Patriots getting the band back together, sign Jamie Collins

Exactly.

For whatever the reason, in certain situations they no longer felt he could perform in his role.
But they want him back... and it wasn't about the money... I'm trying to understand.

Malcolm Butler did the same thing, maybe its better not to hold onto a player into his contract year. Pretend for a moment the Pats paid Collins before the year began, is he still freelancing? The Pats were never going to pay Collins that kind of money, because they almost never do.

Except in the cases where they do.

Ultimately this is still not about money but lack of team first mentality. Other players were able to set their FA status aside and delivered great performances and stuck to the script for the good of the overall team.

He didn't because money was more important to him.

And if he even attempts something similar this time he is gone even faster. This is a depth level signing and he will have to fight to even find a roster spot behind HT, KVN and Bentley.

No it was not. It was because he literally became a problem allowing huge defensive plays to happen doing whatever the hell he wanted to make big plays.

If he kept playing according to scheme he would have been gone at the end of the season or gotten a new contract. Unfortunately for him the Pats got KVN and Roberts was coming on as a run defender so Collins became not only replaceable but even detrimental to the team.

I think thats why Collins coming back is so interesting. Its not like he left here as a FA and on great terms. He was essentially demoted and subsequently fired.

I do think @Wozzy has a point. Collins was a 3 down player here for a couple of years. He was a 2nd team All-Pro for Pete's Sake. All of the sudden that changed.

I still believe the team made him a reasonable offer. He rejected it. He felt disrespected by the team. He started to play like Superman and stopped doing his job. BB got what he could for the player and shipped him out.

It's clear to me BB felt that was attributing factor to his reduction in snaps. His head wasn't on right. I wish Jamie was more professional about it and just played his game but he just couldn't. Clearly BB & Jamie had a talk, cleared the air (assumingly) and here we are.

See my other post. I mention you. It was about the money just in a different way than how you see it.

If they sign him he will play, he won't be fighting for a roster spot. If they sign him to a 1 year "show me" deal, he'll be playing for a new contract and will put in maximum effort.

I don't judge players who put their lives, limbs and health on the line, NFL contracts are a joke and players are usually entitled to every cent, unlike baseball or other low impact fully guaranteed contract sports.

Jamie Collins was second on the entire Brown's team in defensive snaps, led the team in tackles (104 combined), tackles for a loss (13, more than Myles Garrett), had an interception on multiple passes defensed and was tied for 1st in linebacker sacks.

When he left here it was over money, sure he was disgruntled, freelancing... over money.

For those saying he wasn't very good here or in Cleveland you're completely wrong. Prior to his contract year he was our best defender. BB compared him to Lawrence Taylor which is something he has never done.

He was not very good in Cleveland.

He was very good in New England.

Especially in 2014 and 2015.

Weren't we in line to get a pretty decent comp pick for him? Seems like Bill just didn't want him out there (for reasons you listed). Pretty clear Bill didn't just ship him out because he thought he'd lose him.

I know this was beaten to death 3 years ago but I think Bill....
  1. Figured if Jamie wasn't going to do his job to move him ASAP
  2. Send him to CLE where he'd get a decent 3rd rounder and direct him to a non-threatening team

His first months in Cleveland they hadn't won a game until he arrived, in 8 games he posted 69 tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, 5 QB hits, 2 sacks and a forced fumble... so without a full week of practice he was instantly their best linebacker and they won their only game.

The next season he was injured...

Last year he led them in just about every stat from the linebacker position... so despite what the Browns GM needed to say in order to justify trading him he was actually pretty good and was cut because he was too expensive.

The Browns have great depth at LB, they could afford to make that move.

I think the poster's point that you are replying to, though, is THAT was the reason last time that he freelanced.

.

I get his point. I think he's reading this situation incorrectly. Collins had 3 good years, including a second team All Pro selection the year before so had leverage to ask for more money.

He has no such leverage. To get that leverage he would need to play well. The Pats could benefit from that motivation this year.

As far as the freelancing accusation, I'm certain BB would not have signed him if he thinks it would be an issue.

2016 Collins' per game snap counts.

We can call it anyway we want but for whatever the reason, they clearly reduced his workload.

I was wondering how in the hell we got shutout by Buffalo (16-0). I guess it's too early in the a.m. that I forgot it was a Brady-less team and Brissett was the QB and Rex was the HC. He must still brag that he shut-out the Patriots in a year they won the Super Bowl. Something to tell his grand kids about.

Gotta wonder if Jamie would have preferred a different outcome than what the last 3 years were.

One one side, Jamie made ~$27m with the Brownstains.

Or...

If he kept his head, played like the Week 3 vs HOU Jamie Collins he would have had another ring, stayed here for less $ (Hightower $? )and had won another ring.

I'll never blame a player for going for the money. I wish Jamie went about it differently but whatever.

I feel like Collins's issues in New England were overblown after the trade. He was clearly a valuable player a lot of the time.

The fact that his play wasn't great playing for the Browns under Hue Jackson, noted worst coach of the modern era, isn't a real stunner and doesn't tell us much about how he will play in New England either way.

Brissett was playing with a torn ligament in his thumb in that game as well. He couldn't grasp or throw the ball anything like normal for him.

Brisket was hurt too. Someone else who was important was out as well. I forget.

Maybe.

There certainly wasn't a lot of chatter about freelancing until the BUF game. I do recall there was some chatter about Jamie "only" playing 80% of the snaps and not his normal 100% leading up to the BUF debacle.

Hue used him wrong and BB used him right. Nothing else to see there.

Who are you referring to specifically and I'll tell you if I'd rather have a player who knew his role and responsibilities as opposed to a free lancer who wanted to be Superman

Roberts, Freeny, mclellin, flowers, lee, harris, harrison, reilly.......I don't really care what you'll tell me becuase it doesn't really matter if you free lance or not if your physical abilities prevent you from making a play

So you think Bill should not have traded Jamie even though he was blowing off his assignments and leaving his teammates out to dry?

not at all....I am saying the position has been a **** show ever since his departure.......he wasn't going to pay collins anyway, and yeah, collins was playing for his impending paycheck the way he wanted to, but the simple fact is that he's back speaks volumes.....
