2018-19 Stanley Cup - Bruins vs Blues

Didn’t see the game but watched the recap

At least Half the goals that went in this game 3 wouldn’t get by rask...

The problem is that, unlike football and baseball, hockey is a constant motion sport. Why do I call that a problem? Well, because that leads to things like the offsides review problems, where a review about something that happened a while back can be imposed on the game. Well, if you, as a league, are going to argue that getting it right is so important that you'll undo something that happened 30 seconds prior because the replay shows a millimeter of separation between the puck and line once you go super slow mo with the film, you can't logically say "But we're going to not review things like hand passes and penalties. If you can basically erase chunks of the game for the good of the sport (or whatever nonsensical reason used to justify such stupidity), you've got no excuse for preventing replay from looking at anything that's blatantly obvious, and adjusting the game as needed.
Yeah I'm not a big fan of the offsides review. But I think we can agree last night should be fixed I'm not going to pretend to have all the answers but I think everything should be up for review but set a limit on number of passes/time and only allow a certain # of challenges. If you get your challenge right you don't lose it.
This way at least everything that directly leads to a goal is reviewable.

And all sports should just empower their refs to fix the blatantly obvious despite the rules. If I can look at a jumbo and know I'm wrong within seconds in a critical moment then let's not ignore it.

Nope hand pass is blown dead. Period.

So is a puck that hits the protective netting, provided an official sees it and actually blows his damn whistle.

Sharks getting all the calls. This is the 3rd one that directly led to a win. Bruins are doomed if the make it.

Where are all the anti-replay-in-sports people now? Even Stevie Wonder saw that hand pass.

It blows my mind that the NHL - where you can back the clock up several minutes to check for an offsides - doesn’t have a rule that any goal can be reviewed for any reason.

The review rules have turned these playoffs into a joke.
Aren’t you one of those that thinks there should be fewer reviews in sports?

Not sure I agree there because it simply overlooks the playoffs stats to date. Here are some key metrics of the last four standing (forgive the formatting, I'm not table savvy on this place).

Even with all of SJ's good fortune (they've had a break go their way every series), and the Bs have had a goal either called back or a bogus call go against them (goal off the protective mesh vs CBJ) every series, they are still leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else in Goal Differential and Goals against and a full goal ahead of SJ on goals against. If Rask keeps his play at the level its been at the last month plus, not sure even the refs could eff it up that much.

I've shared this opinion before here, but all sports should steal Rugby's form of review.

Television Match Official (TMO) watches all camera angles upstairs and can buzz down to the on field ref for a missed foul, try reviews et al.
TMO and on field ref communication is live and done over the stadium PA system so there is no "in cohoots".
Reviews are done expeditiously and now the the kinks have been worked out, the delays it once caused are largely a thing of the past.

The reason it largely wouldn't work for MLB/NFL/NHL is these sports are less about sport and more about entertainment, where getting it "right" is generally lip service. Transparency creates accountability. Controversy makes money, it brings passions to a boil, it creates story lines and click bait....all of which would be diminished if everything was correct and there was no reality based argument against it. Leaving room for fan bias means more $.

EDIT TO ADD - Cricket has a good system too, but that would be MLB centric.

Nonsense

When you would win 'but for' something, you deserve to win (assuming the 'but for' is something that doesn't belong, of course). That you had other chances to win is not the same as you not deserving to win. The same is true for the Saints against the Rams. The Saints deserved to win that game. The fact that they could have won it after the horribly blown call cost them the win at an earlier time doesn't change that.
The Saints situation isn't even comparable. But they didn't proceed to allow 4 TDs to the Rams afterwards.

The B's have overcome some horrific officiating and won anyway.
TBH I'm far more annoyed by what Carolina has gotten away with in the current series than I am about the goal that shouldn't have been allowed in the last one. It goes well beyond the normal 'it's the playoffs, let the boys play' approach, which I am normally in favor of provided it doesn't get out of hand. I understand what the Canes are doing is akin to the legion of bust Shehawks approach of 'they aren't gonna call everything' so WTH the risk is acceptable. That said, the rule of thumb on 'let 'em play' traditionally was always if a rules violation directly leads to a change of possession or goal the penalty needs to be called. The Canes are outclassed. As a result the interference, crosschecking, tripping and holding they are doing without getting whistled for it continues to escalate. We've all seen more than enough hockey to know that down that path lies not just retaliation but injury. That may not matter all that much for a Canes team whose demise is imminent but it matters a great deal for a B's team that has a legit chance to bring home the Cup.

Aren’t you one of those that thinks there should be fewer reviews in sports?
1: "I don't like reviews in sports"
2: "If they review, they should get it right."

These statements are not contradictory.

What were officials reviewing last night anyways? If no one called a hand pass, there was nothing to review. Or did they just want to check to see how bad they effed up?

I don’t know that there was an actual review. It seemed like just a gathering of the 4 refs/linesmen. I don’t remember anyone putting on the headset and watching it on a tablet, if that’s what’s being suggested, although maybe I simply missed it.

They didn't review anything, but they're not allowed a review in that situation. That's the problem.

the bruins haven't lost a game in the playoffs because of a call like the one tonight.
No they haven't, and that's a testament to them because they've had goals taken from them throughout the POs.

I haven't found verification yet, but I just heard a radio report saying the officiating crew that blew the St. Louis game has been pulled from rotation for the rest of the playoffs.

Saw something similar on HF Bruins board

Hmmm. Well, they knew they missed the call on the hand-pass, but there was nothing they could do about it (same on the goal against the Bruins after the puck went into the netting). Seems like the NHL should pull itself from the rotation for the rest of the playoffs...

Yeah. The overarching issue is that constant motion leagues need to make pretty much everything reviewable, even if you limit the occasions to goal/non-goal/play stoppage situations. But 4 officials missing a hand pass, when the puck is right there in play, is inexcusable.
