Patriots getting the band back together, sign Jamie Collins

Elite LB is a low bar with the Patriots? What?

Let's see, starting with HOF Andre Tippett, a few outstanding LBs that come to mind are Steve Nelson, Nick Buoniconti, Hightower, Tedy Bruschi, Willie McGinest, Ted Johnson, Mike Vrabel, Jerod Mayo, Vincent Brown, Rob Ninkovich, Roman Phifer, and maybe Junior Seau in the twilight of his career. For you old-timers, I'd throw Bob Golic and Steve Zabel on this list, although the game was so different back then.

Not making the list are some great players - Chris Slade, Rosey Colvin, Johnny Rembert, Todd Collins and Bryan Cox.

Looking back on the first three Super Bowls, linebacker was a core strength of those defenses. Guys like Phifer are underrated due to the talent around him, but he was solid. Those were other-worldly defenses looking back on them now.

Collins is good but he doesn't crack that list. Yet. With another season like 2018, Kyle Van Noy sneaks in there somewhere. He was such a key guy last year.

Thank you for the history lesson. "Elite LB for the Patriots" AT THE TIME is what I said, during Mayo's career, when they couldn't stop a nosebleed.

The article titled Cannon.

Mason is 2nd in guaranteed $
Yeah, I thought it was mistake because Cannon wasn't the highest paid tackle in the league when he signed anymore than Mason was the highest paid guard, I posted the link to spotrac above which outlines current salaries, Mason isn't #2.

The last time we've come close to the highest paid positional player was Gronk and he's retired, Devin McCourty was the #2 FS when he signed and that lasted minutes.

And more importantly than these few hyper reliable guy we've signed, were all the guys we actually let walk because their eventual contracts were in the outer atmosphere.

Every year a Patriot becomes the highest paid positional player in the NFL for some other team.

The Pats are a talent and coaching factory that other teams ravage annually.

And to nobody in particular...

Jerod Mayo for the first 5 years of his career was arguably the best will linebacker in the NFL and his career was only cut short due to injury.

He helped carry some of the most talent deficient defenses of BB's tenure in that time.

What a f***ing steal! Collins must be counting on the big stage to get his career back on track.

Wow.

And the Patriots are the premier stop to get the career/contract potential on track. Collins comes in and plays his best? He's looking at a very nice contract starting in 2020.

This is a steal. Everyone knows Collins, quantifiably so, has the ability. Much of his issue, I suspect, has been focus. If this amount of time/seasoning in the league and now in the BB program, if that can't improve your focus then chances are less than good it will ever be improved. But if Collins can sharpen focus? Another marked cap dollar to production ratio win for the Patriots. OTOH pretty manageable cap dollar risk if he flames out.

I tell you what, if Bennett can have a good year and we don't get hammered by injuries? It's hard not to see this D as far more than able to fulfill their side of complimentary football.

The question is was AD a bad singing. Cut and the team took a charge of $8.8m
They cut him in the spring prior to year 4 in a 5 year deal. You’re saying the team still lost money? Why? There weren’t any restructures. You’re saying that there was a dead cap hit of 8.8m? That would seem odd.

Even someone with a top market pact like Gilmore allows the team to save money after 3 years, and that’s after restructuring AND taking into account the fact that his 5 yr deal was worth about twice as much as Thomas.’ I swear that I remember them saving 3-4m, but I can’t find any details on it.

I apologize if this is a repeat. Collins will cost $3M in cap room on a 1-year deal, same as Watson, with another $3M in incentives.

Details released on Jamie Collins’s new contract with the Patriots

As an aside, I would note that Collins played in over 90% of the defensive reps in 2018. We'll see if we keep all the LB's: Van Noy, Hightower, Collins, Bentley and Roberts. That's a pretty strong group. It seems likely that Roberts would be traded in August.

This is much different from the erroneous 1m dollar deal that someone posted yesterday, and makes a lot more sense.

Basically, it will realistically be somewhere between 3-5m. Still a hell of a pay cut, but not quite the vet minimum range that some believed.

Well, look at it this way- he never cut an album, so you have to think he was bad at singing.
He was good at singing to the media about his change in LB responsibilities.

You think someone would want to take on his 2m APY ? If you assume that he might be gone to make space for 1 year of Jamie Collins I think it is more likely Roberts ends up cut than traded.

The thing to keep in mind with Collins and cutting younger players for him is that there is a pretty good chance he will be here for a year (if not less). Roberts could be a depth level player for another 2-3 on a economically reasonable deal.

It was a galatically ****ty contract. BB must have been drunk

He should have been on "The Voice"! :p

Agree. Roberts isn't going anywhere. He's good, cheap and young

Cannon... do you mean Shaq Mason?

I didn't say they don't pay, I said they don't overpay, and so did you initially.

Mason's contract makes him the 5th highest paid guard in the NFL in guaranteed money and 9th highest in total value of the contract with salary and incentives. Paid very well, near the top even, but not the highest.

NFL Active Player Contracts

Are you counting active contracts now or when he signed. He was in the top 5 when he signed.

There will be 400 ST snaps for him next season?

Let’s hope not!
Roberts had a good year in 2018 and will continue to improve. Not sure why fans still think hes the player he was in 2106

Yeah that's my point, with rare exceptions they don't make players the top paid, it's always within striking distance of top paid; 80-90% of what the highest paid makes, and those players are few and far between.

According to Bleacher Report at the time: "Per Spotrac, Mason's average annual salary of $10 million is tied with David DeCastro of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kyle Long of the Chicago Bears for seventh-most among all guards."

Report: Shaq Mason, Patriots Agree to 5-Year Contract Extension Worth Up to $50M

It's another example of "snapshot-itis". People get a picture in their minds of a player and can't let it go. We see it time and time again.

In fans eyes, Tavon Wilson will ALWAYS be the guy who got beat on a play action pass early in his rookie year when he was filling in because of an injury. It turned out to be the game winning score in the "you mad, bro" game. He was considered a bust from that moment on. On the other hand Troy Palamaluu could be counted on to be beat multiple times on play action passes EVERY time he played the Pats, and he'll going to end up in the hall of fame. BTW- Wilson has carved out a nice career in Detroit since leaving here.

Snapshot-itis

Same for when Patrick Chung left. When he was brought back a lot of fans went nuts trying to figure out why. Most thought he was camp fodder. Snapshot-itis. It literally took YEARS for Chung to turn that image around. He STILL doesn't get the credit he deserves.

SOME players get better over time. ALL of them make mistakes. Football is a game of mistakes. Deal with it!

Eyes will be on Jamie and every fan will scrutinize which gap he was responsible for and what he did - including myself as I do think he tried to be Batman one too many times.
