Patriots re-sign Danny Shelton

Maybe I'm amazed. Maybe he is useful in some run packages with Pennel. That's a lot of beef to move.

Nice depth signing hopefully he picks up where he left off last.

Lol this entire forum called for Sheltons Head last year

Nice blend of talent to scheme for each game.

I assume so but either way, we need to extend some players soon to create more capspace.
why?

When is the next time that we'll need cap money. We still $3M don't we?

That being said, Brady will extend at some point, creating $4M or $5M in cap space, all we need unless there is a major trade.

So, that leaves us with only two major losses that don't have significant replacements: Gronk and Trent Brown. One could argue that Wynn replaces Brown (or some combination of veldheer/wynn), but there's questions there. Gronk is irreplaceable, so the fix there will have to be an offensive philosophy shift.

But Bennett takes Flowers role and Pennel takes Malcolm Brown's role. Shelton is back and I have to believe one of Thomas/Gordon/Harris/Harry is going to take Hogan's. Is there any other major player from last year's team that's gone that I'm missing?

The question about Wynn is no more substantial than the question for the position this time last year.

I meant Brady with that.

Because those other possible extension don't seem to free up additional money.

And I still hope we see a trade at WR, TE

They look like they’re going to do more 3-4 or at least the version Seattle used to deploy 6-7 years ago

Nobody else wanted him.

1st round pick who is lazy. Watch him show up to camp looking like he trained on pizza all off season.

Sea did a lot of 4-3 as well. Wagner, Wright and Smith played a lot

As far as I can remember they never ran much of a 3-4 this decade. Avril and Bennett are the 2 guys I think of as their defensive ends, and Avril certainly would not play that position on a 3 man front.

They ran Bryant, Mebane, Clemons and McDonald out there in a variety of sets but I do think they were more 4-3 than 3-4

Damn, that DL was so deep I forgot most of them.

Meh. As long as the deal is cheap. Hopefully someone takes that job from him, but if not it's nice to have someone there whose a proven nfl quality player.

He improved somewhat - probably has a good attitude and now knows what to expect as far as games and conditioning. I like it!

Danny Shelton is a quarterback’s name.

This signing stinks.:D

I'll assume they're paying Shelton a salary relative to his limited work and snap count.

Against teams with horrible O-Lines and rushing attacks he sits, against great O-Lines and rushing attacks he starts. So it was last season, so it will likely be again unless he makes huge strides as a pass rusher, which is also possible.

Glad they got this done, we needed one other guy besides Pennel who could play nose tackle. Anyone saying this is a bad signing discounts how the Chargers and Chiefs got mauled by the Patriot run game directly because they didn't have enough beef upfront.

There's not a huge premium placed on pure nose tackles anymore, he's a part time player who doesn't give you a lot on special teams. But much like a kicker they are completely unimportant until the moment you need them.
