I think Thuney is as good as Mason although a lot of people rate him lower. We extended Mason for 5 years for $50m in Aug 2018 and Mason was drafted a year ahead of Thuney so logically this summer is the time to have a chat with Thuney about an extension.

So the questions are:

1. Is Thuney worth $10m per year. If not how much is he worth.
2. If so, can we afford extend him same as we did Mason.

And while Hjalte Froholdt was drafted with an eye to Thuney's impending FA next year, I have no idea how and if Yodny Cajuste's drafting affects the interior OL if at all.

Thoughts?

Wynn can play LG as well, if he's not going to play LT.

Yes, we can "afford" Thuney. If Belichick thinks that he's worth anywhere near what mason was, he'll find away.

That being said, I think that Thuney is playing his last year. We have drafted 2 players who can replace him. And they don't cost $10M a year.

I don't think it'd be wise to pay two OGs big contracts. OG is not a premium position and quality OGs can be found in day 2 or 3 of the draft. We drafted Hjalte Froholdt (who is supposedly highly rated) and we can also move Isaiah Wynn inside if he doesn't pan out at LT. I'm 90% sure Thuney will be gone after next season, probably to the Cardinals or Giants.

Thuney is a LG and they tend to be cheaper than RGs as those are usually the ones which effect the running game more. Of course some LGs get paid a lot because there are RBs that naturally run to the left, but Thuney isn't in that class. After those elite LGs the price drops down a lot. The average starting LG (16th/17th best) is making an average of about 4.6M/year. I would call Thuney around an average starting LG. He's solid but not amazing or anything.

I think he'll probably help set the market for LGs at his level so maybe he'll hit something like 6M/year. Not much more than that I think. It would make him the 9th highest paid LG and reset that as the mark a good starting LG should make.

He beat Donald 1v1 twice during the Superbowl winning drive. That's impressive. He'll get paid based on that alone.

My guess is they’ll let Thuney walk rather than pay him 6-10 million per year as they need to balance out their salaries. They were really tight to the cap this year which feels like they need to make an adjustment there. Letting selected veterans walk, given they have a younger replacement ready, is a sound strategy.

This is the whole camp is crap argument.
Yes we can afford thuney, we can afford anyone, but everyone you sign affects who else you can sign.
We could afford to have 5 10 mill a year OL and the cap would prevent it.
But the cap WOULD cause that to result in going very cheap in other areas.
The cap is crap argument says you can afford anyone so don’t blame the cap. Reality is that argument is stupid because every contract has cap implications that affect the rest of your roster.

They are tight to the cap every year and basically NEVER are in cap hell and have to cut players to free up money. The 2 go together. Undisciplined teams flip flop from capped out to clearing out all the bad contracts so they can sign new ones.
Teams that gave long range cap intelligence and planning are always able to operate under the cap but never have years of cap bonanza because they manage their roster, contracts and cap over the long range and not year to year.

Lots of unknowns still.

I do not think they will pay Thuney more than Shaq regardless if he is "worth it" or not. I can't recall BB paying big bucks for two players who play the same position. Ever.

We also don't know what their cap & cost structure will be in 2020. I'm assuming there will some expensive players (DMc, maybe High, and others) coming off the books so theoretically they will have room (unless they go FA shopping).

Very possible they let him walk and snatch up the comp pick (assuming 4th rounder as I don't think he'll get huge money but very good money).

I think they will evaluate the rooks to see if they can replace Thuney.
However we should give Tom the best o line we can in his remaining years.

You can't pay everybody that's why you Draft that position every year like CB. Also Ted Karras have experience at both positions.

It's always possible that Thuney won't chase every last buck and may be happy with a home town discount and going to the Super Bowl every year without a ticket.

I’d rather have $40 million in my OL than $40 million in a QB. Just sayin’.

I've been a fan for 30 years. A hometown discount is very, very rare, and IMO should be ignored, rather than being a post every time a player is in his contract year.

Bruschi was the exception. Edelman may be the exception, although he may have just concluded that he would be much more productive with Brady than anywhere else, and therefore end up with more total money.

We can afford him, yes.

Can "we" afford him? I'm not writing him any checks.

Yes they can afford him, Mason is better but he will be paid more if he leaves.

Ask me again after we get the numbers from the supposedly upcoming Brady extension.
