2018-19 Stanley Cup - Bruins vs Blues

Carolina has to win 4 out 5 to win the series, doesnt seem likely the way the B's are playing, I'm still sticking to they win it in 5.

I like your optimism. And this game by mid first period had, to me. the feel of a Hurricanes team that was outmatched. I haven't looked at the stats but I'd guess the Bruins were in front on virtually every one that is meaningful. However, game 1 was not so 'outmatched' and the Bruins took plenty of time before they were going. So while I like where we are I'm not yet sold on 'the way the Bruins are playing' (though I'm 100% for a game 2 repeat of game 3 :)).

Loooongggg way to go. They are peaking at the right time but they still have to win 6 more games.
They are playing so well.

Just gotta keep the foot on the gas.

Yeah, that's what's most impressive about this. Each series, they seem to be getting a bit more consistent and intense.

Dominant game for the Bruins, in everything but the hitting. Great job all around.

B's outhit the Canes despite owning the puck for the majority of the game. They dominated in all facets of the game.

Canes always go for the big hit, many of which toe the line of dirty (looking at you Ferland and Doughie) but make no mistake the Bruins are hitting them back pretty hard (especially the 4th line). I'll need to look at the TOI but the 4th line looks like they have the 2nd most ice time out there. They fly around hitting everything in sight, i love it.

I originally said B's in 5 but if this play continues B's are sweeping

They didn't dominate in hitting. Hitting isn't just about pure numbers. It's also about the hits themselves. Just as they didn't dominate in shots by number, but they clearly dominated in shots because of the quality.

But you be you.

^ THIS!!!
You've hit on a salient point that is all too often lost on casual hockey fans. When a team largely controls the puck and tempo of a game as well as far and away winning the possession battle of course they aren't throwing as many checks as they would in a more balanced TOP game. The Bruins made the hits they needed to and avoided being stupid and running guys that they may have felt had it coming once the game was in hand. They aren't just the deeper team in this series, they are also the smarter one

Frankly, who cares about hitting? It's sort of like yards in football. You can have as many hits (yards) as you want, but if you don't score, they are pretty meaningless statistics. I get that hits can intimidate the other team, but our last two opponents have been "big hitters," and the Bruins have either matched their hits or skated around them, resulting in 6 wins in a row.

Hitting matters about:
  • Big hits that change the flow of the game
  • Imposition of will during a game
  • Longer term fatigue in a series

But it's usually a general thing, as opposed to a specific arbiter.

At the moment the person that seems to care most about hitting is the person pontificating about it.
You're Yards Allowed analogy is a pretty good one. In today's game hitting matters most when you don't it. Which can be good and bad. To flesh out what was previously mentioned, a team looking for hits to make often isn't playing the smartest game. While it can work against a largely finesse team, the idea of hits 'imposing will' between two physical teams is just silly.

Bruins beats Carolina's depth and goaltending is no comtest anymore...Mrazek's confidence must be about shattered by now.......Rask is almost unbeatable and is totally dialed in so far...
