Patriots trade Hollister to the Seahawks

7th round picks don't do squat towards the cap until after final cutdowns when their salary actually hits. Otherwise, it's just their meager signing bonus.

Having $13M in cap space is hardly being "tight against the cap"..
Sure it is.
You gave to pay the rookies, add player 52 and 53, eat dead money on anyone cut, eat the contract anyone on IR and have money for in season acquisitions and nltbe bonuses that get hit.
13 mill isn’t a bonanza to cover that.

I've been going NUTS since the draft over the lack of a TE pick even though we could have had our pick of Smith, Knox, Warring, and Sternberger. All were fine prospects though Smith is really an HB who I didn't want unless it was at 56.

Not only that we drafted a worthy pick in the 2nd, although at a position we currently have SIX CB's who have started at least one game last season. We grabbed 2 C's although we currently have a very good one under contract for 2 more years. We grabbed a good G although we already have 2 of the better G's in the league and a solid back up in Karras. And instead of drafting a DT or TE, we draft ANOTHER RB although we have 4 good guys at the position already. To say this draft was baffling would be an understatement.

But that being said, you make a great point. Maybe this ISN'T about replacing Gronk. And it's not about how you attack the field in your passing game, but rather from what position you attack it from.

So instead of having a TE threatening the seam you threaten it say with a slower, but still a lot faster than most TE's from the slot. And he still has enough speed to run all of Gronks outside routes.

What you DON'T have is Gronk to block on the line. You can solve part of that problem by having one of the PLETHORA of OLmen we have lining up outside the OT.

So just maybe the sky isn't falling just yet and we don't have to make a big trade for a guy like Roudolph. We just have to redistribute the attack threats with the talent that already exists on the team and go from there
I guess I view it this way. Outside of QB, a good two-way TE is the most valuable player you can have on offense. BB saw it with Bavaro and kept spending real assets on it when the rest of the league was undervaluing it (plan for Kyle Brady in 1995; Graham, Watson, Gronk).

But there are only a few of those guys. Most TEs are tweeners. Guys who aren’t good enough blockers to be on the OL, but aren’t good enough and fast enough pass catchers to be wide receivers. I view it like outfielders who have the range and speed of left fielders and the bats of center fielders.

So if you can’t get what you really want because they’re now being drafted top 10 instead of late 1st, then why settle for cheap knockoffs? Get an actual big WRs who can play in the slot and potentially on the line instead of an imitation “move TE”. If your blocking TE only had Dwayne Allen’s receiving capabilities and the opponent doesn’t respect him when in the passing pattern, why not use an OLineman instead?

All things being equal you’d rather have the two way TE. But if you can’t, well, let’s see what fruit this approach may bear.

6 OL men, 2 big WR (Harry and Thomas), Michel , Develin, and Edelman at QB running an option offense.

We will only bring Brady in for 3rd and longs as well as the 4th quarters if we are playing from behind!

If I’m counting to 51 correctly, no impact because he’s just replaced in the top 51 with another player at the same salary.

Miguel would be proud of you, Grasshopper.

Outside of Anderson, the TE's currently on the roster are 255 plus. I'm not sure they are going with a no TE offense so much as the primary role the TE will play. The success of the running game last year had as much to do with Allen and Gronk as it did the Oline.

Tight end's a weird position. There just aren't many good ones in the NFL these days and the best ones are basically oversized wide receivers.

Ok, let's get an oversized WR!

Surprised they got anything. He did play special teams, yes?

Trading FOR a TE makes a lot more sense than trading AWAY a TE. This is a real head scratcher.

I think it's a contract thing. You're probably better off without 7 round picks if you're tight against the cap.
It’s a math thing.
You’re not.

7th round picks are about the cheapest roster spots you can get. Often less expense than UDFA’s.
Kyler Murray will get a $20mm signing bonus. Seventh rounders get $80K.
I guess if you had 20 7th rounders and only two made the roster that would be a problem.

Is it? The odds of Hollister making the final 53 were quite long. The Patriots turned nothing into something.

I assume with 3 QBs and 5 RBs being likely on the 53 roster we would only carry 2 TEs anyway so that makes it even more unlikely for him and I assume next to ASJ and LaCosse, Stephen Anderson would be in front of him as well. So you are talking about the 4th or 5th TE on the roster.
and Izzo

Maybe he hasn’t made enough progress to make the final 53 this coming year, but he managed to earn a spot last year, beating out a few jags in the process. He also looked good in training camp/preseason.

BB fleeced Seattle Hollister sucks.

Sure. Presumably the Patriots believed he'd reached his ceiling in their system and they were better off concentrating their effort on Izzo, Beck, and possibly Anderson.
