Jared Veldheer to retire

Sometimes I wonder about the people that post here...what makes you say he “wasn’t good enough to be a Patriot”? The fact that the team decided to pay him a decent chunk of money? The fact that he started 113 of the 118 games he’s been in the league. Or the chance that he may have been a starting tackle if Wynn isn’t ready/isn’t a tackle?

Yeah, I made a joke in a previous post about him not wanting to work, but in reality all we know for sure is he's retiring. We don't know if it's the situation, his health, his motivation to keep putting his body through it, or something else. We don't need to get defensive about a player choosing not to play for us (or anyone).

They can only spend so much, there's a salary cap. The ticket prices go up because they can go up; the teams don't up ticket prices in order to make payroll.

Yes I know that there is a salary cap. It does inch up every year.

You asked
I don't know why people get so hung up on someone else's money.

Are you talking about your neighbors or the New England Patriots football team?

Payroll is the highest cost for any business. The money has to come from somewhere.

teams don't up ticket prices in order to make payroll.

Are you sure?

The vast majority of NFL team revenue comes from TV deals, which have increased proportionally more than the salary cap. Ticket sales account for a tiny fraction of total revenue. The Packers make public financial statements each year, you should look at them.

(Hint: Their operating profit is at least $70 million a year. They aren't raising ticket prices because of incremental increases in the salary cap or because they're worried about making payroll, they're raising ticket prices because they have a season ticket waiting list the size of a small country, so they can. Blaming players for ticket price increases would be... highly misplaced.)

Sorry to see him go, from a Pat's fan's perspective. Thought he would be a good presence on that line, even (hopefully) as a back-up.

Time came to put on his cleats and his body just said, "nope," I guess. Can't blame him for that.

Wish him all the best.

It's an old adage, but you have to consider the source. He's addled, at the least, a moron, at the best.

You don't begrudge a man taking $750k from a team he's never played for, after only practicing for, maybe, a couple of days?

You're trolling with that, right?
If he signed in good faith and only then realized he couldn't play? No, I don't begrudge the man. We all have had that time when we thought we were stronger or healthier than we were and made promises based on that assumption that we couldn't keep. The only difference here is the amount of money on the table.

No, the difference is that he would have taken 3/4 of a million dollars from a team he'd never played for. Fortunately, the rules are in place to remedy this.

And your take is beyond ridiculous.

Not only that, but as I understand it the salary cap (which in turn creates the salary rates/structure for the player's market) is determined by taking a CBA negotiated percentage of the different revenue streams for the league. So, in theory, teams would push player salaries DOWN if they started giving away tickets for free. And when they raise them, it automatically increases average player salaries in coming years. So, yeah, teams raise or lower prices based on the current market and what they believe fans will pay for them.

It's not a literal signing bonus: Sign the contract -> get money. It's payment upfront for future services rendered with obvious caveats for injury or the team deciding to cut/trade the player. No services rendered, no bonus.

Regards,
Chris

Miguel says he retired before receiving the signing bonus money.
So not a moral or cap issue .

I believe that BB brings these guys in because he knows they plan to call it quits.

Im waiting for a guy to hang it up at halftime someday.
