Patriots re-sign Danny Shelton

Not really.
Last year at this time we had Cannon, Waddle, Wynn, and Trent Brown (though a complete unknown at LT).
This year we have Cannon, Wynn (recovering from an Achilles tendon tear), Cajuste (also recovering from injuries that prevented him from performing ALL workout drills except bench press), and a breaking-down (if not broken-down) Veldheer.
Big difference, or at least to me it is.

only if you factor 20/20 hindsight

how is that unlucky?

One doesn't exclude the other.

Exactly, if the patriots were serious about mccoy before, signing someone for hopefully a cheap deal that might not even make the final roster is not going to change that.

actually, you had Garcia penciled in as your best case LT a year ago.......in your perpetual negativity, you're moving your own goalposts now.....we were just as unsure about LT at this time last year.

The matter of fact is that in the 3 games Shelton was inactive last year

our opponents averaged 7.3, 6.3 and 9 yards per carry.

In the 13 games Shelton played, opponents averaged 4.5 yards per carry.

This signing was necessary.

Shelton cap hit is 1 million so nothing that would stop us from signing McCoy.

And Bill agreed with them by sitting him for some games...Shelton did perform better afterwards, including the POs, so it seemed that the message was received how Bill wanted it received.

Shelton is now in direct competition with David Parry for the backup space-eating DT role behind Pennel (with Butler, Cowart & Kamala competing for the backup disruptive DT role behind Guy). Good luck and good health to all of them; and may the better men win.

Shelton had a golden opportunity last season. The Pats did not pick up Malc Browns option leaving the door wide open for Shelton to nail down a role and new contract.

Maybe the fear of selling shoes at Foot Locker in the near future will get his axx in gear this time around, but I dont have him on the 53. Shelton is hungry, but others are hungry for football and not IHOP.

Not sure how much they paid him but if it’s minimal then I’m fine with it. A solid depth/rotational player who may or may not be active depending on the game plan.

My hope is the contract is not "safe" enough for him to show up unmotivated, but then again the contract year didn't make him play with his hair on fire last year either. He had some good snaps in a limited role in the playoffs. Hopefully he either builds off of that and maintains a niche role, or some unknown UDFA or other signing makes a surprise splash at which point we cut him loose again. Depth is good with big fellas.

Its a shame.

Here is a young man with the size and strength to be a beast in the NFL. Put Dan Kleckos heart in Danny Shelton and you would have a monster.

$75k signing bonus.

If he's cut tomorrow oh well.

Yeah, that's the kind of deal I figured. Depth with a guy who you know (both positively and negatively), but if he gets beat out there's no real commitment. No downside to this for me.

Shelton @ 1yr/1M is better than Pennel @ 2yrs/5M

There's so much wrong with this post, I don't know where to begin. The basic premise is that Shelton "isn't trying hard." You have no idea of that's the case or not. You have no idea of what injuries a player might be dealing with at any given time. You have no idea of the tiny little things that can get an athlete off-balance - new scheme, new role, little chemistry with the complimentary pieces.

In Shelton's case, it's as much the coaches figuring out what his best role will be. He's not Wilfork. He's not Washington. He's not the centerpiece. 1st Round (mid) pick - could he become the centerpiece? At this point, doesn't look like it, and his contract reflects that.

15-20 snaps per game, unless they see marked improvement in other areas. The RIGHT 15-20 snaps per game, like against the Chargers and Rams last year in the playoffs.

The signing fits perfectly with what Lombardi wrote in his newest "Biggest Need for every Team" column for The Athletic

New England: Defensive tackle
The Patriots have to figure out the tight end position (it might be Rudolph), but more than that, New England needs depth at the defensive tackle position. Finding a big man to play the run will help — and they might just bring back Danny Shelton to fill this role.

Interestingly he still mentions TE as an unsolved position.

After the Shelton signing it appears to be and especially with Rudolph on the market. If Rudolph is not coming to NE, I could easily see them standing pat

Can’t agree with this anymore. Just because a guy doesn’t live up to his draft status doesn’t make him lazy. Sometimes skills/schemes just don’t translate from college to the pros and no amount of “heart” would change it. I look at it kind of the way in a similar fashion to the Amendola contract. When he signed for a good chunk of money I was expecting Welker like numbers. Obviously we didn’t get those and for Amendola’s first year here I wasn’t a big fan. It wasn’t necessarily his fault as he produced pretty similarly to his Rams numbers. Just because he was getting paid more didn’t make him a different player. Same with Shelton; just because he was drafted high doesn’t make him a stud.
