NFL Draft: Day 3

Webster is our pick. Mr Irrelevant is tight end Caleb Wilson. Wow Pats didn't like the tight ends in this draft! Onto UDFAs!

Liked the move to take a CB. They often find some hidden gems there, and the current depth chart could scare away potential UDFA.

I noticed after the Combine that he was #1 on 3sigma athlete for corners, and wondered if he'd make it here late. This supports my theory that even the Patriots look to testing late in the third day, despite Caserio's protests that testing isn't that important. Darryl Roberts, Keion Crossen, Ken Webster -- seems like a clear trend.

Overall, an incredible draft. Very pleased!

Webster is a F-REAK athlete. That much is evident.

Still worried about TE need. If ASJ can't put it together, we are in quite a bit of trouble, no?

Patriots fans have developed a warped view of the importance of TEs thanks to having the best one ever on the team for a decade. Most TEs only manage a few hundred yards catching a year. The ones that exceed this (Engram, Ebron, Kelce, Graham) are allergic to blocking and therefore might as well be low end WRs. The Patriots need a solid blocker who has enough pass catching potential that defenses at least have to consider him as an offensive option. I am not concerned that they can find someone who meets that standard. So no, not "quite a bit of trouble" at all.

What I predicted versus what really happened:

R4P16: Anthony Nelson (R4P5 Tampa)
R4P31: Ryan Finley (R4P2 Bengals)
R4P32: Foster Moreau (R4P35 Raiders) pretty close on this one!
R7P25: Saquan Hampton (R6P4 Saints)
R7P29: Bryan Mone (undrafted/currently not signed)
R7P32: Ben Burr-Kirven (R5P4 Seahawks)
R7P38: Penny Hart (UDFA Colts)

I'd better keep the day job.

I’m disappointed that we didn’t draft another WR when there were so many options still available. As LJRomanoff says, TE is less of a concern if we have a strong WR corps with our running game, but I still fear that unless JG returns we’re an injury away from looking thin.

Dorsett should be pretty good if given the chance. It seems like they weren't convinced of another receiver in this draft.

Some folks think that we need 6 or 7 WR's. We will carry 4 or 5 plus Slater. Dorsett knows the system and is our #4. We need 2 players that know the system well.

I wouldn't have another WR at any of our roster spots instead of who we chose.

A WR chosen in the 4th round or earlier might have been better than Dorsett or not. That possibility wasn't worth not taking who we took in the first 4 rounds. For better or worse, drafting someone that early would have guaranteed that play a spot on the 53.

Belichick chose a DT who will likely make the team in the 5th, and a punter who might make the team (and save us $4M over 4 years). He was the second best punter in the draft. Belichick probably felt that that a WR drafted would likely not make the team, and that his choices had more value to the team. I tend to agree.

Belichick also knew that there were lots of UDFA possibilities that might have as good a chance at helping the team, compared to a 6th or 7th round pick).

================
WIDE RECEIVERS

Edelman

DT or Gordon are one spot

Harry

Dorsett

FIFTH ROSTER SPOT POSSIBILITIES
Gordon (if DT makes the 53)
Ellington (being a KR is a plus)
Harris
Berrios
none (just carry Berrios and/or 1-2 UDFA's on the Practice Squad)

Dorsett should be pretty good if given the chance. It seems like they weren't convinced of another receiver in this draft.

Your opinion of the entire draft selections?

Thanks

Go Pats and BB

HUH? The Patriots have the following at WR:

Julian Edelman
Damoun Patterson
Braxton Berrios
Phillip Dorsett
Maurice Harris
Bruce Ellington
Demaryius Thomas
Josh Gordon
N'Keal Harry

Figure that Edelman, Thomas, Harry are locks. Then there are 2 spots for Dorsett, Berrios, Harris, Ellington and Patterson. Not to mention whomever they officially sign as UDFA.

It's April. Worry about "looking thin" if Harry looks like crap and none of the others seem to be standing out during TC..

Anyone seen a good overall recap? The one year I don’t follow the picks coming off the board and I miss the one draft everyone is happy with. ****ing-A man.

This. We won 3 Super Bowls before Gronk, one when he was injured, and another in his last year where he was a shadow of himself. We only won with prime Gronk in 2014. That's not to say he wasn't tremendously important to this team, but it's possible to win without a super elite all time great TE on the roster and for most teams their TE is just a serviceable guy who can put up some production and block, or a glorified WR.

Yeah but realistically the only one on that list you can be certain of is Edelman and even he's getting up their in age. Harry is actually the guy that is the most likely to be the next best producer after him and he's a rookie. Thomas is coming off a serious injury that could end him, Gordon might not get cleared this year and if he does he has never stayed clean so you can't rely on him, Dorsett just is at best a solid 3, then everyone else is just kinda okay or fringe.

Realistically our best case scenario is that Edelman stays Edelman, Thomas returns healthy and can contribute and be a solid stretch receiver who can open up some plays, Harry being a strong contributer as a big body, Gordon coming back and being a force of nature and our true number 1. Then Dorsett and one of the other guys being more depth and a solid 4th/5th option. If that happens we will have one of the most dangerous corps in the league.

But there's also a VERY REAL possibility that it's just Edelman and hoping Harry can make a quick transition because we never get Gordon back and Thomas' injury is too much to overcome. In which case we are in as bad shape as last year
