What to do with Stidham.

Being a fourth-round pick doesn't in itself make him a lock to be on the 53, but he likely will make the team.

based on a 20 year sample size it does.

So, between living in the south and having some extended family who went to Auburn, I saw Stidham play most of his games over the past 2 years. If you asked me after his junior year, I would have told you he had a chance to play in the League. He wasn't elite at anything, but he was above average at everything. He could mostly make all the throws, keep his eyes downfield under pressure, occasionally throw receivers open and go through progressions. My attitude was: you put him in the right program, coach him up and don't rush him and he had some serious potential.

His senior year, as we all know, was a huge disappointment. It really started downhill when Kerryon Johnson and Kamaryn Pettway both declared for the NFL draft and Auburn suddenly couldn't run the ball worth a damn. Add in a poor offensive line, butterfingered receivers and an inept coaching staff and it all went to hell. As the season wore on, Stidham started regressing and developing some bad habits. His eyes didn't stay downfield as much and he would occasionally bail out of the pocket too early.

If you watched only his film from his senior year, you would be hard pressed to think he was an NFL quarterback. That's why this is such a great pick IMHO: you're getting great value in the fourth round for a shot at a starter quality quarterback. He proved in his junior season that he could play on the biggest stage and beat Georgia and Alabama in consecutive weeks. He doesn't need a perfect pocket to succeed but he does need some help.

Another way to look at it is to change Dwayne Haskins and Stidham's teams last year. Would Haskins be a first round pick if he played on Auburn last year? At OSU all the talent surrounding him was elite: he could sit in a rocking chair in the pocket and throw to NFL quality receivers. The running game was great. Does he do anything better than Stidham if the surrounding talent is comparable. Personally, I feel Stidham would have put up comparable numbers playing at OSU.

Look, am I telling you Stidham is a lock to be an NFL quarterback? Of course not, even most first rounders crash and burn. What I am saying is that you got 1st to 2nd round talent in the 4th round. That's great value

edited to add: I felt good for the kid after his bowl game against Purdue last year, when he threw for 5 tds, no interceptions and 300 yards. He had time to throw and was great.

Pulling for the kid

What you do with him is pit him against Hoyer in camp to compete for the back-up job. If he wins, you cut Hoyer and carry two QBs and let him sit behind Brady to learn. If he loses, you keep three QBs and let him sit behind Brady to learn. I'm not sure why anyone is factoring Etling in here. He's a PSer at best.

With the Pats having a strong offensive line and a great stable of running backs, Hoyer should be able to eke out a few victories if Tom goes down with an injury for a couple of games. He stays on the roster along with Stidham.
Not sure about that...

Remember, we only signed hoyer because Jimmy G was traded and we needed a backup for Brady. Hoyer beat out 7th round pick Etling last year but Im betting that Etling is gone and if Stidham beats out Hoyer, We will release or trade Hoyer and Stidham will be QB2 but if Hoyer beats out Stidham, itll be straight to the practice squad.
There isn't a chance in hell he'd make it to the practice squad. Either they keep three, or Hoyer is gone. My money is on 3.

I think it'll be Etling who's gone. They wouldn't have drafted Stidham if Etling showed anything. This year Hoyer stays at No. 2; Stidham becomes No. 3. If he works out, next year Hoyer is gone and Stidham slides into No. 2.
In that case I think Etling would remain on the PS rather than be gone.

Brady skipping the OTAs and passing camp again this year is a great thing for Stidham. He will be able to get a lot more work than if Brady was there.

Just like that hoyer was let go when Jimmy G showed well in camp, I would not be surprised that Hoyer is let go to the "shadow" roster. With Mcnown, Sanchez and Cassell still out there now never mind the 3 or 4 more that will be released to make way for this years picks in Sept, I would not worry about Hoyer being available.

There is a middle ground. Stidham could be good enough to be a backup and replace Hoyer in 2020, and no be good enough to be Brady's replacement.

FWIW, I see us drafting another quarterback next year and carrying Brady, Stidham and the new quarterback.

Reading profiles and watching tape, Stidham's upside looks tremendous. If it works, the Patriots may have found Brady's successor and for a song, if not, it's the loss of a mid-round draft pick and they keep looking. Seems like smart use of their draft capital.

.

Hey, he won seven games with the Browns in 2014, their most successful season in the last decade.

Perhaps if his surrounding cast is good.
He really struggled with the 49ers.

Wrong question.

More like what to do with Hoyer?

Keep Hoyer it costs the team $2 million more for a clipboard holder as we used to say.
Etling is cheaper ... as for close enough to Hoyer who knows.

when they draft a QB they keep 3 usually ... who the frig knows.

That was Ryan Mallett.

6 of one 1/2 dozen of another. They went with two qbs with one being a rookie.

TB was 10 years younger then. ;) (Errr, bad math, maybe 5. . . But under 40 same-same)

Stidham is a rough equivalent to Jacoby Brissett a few years back. Brissett spent zero time on the practice squad. Stidham and Hoyer both are interesting as potential backups, Hoyer won't be kicked off the team unless Stidham steps up in camp.

To be clear I do feel Stidham is "supposed" to replace Hoyer, but BB will give both players a chance to change his mind. As much as many fans here are neophiles and prospect lovers, we aren't going to just throw Hoyer's experience away if he's the better backup for this year.

No, Stidham will have to show positives in training camp that point that he may be able to keep us in games. If he does, I think they go with two QBs as I don't think Hoyer would be picked up by another team. I think bill would take the chance and keep another player on offense.

How is that not what I just said?
