reporting". He is confused and someone needs to hold his hand when crossing the street.

He doesn't know his ass from his elbow when it comes to journalism. He is the MCI for a reason.

Journalism in 2019 is a far cry from Edward R. Murrow and Eric Severeid, but it generally isn't as bad as this guy. Most of us can't stand Borges or Wickersham, however nobody ever said they were incompetent. He's a special case.

.

So, I'm catching up on 37 pages here: Does everyone on the Pats hate each other again?

Summary: Yes...the end is nigh....Tommy will be pushed over the cliff by Belichick....Stidham is the new QB!

This kind of reporting has been proven time and time again to either not be true at all, or be an insanely overblown think piece based on the smallest kernel of truth.

BB: "I'm thirsty"
Reporter: "BB Is Subject To Inhumane Expectations; Wants Out"

Well since this topic is now ALL about the issue of "speculation" I'm going to do a bit of my own.

The other day Chris Price of BSJ did his first and Ten column where he comments on and/0r provides links to Patriot related topics written by others on a daily basis. Usually if you ask a question in the comments section he will reply.

Well on this day one of his links was to Bedard's column on the Casserio saga and Volin's suspect role in it. So I asked him directly what does a hard working guy like him (and so many other good guys who cover the Pats) think of Ben Volin who does little but write these connect the dots stories that all of us speculate about, but HE reports them as fact.

Here is his response:

Ken, appreciate the passion and your argument, as well as your nice words. My own two cents? I make it a personal policy not to comment when it comes to how another reporter does his job--my goal is to take care of my own corner of the world. My feeling is I have enough to worry about over here without worrying about how someone else conducts their business. As a reporter, my philosophy is simple: Work hard, be honest and transparent, and let the results speak for themselves. It hasn't necessarily gotten me to the top of the media food chain, but I can sleep well at night.

I responded that it wasn't what I wanted to see, but given that he is such a professional, it was what I was expecting. I also noted that I can take some solace that since Volin just became a dad, I can count on HIM not being able to sleep well at night....a least for a few months. So on to MY speculation.

1. Note there wasn't a breath of a defense of Volin. No, "well, Ben is a great guy". l No, well, I can tell you that Ben works hard", not even, well Ben is a good writter", ( which always been Borges' best defense, that low life maggot, but that's another story). Nothing! He didn't even offer, "well, he's wrong here, but usually......" It wasn't like he damned him with "faint praise" He damned him by saying NOTHING!

2. Note that he addressed me by my first name and thanked me. So clearly we are now best bro's, and I am his professional equal....only without credentials, a job or published accomplishments. ;)

Boy this SPECULATION stuff is fun!!!!!

Here's Bedard weighing in on Volin:

"Look at the “writer” and his track record. There are people who know what they’re doing, and those who don’t and try to look like they do."
Also:

"I don’t know, I don’t listen to or read anything said person does. I don’t like to waste my time.

I did notice how he touted his originally reported Easterby leaving story when it was co-bylined by Nora Princiotti, who works her tail off."

How does Volin still have a job? Which fools are paying him?

???

You might consider all the writers that cover the patriots. How many times have each of their columns/tweets/blogs been read in the last week?

The open question is whether a "more accurate" writer than Volin would generate more hits and more money? Apparently, the judgement by his employers is "no".

Ti out it simply, sports reporting is a business, and it is very difficult to get any readership at all in June and July.
