Welcome to the Patriots Jarrett Stidham

Unsurprisingly cold reception by most of the board. Here is from someone who was close enough to both sides to know a thing or two about the pick (via Reiss) - ex Pats scout and director of Senior Bowl - Jim Nagy:

"My first exposure to Jarrett was at Auburn's pro day two years ago. He was just lighting it up. I don't know if you've seen him throw live yet, but he's the most beautiful thrower of the football in this year's draft class. He was so accurate that day to all levels, I grabbed a couple buddies on the coaching staff and asked, 'Is this him every day or is this an aberration?' They were like, 'This is him every day.' So my first exposure to Jarrett was so good, I've been on the bandwagon since. ... Now Auburn didn't have the year they were supposed to have this year and the fan base was disappointed. And Jarrett will tell you he didn't have the season he wanted, either. But when you evaluate the quarterback position, even more so than the other positions, you have to evaluate what's going on around the quarterback. It was just kind of a s---storm: A young offensive line that never jelled, they had protection issues with their young running backs ... but Jarrett became the whipping boy. I went to bat for him. I think Jarrett could end up as one of the steals of the draft. The popular narrative of this year's draft was that there were the four quarterbacks -- [Dwayne] Haskins, [Kyler] Murray, [Drew] Lock and [Daniel] Jones -- and then the next tier of [Will] Grier, Stidham, [Ryan] Finley, [Clayton] Thorson. To me, there wasn't a big shelf between the two groups at all. So to get Jarrett Stidham in the fourth round, he could potentially be the next guy."
That was why I instantly put him in the top 2 of my Rookie QB class.
Im shocked both Lock and Stidham went way after Haskins and Jones.
I couldn't get excited about Jones no matter what tape I watched or the combine nothing.
Lock Giant arm looks like a QB height and stature.
Got to the combine and looked ordinary.
Stidham every throw I saw looked beautiful more athletic then he is given credit for well spoken humble kid and football is important to him.
So I watch the combine Jones has a weak arm as advertised.
Thorson struggles Grier looks ok but every time I saw Stidham throw I was impressed.
I couldn't keep the kid out of my top picks no matter how much I heard Patriots love Finley barf or Jones.
Im really optimistic about him however last time I felt this happy about a rookie his name was Chad Jackson.

Good for you, Chris. Enjoy the process. Might be a longer one than most people think..

This is the most useful, dependable analysis on the kid, true? What else has been posted here that comes from this depth of experience and first hand observation?

More Nagy's Pats draft picks thoughts here:

Yes. But you can post all the first hand analysis you want and you will have people here still know he sucks, pick sucks etc. There was a nice clip posted on 1st page here from one of the best QB analysts in av media - yet for the smarter ones here the pick and the player still suck - and the fact that they never saw him live, never saw him at a single Pats practice/game etc will never interfere with that knowledge..

If this exact board existed when Brady was drafted you can only imagine the magnitude of educated suck takes..

To me the key that most web analysts failed to account for enough is here:
But when you evaluate the quarterback position, even more so than the other positions, you have to evaluate what's going on around the quarterback. I posted something similar earlier on our draft board (albeit w extremely limited knowledge).

I never understood the “bad under pressure“ takes. He was as clutch as it gets whenever given a fair chance - which was most of 2017 season. His poise in that season reminded me a bit of Brady's Alabama tape. In 2018 he didn't stand a chance. Looked like he had zero protection 100% of the time (including the mostly overlooked poor RB play in all - pass protecting, receiving and running - which Nagy of course didn't fail to mention). Playing under pressure is one thing - playing with zero protection/help/playmakers is quite another..

I have no idea where the NFL road will take him but in NE environment he should at least stand a chance.

For starter im glad NE can have a solid Mahomes impersonator on their scouting team (not saying he is like Mahomes) . and even if his ceiling turns out to be a back up in Foles capacity - id take that in the 4th every time..

___________
p.s.

From putrid 2018:
With some 5 minutes to go Auburn was 10 points down. Here its two minutes left and Auburn is 3 points down. The two new Auburn Patriots turn on the victory coup..

Anyone getting Ryan Mallett vibes from this one? Sure he excelled in the SEC when given the playmakers but can he do it in the NFL? Mallett could not handle it.

How do you get Mallet? Mallet took a year to throw the ball and came from a pro system with pro receivers- 3 of whom were drafted. Dak Prescott to me is the comp.

Stidham as the replacement to Hoyer in 2020 is a fine use of a 4th round pick.

Hey, at least he's gotta be better than Etling...right?

Tell us something. Have you EVER admitted to being wrong about a move Belichick has made? If so, when?

Yep...in 2006, when I supported his decisions to draft LaMa & Chad Jackson.

There’s just something about his delivery and placement on a lot of his throws that are a thing of beauty. If he can get the mental part of the Pats offense down, I have no doubt this coaching staff will have him progressing faster than most believe. The mental part is a big IF though. I’m excited. This camp/pre season should be a good time. We have Dawson, Wynn, and Bentley to look forward to, and add in this rookie class.....yeah, I’m excited! ;)
