2019 NE CAP SPACE

It’s a better deal than signing Trey Flowers long term. He’s a good player, but that contract he got was just horrendous. Bennet, who Flowers’ playing style has been compared to, is the better version of Trey Flowers - just older.

Some on this board drastically overrate Flowers and think the D line is doomed without him. The trade for Bennett was a brilliant move by BB and he will do the exact same things Flowers did.

And others on the board feel as long as the Pats have BB and Brady, they can overcome any loss. Flowers will be the next casualty on that list.

You all year: "Flowers won't get a top tier contract! He doesn't have big sack numbers!"

You now that he's gotten a top contract: "Horrendous contract and you all overrated him anyway."

I suppose you're consistent, but you're not a very accurate judge.

The Flowers assessment is hyperbolic for sure but it's true that Bennett is better value than Flowers on their respective contracts.

You are right that I said he wouldn’t get a top contract because of his low sack numbers which I admitted I was wrong long ago. It doesn’t mean it’s a good contract which I don’t think it is.

And I didn’t say “you all overrated him”, I said I see “some people have overrated him”.

So you’d rather sign Flowers to that deal he got in Detroit? The Pats obviously didn't agree with that either.

Kraft may need the cap space to pay his lawyers.

Miguel's 2019 salary cap on BSJ has us at $12,064,747 with Ubosi included. BTW, Ubosi's effect is very minimal, only his signing bonus.

We still need to acquire a DT. It does seem that it is time to announce an extension that frees up a bit of cap space.

Miguel shows $3,674,309 of cap space on his 2019 page at BSJ. This includes Collins and Watson, but not Inman (who would have little if any affect on the cap).

Overthgcap has us at $5,128,778 without the following
Watson
Collins
Inman
Harris
Winovich
===========
Miguel posted here that he will have a extensive analysis once things settle done a bit, including options for creating cap space, and for extending players.

"After projecting Inman's cap hit my new Patriots salary cap space number is now $3,674,309. This number accounts for all ten draft picks and all transactions except the Brandon King extension. Expect latter to increase King's 2019 cap number and slightly decreasing cap space no."

May and June are the months for extensions. More will come.

There are still 1-2 restructures that could happen but I think we will see extensions and will create extra room.

If they need cap space, I could see cutting McCourty. Save about 10m. Way too high priced for what he does.

Maybe McCourty needs to miss a few games so that people can appreciate his importance to the defense. There’s a reason why the Patriots have been one of - if not the - best in the league since 2011 when it comes to avoiding deep passes.

Restructuring may be a good option though.

He is in his final year. So extending him would be the way to go but then he probably retires after this year so not sure if we want the dead cap.

We probably just let him play on that 13M cap even though it's too much. Cutting won't happen because we can't replace his contributions regardless if we get 10M or not.

We’ll see if it ends up being his final year. He was clocked at like 22 mph last year on his pick 6, has settled in NE, and is still worth a lot on the market. He’s 31. I get that a lot of players consider retirement after the grind each season, after winning a SB, but on paper his retirement would be more surprising than Gronk. Doesn’t have the injury record and they came in during same draft.

Here are some numbers
Since 2011 the patriots are #2 in points allowed.
Since 2014 they are #1.

Yea but our defense sucks. Points allowed is a meaningless stat.
