Patriots 53 man roster post draft

He can be in the PS.

I am not sure that this is a gamble you want to make with a fourth round pick. All it takes is just one team to claim him. I am sure that the Pats were not the only team that had a draftable grade on him.

It is just way too risky imo.

They won’t risk releasing Stidham.

The Belichick patriots have NEVER released a rookie 4th rounder. They're not starting now.

Wow. Hard to believe that the legend of Garrett Mills is already 13 years old. He could zig, he could zag, he could return punts, he could tackle, he could QB, and he could even act as the emergency placekicker.

Exactly.

LaCosse is WR5, TE3 and will play substantially on STs.

Lacosse is relatively cheap too. Low cost & position flexibility is something that BB covets. The problem is, for instance, WR, TE, DB and even QB. We have known value players at potentially low cost(cap $ to production ratio) as well as draft pick potential bust to good to star players. Something has got to give somewhere.
On QBs, IMHO, I don't know how we can go with 2 QBs. Brady is god like but the reality is he's in his 40s. Our lone backup is going to be a rookie? Three QBs.
On TE, so we keep Lacosse but then doesn't it seem likely we also keep BW and ASJ? Three TEs.
On WRs and DBs it goes down the same mathematical road. So ultimately it comes back to something has to give somewhere. And while it could change by Aug 30, as it stands right now there will be some damn difficult cuts to be made. I'm not sure any of the three TEs should be signing a 1 year property lease near Foxboro, Lacosee included.

And deservedly cut for Brown as he washed out of the NFL once cut. But Mills -- except for SUP reminding me of the big "can do it all" headline on drafting Mills -- I had to look up to find he was put on IR. So technically he wasn't cut his rookie year. But given his career he was all but a bust and a wasted pick.

Let's all hope this year the decision is much more difficult to cut any of the draft picks (much less fourth rounders). That's the ideal even if it makes the cuts that much more tough to swallow.

Here is Phil Perry’s early 53 man roster projection:
Patriots 53-man roster projection: Space for Jamie Collins?

Spoilers: 4 TEs (including Devlin), 3 QBs, 5 interior OL (including Karras), 6 WRs, 5 RBs

5 LBs (Collins and King over Roberts), 6 CBs (Dawson over Crossen), 5 safeties (including Ebner), and the new punter over Ryan Allen.

The Belichick patriots have NEVER released a rookie 4th rounder. They're not starting now.

I get your overall position and I also agree with your conclusion but to me personally arguments like "because we have always done it like that" or "because we never did that before" are not particularly convincing.

Also I'd argue this has little to do with the round the player was picked in but with the traits he posses that made the team pick him. The round just correlates with that but in itself has no predictive value.

QB - 3
WR - 5
RB/FB - 6
TE - 3
OL - 8
Offense: 25

DL - 9
LB - 5
DB - 8
Defense 22

ST - 3 (Slater, King, Ebner)
K/P - 3

8 DBs isn't realistic.
I consider, for attendance-taking purposes, both Slater & Ebner as Safeties and the King of STs Penalties as a LB. So 10 "DB"s now looks more realistic, though I'm ass-uming that the eventual count will be 12 (the 6 CBs, Chung/DMac/Harmon, Slater/Ebner/Brooks).

Roberts getting cut is crazy talk.
I agree with you that Roberts showed a lot of improvement and offers a run stuffing option on first and second down, but I’m wondering if he’s more on the bubble in terms of them wanting someone more athletic to cover on 3rd downs, especially with Bentley returning?

It’s going to be interesting to see how it shakes out. Personally, I’m rooting for Roberts.

He deserves to be in a starting rotation somewhere. It might not be here though. Hightower, Van Noy, Bentley, and Collins all have the ability to be plus starters in a system where we usually only play 2 LB at any given time; I don't see much point in keeping more than 4. Wonder if we see a trade later this summer if the LBs stay healthy.

Collins isn’t exactly a lock, either, though, so it’s going to be an interesting battle. We’ll have to see how he looks in coverage, these days.

He was better in coverage as well.

right, I'm not discussing those put on IR

But, yes Brown was cut, but he DID make the 53 man team.

My point is that ever player who is drafted in the first four rounds starts the season on the 53, unless he is on one of the lists (PUP, IR, NFI, etc).

Yeah, we might be living in a world where Roberts is a better player than Collins. We'll have to wait and see.

Updated picker (WWID version):

QB (2) T.Brady, J.Stidham
- Hoyer "retires" to become QB coach;

RB (5) J.Develin, J.White, R.Burkhead, S.Michel, D.Harris
- No room for Bolden here, and Devlin & Burkhead both play STs too;

WR (4) J.Edelman, N.Harry, P.Dorsett, D.Inman
- Nobody else really stands above the rest;

TE (4) B.Watson, A.Seferian-Jenkins, S.Anderson, R.Izzo
- While Bill sees what he has in Watson & ASJ, Mister Anderson can help in the passing game and Ryan no relation to Larry Izzo can help in the running game. LaCost doesn't help anywhere, and Beck goes to the PS;

C (2) D.Andrews, B.Schwenke
G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, H.Froholdt
T (4) M.Cannon, I.Wynn, TBD, Y.Cajuste (C.Croston if Cajuste is PUPed)
- If I were Bill, I would not abide with Cajuste/Croston as our only backup OT, so I added TBD until further notice;

DE (5) M.Bennett, D.Wise, J.Simon, C.Winovich, D.Rivers
DT (4) L.Guy, M.Pennel, D.Shelton, A.Butler
- Rivers gets one more chance, and Simon also assumes the duties of Punt Protector;

ILB(2) D.Hightower, J.Bentley
OLB(3) K.VanNoy, J.Collins, C.Sam
- Sam has the TC of his life and makes both Roberts & King superfluous;

CB (6) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Jones, J.Williams, D.Dawson, J.Jackson

SS (2) P.Chung, O.Melifonwu
FS (3) D.McCourty, D.Harmon, T.Brooks
- ObiWan also has the TC of his life and makes Ebner superfluous;

ST (4) S.Gostkowski, J.Bailey, J.Cardona, M.Slater

Total players: 53

1) I hope this is the case but Hoyer probably makes it
2) No need for 4 TEs. Hell, might not need 3 TEs.
3) Bolden makes the roster as core special teamer
4) agreed about WR
5) Maybe a late addition after cuts at tackle but right now I only see Jags so might as well go with Cajuste if he shows he has at least Waddle level which shouldn't be difficult during TC
6) I also assume Rivers gets a 3rd year but numbers might be too tight to allow it. But maybe they save a spot somewhere to make it work
7) wouldn't be bad news but right now unrealistic to leave out Roberts. King just signed an extension, he'll make it.
8) I hope that is true regarding Ebner. He doesn't impress me and never had and he makes too much money. Cap saving would be 2 million.
9) agreed about Bailey
