I've seen several tweets (one from Karen Guregian) referencing a piece by Bedard today about the Caserio/Easterby/Belichick situation. It sounded real interesting, but the BSJ requires a subscription. Anyone here read it?

Yes, I mentioned it earlier. It makes more sense than Volin's mental meanderings, plus it has sources unlike Volin.

The news outlets should be embarrassed. They picked up an opinion piece and labelled it as fact.

Totally ridiculous how so many news outlets picked it up as a report. Volin should be (but clearly isn’t) embarrassed.

Plenty of reasons.

1. Same offense. Caserio is already set up to find players that fit that scheme.
2. Obviously Caserio and BOB have a good relationship and can trust each other.
3. Caserio walks in and gets complete control over the draft and FA decisions with no objections by BOB.
4. The AFCS is wide open with no dominant team like the Steelers, Pats and now Chiefs.
5. Watson is young and could very well be the best QB in that division. Luck is a Choker getting long in the tooth.
Agreed that it’s a great fit but not easy to speculate on how much control he would have over the draft and FA decisions. It is possible that the Gaine firing was about BOB consolidating control over final decisions (similar to BB). He might have similar control that he has in NE.

Yeah, they had him on radio in Texas and he pretty much walked it back to 'whoa whoa whoa, this wasn't a REPORT! This was my super stable genius level figgerin'.'
Once Volin saw most everyone wasn't buying his "report" he realized he better spin it into something else. His problem is he fancies himself as a legitimate mainstream journalist that's smarter than his audience. Time after time he gets caught stepping in it and thent has to backtrack. Then in order to feel relevant again he writes more bull-****.

Exactly.

There are two types of GMs.

There are the GMs that dictate the system, financial and organizational philosophy, player-type, playing-style/scheme and defining the type of HC is to coach the team. In this scenario, see Ron Wolff, Jim Finks, A-hole Polian, Ozzie, Lynch, Quinn, etc.

There is the other type of GM that "shops for the groceries" based on the dinner the coach wants to cook. Caserio is that GM IMO here.

I firmly believe BOB falls in the latter category and it is very unclear if Caserio will have final say on who the draft and sign in HOU.

Volin just retracted his retraction. He’s now calling it a report again and not an opinion.

Can’t make this **** up.

The 'Nick Caserio Wants Out' Story Is Now Back To Being A Report, Not Just An Opinion

Maybe he was scared of being fired and has decided to defend it as a report since it was written so definitively, and just claim some anon sources like everyone does.
Matt Pepin is Trollin's boss at the Globe. He must have told him what to do.

With that said Pepin needs to get Trollin under control....or is the plan for Trollin to be a clickbait machine?

The news outlets should be embarrassed. They picked up an opinion piece and labelled it as fact.
Are you kidding? It is an article which has generated a lot of discussion and a lot of hits. They're not embarrassed or ashamed, they're happy with the response they're getting.

I highly, highly doubt he would leave for what is truly nothing more than a lateral move to another organization.

Agree.

After reading what Trollin said I am completely blown away by his (and the Globe's) standard of what information is required to support a "report".

It's a sad commentary regarding journalism today. Since when do assumptions and piecing together circumstances by a "journalist" are a "report"

Trollin's belief is because of his time reporting on the team and conversations he has a had, he believes Caserio wants out of NE. No team sources. No league sources. Nothing. His standing as an authority around here is already non-existent and this crap further validates that.

I remember vividly Willie McDonough saying on TV after the AFCCG in 1997, "I believe, but need to check with a few more folks Bill Parcells will be resigning from the Patriots and heading to the Jets.".

The difference between what Willie said is A) he had major street cred and B) He set the expectation that Tuna leaving was HIS belief but he needed to confirm it.

I actually would have been ok if the piece was titled "Op/Ed" . At least the reader knows the belief is not supported by sources.

This is what happens when newspapers are in financial difficulty or in an incredibly competitive market. They lower their standards and enable slackers like Trollin to mislead their audience by stating rumors as facts.

Sickening and pathetic.

You are right, and it is truly sad. It's been that way for a while now. It doesn't matter whether its true or not, if you get the "clicks" its a win.

Agree.

I'm thinking that perhaps the thing that frustrates us so much about Volin is that he is just doing what WE do here, but not as well.....and get PAID for it. Wouldn't we all love ONE day with the access he gets.

What Volin does is connect POTENTIAL dots, form and opinion, then reports it as fact. He's an embarrassment to all the hard working guys who actually do the leg work to offer their customers real insights on the Patriots.

What Volin writes is what you'll get on any Patriots' fan sites, only not as good Every week, Volin would win the "keen sense of the obvious" award. He's a FRAUD! I only wish more professionals would come out and call him on this, since it looks like he's digging in on his position.

I read the WEEI report and he acts like a 5 year old. "I know things. People don't think I have sources, but I've covered the team for 6 years. I know things"

God! its pathetic.

Agree. Hes awful.

It makes me sad how low of a standard the Globe Sports section has reduced itself to.

I'm still not convinced Caserio wanted to interview for the job WITH THE INTENTION of leaving but moron Volin states it as fact. I've interviewed for positions just to establish connections and branch out my network and/or gather intelligence on a competitor.

He may indeed be right but as we've established its more of an informed opinion- not a fact.

Sports writers in Boston get significantly longer leashes than most (see: Borges, Wrong; Tom-ass-e, John).

Soo.. Volin backs up his opinion piece with the opinion that he feels that his opinion is actually a report.
Sounds par for the course.

He was on radio shows today. This is what he wanted. No such thing as bad publicity.

Volin should be (but clearly hasn't been yet) fired.
He should be. He either intentionally presented it in such a way that it would get taken as a report for more visibility or he was just a dumbass and didn’t proofread it to make sure it didn’t come off that way. So, in other words, he’s either a fraud or he’s incompetent.

Ben Volin is lazy and it drives my nuts this slacker has kept his job for so long.

I'm actually OK with Volin developing a theory and voicing an opinion in public pertaining to Caserio's current mindset. Instincts and rumors typically what good journalists use to start a story. Their next step is to reach out to their network and ask confirming their theory. Once confirmed, they then ask their source if they can be on/off the record. If they say neither, then Volin floats out his theory as an op/ed (as opposed to a report). Reiss, Curren, Bedard and others are good at this. If the source wishes to remain off the record, then he says in his article, "team/league sources have confirmed that Caserio....bla bla"

He is such a lazy bastard. He can't bother to make some phone calls but instead he says, "I talk to people. I've been covering the team 6 years. Believe me. "

Christ he is clueless and we are stuck with his jackass covering the team.
