Jared Veldheer to retire

Under the CBA, the Pats will ask for the money paid to be returned. If he refuses they go to arbitration. I suspect he will return the money because I can guarantee a loss in arbitration. He has earned almost $40m over the course of his career and the NFL has pretty good retirement plan so it's not like he should need the cash.

The NFL has a terrible retirement plan and whether he will keep the money or not depends entirely on the way the contract was worded. If the money was guaranteed carte blanche then he'll keep it.

I don't know why people get so hung up on someone else's money.

Ticket prices?

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but we're talking about 3/4 of a million dollars. I think a lot of NFL players are relatively underpaid when compared with baseball and basketball guys and lack of guaranteed contracts come into play, too, along with short careers. But, that's a helluva lot of money from a team for whom you've done zippo. I think it's wrong.
That might be true, but Valdheer is NOT one of them. As its been posted here, he's made around $40MM dollars playing football. You point is NOT well taken.

BESIDES even if we were talking about the last guy at the end of the roster will make over $450,000 for one season. Do you know how many years it would take for a coalminer, cop, construction worker, teacher, etc, etc, to make that much money?

I wouldn't begrudge the guy at least SOME of that money if he had suited up and at least made an EFFORT to earn it for a month at TC Bottom line, he got paid for services he never provided. Plain and simple. There isn't an arbitrator in the land that would allow him to keep that money.

The only question here is whether that $750.000 will be credited to this year's cap or next year.

Next issue.

750k..we agreed to it good payday for doing nothing. This guy didn't have what it takes to be a patriot not good enough
Obviously, Coach and GM Belichick disagreed with your assessment. His retirement doesn't mean he didn't have what it takes to be a Patriot or that he wasn't good enough to be one.

If you are talking about players from my time or even those in the 80's. You would have my complete sympathy. But that is not even close to the truth today.

A player drafted in the top 4 rounds will sign a contract that will pay him enough money for him and his family to live a life time if he doesn't make a dime more after that 4 year contract is over. That assuming he makes no money from endorsement. That assuming that after the age of about 27 never works another day in his life!

This isn't like when I played and the dream was to make 14K playing football instead of 7K teaching school. To put it in perspective. Today the dream would be to make $450K playing football instead of 25K teaching school.

I don't see any of today's players banding together to fund the SMALLEST percentage of their lucrative contracts to fund player pension funds for those upon whose backs the league was built. Ever see a player today think of that. I don't think so. SO pardon me if I'm not sympathetic to Jared Valdheer and his 3 quarters of a million dollars he did NOTHING to earn.

I'm not sure you read all of my post. I purposely used the term "relatively underpaid" when compared with other professional athletes. I have personal and intimate knowledge of how much money is paid to some of the workers you cited. My post, seemingly like yours, was meant to express criticism of the player in question for the possibility that he might keep his signing bonus money. Your criticism might be better directed toward those whose opinions on this matter differ from ours.

BTW- has anyone have any definitive information about whether poor Jared ever showed up for any off season workouts or OTA's?????

Do you guys think arbitrators rule based on some arbitrary idea of fairness or something?

It appears that signing bonuses (or at least the part prorated in any league year for which you are retired) are included as part of forfeitable allocations (and retirement is a forfeitable breach), so he is required to pay it back. See Article 4, Section 9 of the CBA.

Does Teller come with him?

These are the Patriots remember. They play chess while their competitors play checkers or so it’s said. Wouldn’t you be a bit surprised and disappointed, especially after being burned by Wayne, if we find out the Patriots didn’t include language in the contract addressing the return of bonus money in the event the player abruptly retires?

I see the corporate activists are out in full force.

And now that you've commented the eat the rich socialists have waved their freak flag as well. The real concern here isn't with Krafty Bob's virtually bottomless wallet but rather with the Pats very finite cap number. But hey, you let that pinko freak flag fly and blast us evil benighted capitalist pigs who don't want to see our team's cap shaved by $750k

They did not get burned by Wayne. BB forgave it. He tried for a few weeks, then gave it up. He was a HOF and Bill enticed him to come and play for a rival. He did not quit the first day of OTA

According to Miguel: he didn't receive the bonus - was scheduled to tomorrow.

Now we can switch to saying what a class act he was to resign before taking the money.

I guess that's in the eye of the beholder.

Current players need 5 NFL seasons (basically being on an NFL roster) to vest although Veldheer was grandfathered in at 3 seasons. For his 9 NFL seasons from 2010 - 2018, he'll receive a monthly pension of $5,360. Same amount as Gronk will get, since their careers overlapped. $64,320 per year for life beginning at age 55. It's certainly not at the level of a current NFL salary, but it’s a decent amount especially when factoring in the retirement age of 55 instead of 65.
