Andy Benoit's SB Recap with McVay

I enjoy reading Benoit's writing and feel like I learn a little when do. Is it just me or did Wade Phillips sound a little salty about Bill's compliments?

Making Edelman’s production all the more frustrating was that it stemmed mainly from execution, not scheme. “[I was surprised] that they didn’t change anything,” Robey-Coleman says. “We were on everything, there were no trick ‘em plays. They were just trying to run their best plays, we were running OUR best plays. That was my first Super Bowl, I would have thought the two weeks [of prep time] would change their gameplan, but there were no new wrinkles.”

The Patriots didn't have the options at WR to add new wrinkles. It was Edelman or bust, basically.

New England’s ground game is built largely around man-to-man blocking, often with fullback James Develin leading the tailback or a guard pulling to the play side. “Everyone was running ‘12’ (1 RB, 2 TE) or ‘11’ (1 TE, 1 RB) the whole year,” defensive end Michael Brockers says, “and the Patriots switched and started running ‘21’ (2 RB, 1 TE). People weren’t prepared. You’re used to seeing speed on the field, and now you have to deal with a fullback.”

Adjust to speed (and the lack of size that comes with it) on defense by putting size on the field and ramming it down their throats. Love it.

That was VERY interesting as well as a good read. Kind of lets you see that the guys on the other sideline are pretty smart too. Great to listen to how other teams see the Pats.

You know, I would LOVE to see the Pats on Hard Knocks, even though I know it will never happen. Taking an inside look like that would give us a better insight on why what the Pats do is so successful. It would allow Dante some well deserved screen time. Watching how a Pats team is built from the first day of camp would be Emmy worthy. It would be must see TV for the entire country. I've always wondered why Park St. hasn't forced this burden on the team.

BTW- I say this knowing that if it every actually happened I would be among the first to post how it is just ANOTHER example of Goodell trying to stick it to the Pats. ;)

Wade Phillips is one of the better DCs in the league. But it was satisfying to see Josh own him in the 4th quarter. Wade had no answer when we threw in that formation wrinkle to make it 10-3.

Park St. : Bill, we need you folks to do Hard Knocks.
BB: Nope.
Park St: Bill, Roger Goodell is on the line.
Goodell: Bill, we need you to do this.
BB: Nope.
Goodell: You understand there will be ramifications if you don't.
BB: Don't care. Eff off.
Goodell: Suit yourself.

And in Sports news, The NFL announced today that the Patriots have been fined for video taping from an unapproved location.

Goodell: Bill, we think you should reconsider the hard knocks thing.
BB: Nope.
Goodell: Ok Bill, have it your way.

Leading the news today, The NFL has suspended Tom Brady for air pressure.

Wow, is his GF hot or what!

Agree. It also seems that conditioning (or lack of) seems to come into play when things open up in the fourth quarter. The sprint hill and all.

From what I could find on NFL.com:

NFL owners passed a resolution in 2013 stating that teams can avoid mandatory inclusion on Hard Knocks if they fall under any of three exemptions:

1) They have a first-year head coach in place
2) They have a playoff berth in the past two seasons
3) They have appeared on Hard Knocks in the past 10 years

No, the one on the left!
Shes a freaking goddess. My god.

Russian model I believe. She met him when he was OC with the Skins. She was a student and George Mason. The web site said she was 29.

Oh man, I live right next to George Mason and the students I see walking through the neighborhood do not look like that!

You can't blame Wade for THAT! Kind of hard to make an adjustment to a formation you have never seen all year, in the 4th quarter of the game. Christ, the whole drive lasted only 6 or 7 plays, and it wasn't exactly like Gronk was all alone on his final catch. He was pretty well covered and Brady had to drop it in among 3 Rams players and Gronk had to make a great catch.

First you have to recognize that something new is happening. That might take a play or 2. THEN you have to figure out exactly what the change is. THEN you have to figure out just what would be a good adjustment. THEN you have to figure out a way to communicate the adjustment to the team and THEN you hope it works I guess you expected all this could and should be done within 7 plays???

I'm guessing you are a casual fan, right?

It's a nice article to get all the tidbits from coaches and players but I try to tune out any narrative Benoit gives or read it with skepticism against what I remember about the game.

For example:

Only this time, before the snap they motioned Edelman across, creating another layer of complexity for the scrambling defense. The result was a busted man coverage that left Gronkowski open down the seams. Littleton alertly recognized it but was a beat late playing the ball.

Littleton didn't alertly recognize anything. Joyner who dropped into the box to cover Edelman told Littleton to go back and cover Gronk. Whose mistake it was I don't know. But Benoit's narrative is certainly incorrect.

You know Wade gets a LOT of credit for this game, and I guess he probably should. But the fact remains the this game was a missed PAT from being a tie game with the Pats scoring 20 points....on the road.

I always get the perception that the Pats were somehow CRUSHED in the game....on the road. They weren't. That had a LOT of bad and questionable things happen to them that game. ONE of them was Phillips game plan. Another was was the injuries and inexperience on the OL (and no Dante, I think) Another was the great play of Miller.

So in the end the Pats lost a VERY close game....on the road. Hardly a surprise in the playoffs.

It's "Park Avenue," but an "A" for effort.
Thanks.
