NY Mets/Jete Fans upset over Brady’s “Tom Terrific” trademark application lol

They've got a point. However, they're wrong in targeting Brady for their ire. The problem lies with the trademark laws, not the people using them.

It’s just weird. Brady is an excellent football player who has brought so much joy and winning to NE. But sometimes he does weird things (Tony Robbins, Photos with a goat, Carnaval dancing, trademarking Tom Terrific...).

When I think of "Tom Terrific", I think of Tom Seaver too. (who btw, pitched for the Sox ). That being said, the "ire" here shouldn't be directed at Tom. I very much doubt he cares about it much. This is the work of his "marketing people" whose job is to maximize his brand and thus his earnings. This was just a way to justify their pay checks. I'd bet that if the "furor" got hot, Tom would graciously (as ALWAYS) acquiesce.

Boomer should know better than to tar Tom with this brush.

His Pro Football Reference page has had Tom Terrific as one of his nicknames for at least 5 years

As does his wikipedia page.

To be "disgusted" and call someone you supposedly respect "sleazy" over something so dumb/just business seems totally unnecessary.

Who are the Mets?

In what way are trademark laws the problem?

If my name were Norman, I might go by a nickname, too.
The nickname I have for Esiason is one he doesn't want to hear. I try from time to time to watch his show in the morning, but he's such an obnoxious, insufferable, moralistic ***#### that I never make it more than a few minutes. The fact that he could make a useless slug like Craig Carton sound good by comparison says it all.

I fondly remember that show from my formative years. Apparently its creators/rights holders aren't invested in the title's legal ownership.

Tom Seaver debuted 52 years ago. He had plenty of time to get a TM. Either way, I don’t think this is an attempt to block Tom Seaver from using the moniker. It’s an attempt for Tom to brand Tom Terrific in the same way he branded TB12 as an official brand name. Do you really think he’s going after the annual $11.50 booming industry of Tom Seaver “Tom Terrific” merchandise (I think someone made a shirt once with some acrylic paint and sold it) and looking to sue Mets fans for using the phrase? Quite sure if Tom Seaver makes a “Tom Terrific” shirt with Seaver’s face on it, this isn’t an issue. It will become an issue if Brady runs with this and suddenly others use his logo and phrase to knockoff products.

Not to be too insensitive about a legitimately sensitive matter, but Tom Seaver reportedly is suffering from dementia and probably doesn't care (or remember much about being "terrific" himself).

Wait ... "The Pharaoh?"
Who knew?

'Pharaoh' is actually a Greek word that is based on an Egyptian word that meant 'great house'. When this word was first used, it referred to the palace of the king and its greatness, not just to the king himself.

I always liked Boomer going back to his Bengals days, and I agree he’s got a (very small) point, but I’m shaking my head over someone who was Craig Carton’s partner calling anyone else sleazy.
