Too expensive. He'll go to the Browns or Colts

I assume the NEP had some interest but when it came to doing a deal or the money McCoy wanted they shifted their focus the Shelton

I don’t want Shelton. Give me McCoy. ;)

He’s a back-up. Hence why he sat around for as long as he did before getting signed. As long as that’s his role, I’m fine with it. The team clearly feels the same way hence... why he sat around for as long as he did before getting signed.
He's a backup with some actual talent to be better. Granted he had a very up and down season in his first year. Several healthy scratches during the season, as well as a highlight play in the superbowl. But mostly, lackluster would be the operative term to describe his first season with the Pats.

2015 NFL Draft Profile: Danny Shelton

But here are 3 thoughts.

1. Shelton was NOT a reach when the Browns made him the 12th pick in the draft in 2015. He was strong. He was explosive. He had rare quickness in a 340lb human. AND he was also a Hue Jackson Brown for 3 years, which is NEVER a good thing as last year showed so evidently.

Now the "potential" that resides in Danny Shelton didn't show itself very often last year with us either, so optimism should be tempered. However it EXISTS, and the fact that he chose to resign HERE, knowing the rigorous program he's getting into, is a good sign.

2. There are a lot of guys who have been high picks and hit the lows that Shelton had being a healthy scratch might have packed it in and mentally checked out during the course of the season. Shelton DIDN'T. When his number got called, he showed up. Was it because he's mentally tough, or just great coaching, I don't know. But it is a hidden positive.

3. So in the end for NOW, the Pats have added a back up run defender and DL depth for the right price. But this is a "gift" that might end up being more than expected when it finally gets "unwrapped" this fall. It will be a big challenge to Bellima to see what he can get out someone who has mostly UNDERACHIEVED in his career.

He could be the next X-Pat to break the FA bank after exceeding expectations with NE......and I would LOVE it to happen.

IMO Shelton is a VERY talented player who's heart is not 100% into the game of football anymore...and probably hasn't been since college.

I know people here will take the opportunity to bash the player, but I just wanted to give my condolences to Reuben Foster, who tore his ACL just minutes into his first OTA.

Report: Reuben Foster has torn ACL

Whether you like him or hate him isn't relevant. Having something like this happen is a ****ty hand to be dealt. I wish him the best in his recovery.
On one hand I agree with your sentiment. On the other, the KARMA option is just too easy and writes itself. No need to even state it. ;)

Imagine having Mike Pennel and Gerald Mccoy
That's a fantasy I had during this process too. But here's the thing. I'm SURE that the Pats knew that McCoy was going to be released by the Bucs, and yet STILL decided to resign Shelton now. It's not like this signing couldn't have waited a week. He's been out there since March.

No, I'm afraid the Pats aren't mindful of our little fantasies. I don't think they were ever really a player in that market. Too much money, too old, and we have almost NO cap space. The Vet minimum is NOT going to get it done when McCoy hits the market. He's going to be a nice pick up for someone with a LOT more cap space than we do.

Curious what sort of money McCoy wants. He’s already a very rich man.

Give him a 2-3 year deal and backload it....

I’m willing to drive Danny Shelton back to the airport, just saying.
