What to do with Stidham.

I don't know how realistic is is in terms of reps and coaching time but Brady, Hoyer, Stidham with Etling hopefully on the PS would work for me. In 2020, Hoyer is gone and we could either keep Stidham and Etling as backups or just one if the other isn't progressing.

Maybe Etling is terrible and cut but even if he can "only" be a backup, with TB12 being 42 in August this is the time to keep an extra QB if there's any potential.

I agree.

We will need to replace Hoyer in 2020 and Brady in 2021 or 2022.

It seems reasonable to keep Etling on the PS this year, Next year, we would expect to have 3 QB's again: Brady, Stidham, and either Etling or a new QB (and continue this process). When Brady eventually goes, we will have a potential replacement and a potential backup in house, although obviously they might not get both jobs.

We have carried 3 QBs before and since he was a 4th round pick he is a lock to make the roster so no practice squad.
Yeah, there's no way he makes it to the practice squad.

Haven't seen Etling play since preseason so how does anyone know anything? What I do know is Hoyer isn't a long term answer but could play a game or 2 in a pinch.

Jason Stidham?!

I've gone through the entire multiverse and it's variations the past few days and I can confirm their has not ... nor will their ever be a time when Danny Etling beats out Brian Hoyer for QB2.

Hoyer and Garopolo both became QB2 in their rookie seasons. It's possible for Stidham to do that. Not a prediction or even a bet, but precedent has been set.

there is no way Stidham is going to the practice squad unless he totally falls on his face, which seems highly unlikely. He would never pass through waivers.

If the multiverse is infinite there is at least one universe where Etling is literally the second coming of Jesus and everyone named Brian Hoyer is born without eyeballs. I'm pretty sure Etling could make the second string under those circumstances.

And Hoyer was a udfa and garapoIR played against low level competition in college.
Stidham played in the SEC

Nope ... he'll need surgery to clean up something ...
If he's IR'd I think will be best ... Hoyer and/or Etling may be cut by a veteran signing perhaps.
I am no fan of Hoyer as a player so anything done to replace him is what I would prefer.

Correct.

Being on IR would mean he can't practice. More than anything, he needs reps. Plus the idea of a "redshirt year" is something that I don't really buy into as being a real thing with the Patriots. Guys have been IR-ed for seemingly minor things, but typically they never come back a year later, so there was no point. Remember the track guy / running back from Florida, Jeff Demps, IRed with a minor injury? We were all wringing out hands, evil genius style, thinking he had a year to get a football body instead of a track body. Then he'd contribute! He never came back, at least to the Patriots. Seems to have happened pretty often. I don't think people are IR-ed to stealthily develop them. That's an urban legend.

Etling is a goner. Most probably before camp. There are only so many reps to go around and even the QB3 often only gets the leftovers. A QB4 would just stand around doing nothing.
I think you need 4 QB's in camp, especially when one is 42. Lots of throws to be made, and I'd be OK if we had Brady on a throw clock early on in camp. However anytime after the first pre-season game, I'd be OK with dropping to 3 QB's and giving Brady the majority of the throws.

I was knocking the pick at first but after spending sometime watching his highlights and hearing some things I can see why they took him and based in what I've seen he could be one of the steals of the decade if it pans out. If you see some of his throws buddy can throw a football but we'll see.

Did not really like this pick due to his 2018 performance which was not very promising but in 2017 he looked a much better prospect.
He has come to a good situation in New England where he can sit for a while and pick up from 2 very experienced QBs and work on things without the pressure to start because there is some talent there.
Even if he only makes it as a backup, he gives good value over the course of his contract due to the economics of being a 4th rounder.

Being a fourth-round pick doesn't in itself make him a lock to be on the 53, but he likely will make the team.

Reading profiles and watching tape, Stidham's upside looks tremendous. If it works, the Patriots may have found Brady's successor and for a song, if not, it's the loss of a mid-round draft pick and they keep looking. Seems like smart use of their draft capital.

Perhaps it's my post-53 rose colored glasses but I'm feeling glass half full about everything Patriots. Number six was the one I wanted, badly, for the Pats and Brady so everything moving forward is glazing on the cherry.

The same could be said for Hoyer as well. He could’ve hit that cliff we keep hearing about Tom hanging out at. It’s going to be an interesting competition once they get started.

Glad we got our guy in Stidham
I feel alot better about Toms successor if we found him for a mid round pick that would be amazing since franchise QBs are the hardest positions to find.
I'm excited to see what we get from Etling as well, should be fully healthy and plenty of time to work on the playbook and mechanics.
Would be crazy to see depth chart like Brady Etling Stidham and in few years a combination of Etling Stidham or Stidham Etling being the main guys behind center.
