Can we afford Thuney?

facts:
we paid mason 10M/yr

if people's stance is that Thuney is not as good, can we see proof?

I think just because of Brady's final years, you go into OL $ a bit deeper, obviously we wont pay high $ for LT anytime soon, hold on to Thuney for the same 10M/yr if he's good with it

I think Thuney is as good as Mason although a lot of people rate him lower. We extended Mason for 5 years for $50m in Aug 2018 and Mason was drafted a year ahead of Thuney so logically this summer is the time to have a chat with Thuney about an extension.

So the questions are:

1. Is Thuney worth $10m per year. If not how much is he worth.
2. If so, can we afford extend him same as we did Mason.

And while Hjalte Froholdt was drafted with an eye to Thuney's impending FA next year, I have no idea how and if Yodny Cajuste's drafting affects the interior OL if at all.

Thoughts?

The Pats will have more than $60M in cap space available going into next season. Why are we wringing our hands needlessly at this point when so much can happen between now and then??

Froholdt was drafted because the Pats have Thuney, Karras, Ferentz and Schwenke as free agents next year. That's 4 of the 6 Interior O-linemen who'd been on the 2018 Roster. Adding an Interior linemen to develop behind everyone who would be under contract for more than a year seems like normal Belichick operation.

My guess is they’ll let Thuney walk rather than pay him 6-10 million per year as they need to balance out their salaries. They were really tight to the cap this year which feels like they need to make an adjustment there. Letting selected veterans walk, given they have a younger replacement ready, is a sound strategy.

The cap this year has nothing to do with the cap next year. The Pats projected free cap space going into next season is between $60M-$80M. This idea that they "need to make an adjustment" just has no foundation what so ever.

What proof could possibly be provided that you would accept as sufficient without contesting?

Much of $62M is "spoken for"

1) We have $62M of 2020 cap space at the moment, not counting the 2019 rookie class.

2) How much do you think that Brady will take? $25M?

3) We will also have our usual number of free agents in addition to Thuney: Edelman, Van Noy, McCourty and J Jones. I don't think that we have very many receivers before the 2020 cap total of $62M.

1) Where did you get 62? OTC currently has it at $76M.. I said 60-80 because of how the cap can be manipulated.

2) How much Brady takes is irrelevant at this point. He's not signed beyond this year and he may actually retire.

3) REALLY? I'd never have guessed that we'd have free agents next year. Not with only 33 people signed currently.

Sorry that a player who I know won't be a $10M cap hit regardless of the contract he signs doesn't get me all in a tizzy about the remaining cap space the Pats have when it sits over $76M currently

New England Patriots 2020 Salary Cap

Yes, I presume that Brady is playing in 2020.

Even if Brady decides to retire, it is extremely unlikely that there will be no dead money. That would require no extension.

No

I have always believed that the basic structure for managing their cap is by how much they delegate by % for each unit. That fluctuates year to year, and evolves as the game changes, but they try to balance how they pay for their positional units. They will pay one Guard the big money, but will use a young player to replace the other. Right now their big money unit is their defensive backfield, whereas in the early years of the dynasty it was the DL. The talent they have brought in on the OL in the last two draft’s makes it pretty much a certainty that this will be Thuney’s last season here.

I think we could afford him but I don’t see us paying ten mill a year for him

he is worth enough to get us a 3rd round comp pick

A rare case of a guy who plays in 4 consecutive SB's (I'm counting the next one) since entering the league. 2 rings already, good player.

Someone will throw a ton of money on him.
