2018-19 Stanley Cup - Bruins vs Blues

You may disagree, but it's actually pretty sensible.

Although, I guess I can envision some scenarios that would cause me to disown a team.

No, it's not sensible at all. The notion that I'm somehow bound to a team for life, because I happened to like them as a young child, is an absurdity.

Growing up with an emotional attachment to a team and then switching because you move is an absurdity.

But I will concede that there are plausible scenarios that would cause me to disown a team.

On this nonsense we just disagree. :)

The video embedded in this link includes the NHL's explanation. It states Anderson did not change the position of his body prior to the hit, which he obviously did. It also notes while the head was not the intended target the angle chosen allowed for no other outcome. It is what is, an unfortunate play that cost a kid with a squeaky clean history a suspension.

McAvoy suspended one game for hit to head

I switched from Bruins to Sharks as an adult after moving to the Bay Area, but it didn't happen overnight and there were a myriad of factors...

- Hockey kicks ass live and the Shark Tank is an awesome experience. Gotta have my hockey fix.

- 3hr time difference killed my Bruins watching pleasure. I'm still at work when the games are played.

- The internet back then wasn't what it is now, so following teams from afar wasn't as easy as it is now. Ditto cable. Combining these points with the previous one and one day the former Neely/Bourque Bruins were no longer recognizable.

- San Jose is the red headed stepchild of the 3 cities here. Kind of an underdog vibe. No way I become a SF Sharks fan.

- Sharks fans are nuts. After knocking off the Cup favorite Red Wings as an 8 seed in '94 and taking Toronto to game 7, the city and fans threw them a parade. Even today, Arturs Irbe jerseys continue to be worn to games.

Sometime around 2000 I realized I could name every player on the Sharks and only 5-7 on the Bruins and said to myself, "Holy ****. I'm a San Jose fan." They grew on me. No regrets. Not even for 2011.

Regards,
Chris

Would that allegiance have switched to the Habs if you had moved to Montreal?
There's a profound difference in rooting for an in division rival.

NFW. The hatred for Montreal was ingrained by that point. Still hate them.

Won’t matter. Bruins in 6 at most.

Therein lies the point, rooting for a divisional rival is a betrayal of everything being a true fan is about. Someone who's no more than a casual fan of a sport might not understand that but any real fan was thinking 'damn straight' reading your post.

I know you are taking a shot at me but I’ve already told you many times that I was never a die hard Rangers fan growing up. Besides, the Washington-NYR doesn’t even come close to the Boston-Montreal rivalry.

The filthy elbow shot on Backes jaw got no suspension... neither should McAvoy.

Agree completely, the Kukan elbow was deliberate, the McAvoy hit was really hard but he wasn’t aiming for the head. And it was clear from the post game handshakes that there was no ill will at all between McAvoy and Anderson.

Actually I was engaging Chris and asking for a bit of clarification. I respect his opinions and wanted to be sure I understood where he was coming from and that we were on the same page. It may come as a shock but everything isn't about you.

McAvoy has a bum ankle anyway- might as well get the extra rest. I don't care what anyone says about McAvoy "being okay," blocking a slapshot with your ankle is a world of hurt.

Over the years of living out here, I've noticed that for the rest of the local teams, it's "nice" when they do well. I don't have any particular hatred or schadenfreude(sp?) when they do poorly. My girlfriend is a die-hard Raiders fan and I have plenty of Giants/A's/Warriors/49ers fan friends so seeing them happy is a plus. Also, I see all of the good human interest stories on the players more than elsewhere so the players become more likable.

All that being said, while their success is "nice", I really don't give a **** if they do well. I really don't care if they come up short, either. Lots of apathy. Following my teams got so much harder after having kids, so I really don't have it in me to root hard for or against anybody else*.

I imagine if I moved to Montreal, I'd meet plenty of Habs fans, probably go to their homes for playoff parties and just not care how the team did. I'd be the Boston Fan (like I'm the Tuck Rule cheatin Pats fan here...big whoop) that's just there to watch a game.

* Except the Yankees. **** those guys.

Chris

I was born in Boston and raised in South Florida. Root for the Pats and the Red Sox because that's how I was raised. I'd root for the Bruins too if I watched hockey enough. I had to discover basketball and college football on my own... therefore I'm a Heat and Gator fan. It happens pretty easily if you're born in one place (or the bulk of your family is from one place) and you're raised in another.
I moved to Tampa after college in Mass. Although my teams have always been Sox, Pats, Celts and Bruins, I took a liking to the Bucs. They sucked and were always underdogs so it was easy to root for them. Then the Glazers took over and I wrote them off (they won right after firing Dungy, with his team). Never liked the Rays or Lightning.

When I moved to Miami no way was I rooting for Phins or Heat but I liked the Marlins mainly because of Beckett and Cabrera and celebrated ecstatically when they beat the Yankees in 2003.

Now that I'm in central FL, I just can't root for the Jags, even though I rooted for UCF when Bortles was there. Same goes for the Magic, yuk.

I have no problem to taking a liking to a local team that isn't your favorite team but some things you just can't do.

Many years ago I worked on a project in the Montreal area. We lived in Longueuil which is directly across the river from Montreal. To this day among our closest couple friends are people we met there. Our families occasionally Christmased together when the kids were younger and we still vacation together from time to time, nowadays almost always someplace warm. As strong as the bonds have been when it comes to hockey they have been sorely tested. While I love them dearly I fear for their sporting souls. The Habs are the antichrist on skates, there is no escaping it

And yeah, **** the Yankees
