He was a decent linebacker. He was NOT worth a top 10 pick. He's been made into this mythical Mike Singletary by some in the fanbase.
Mayo was an elite MLB and yes he was worth a top 10 pick and he performed an an All-Pro level. If it wasn't for him and VW they would have allowed 30ppg.

Was he at a Singletary,Urlacher or Kuechly level? Of course not.

"Elite" is ridiculous. "Elite on the Patriots" sure, but that was a pretty low bar.

Collins is an athletic freak. Period.

Are we forgetting he could do things like this with that athleticism? In fact the NFL had to BAN this play because guys like Collins were too good at it, also for safety reasons.

Too often we forget that players CAN get better even later in their careers....IF they really want to. Just ask Tom Brady. So citing mistakes a player made in 2015 to make a point is just stupid. Even citing them last season doesn't mean they'll commonly occur this season........

Absolutely.

And Belichick has the template when comparing Patrick Chung I vs. Patrick Chung II.

Although, even at the time, BB said the failure of PI was really that the coaching staff didn't put him in the right places to succeed. Seems that Collins' I's demise was caused by Collins himself putting him in the wrong places on the field. All in all, I really am struck how BB doesn't hold stuck to one point of view - - he is far more evolutionary than many other "more flexible seeming" head coaches.

.

I sense another 3rd rounder in 2021. Thank you in advance Collins

You are right. Collins wore #91. But it's in large part to freaks like Collins that the NFL banned that move.

Here's one of Collins for the sake of accuracy. :)

Point is not the actual act of jumping over to block the FG since it is banned, it is a moot point.

The point is Jamie Collins had freakish athleticism in New England. Now if he can return at 90% of the athlete he was BUT play disciplined and 'do his job' he could easily turn into the next Patrick Chung success story on returning to New England.

104 tackles last year is nothing to sniff at, freelancing or not. If he has matured, our defense could be scary.

I just read some posters deriding Mayo as a lousy pick at 10 in the 2008 draft. Bill completely snookered the hopeless Jete into jumping up to get Vernot Goatston at 6...the NY Post and daily News ran HEADLINES about this tremendous coup the Jete pulled over on BB. YOU do the math...Lonely Walks By The Pond Goatston or Mayo? YOU are taking Goatston? Please stick to what you do now and stay away from pro football scouting.
