Everyone Seems VERY Happy With This Draft So Far

I don’t think people are seeing the forest for the trees with Williams. Yes, CB wasn’t a need. At all. But I think they’re targeting Chung’s role for him while getting enough versatility to play on the outside in a pinch, if needed. That’s a big boy. He’s going to make it tough for TEs in the red zone.
Secondary is definitely a need. McCourty twins are realistically one or two years away from retiring. Dawson just had a red shirt year. Chung will be 32 by the start of the season.

It is a great time to seek the potential replacement.

While the running back selection seems odd, this offense does want to run more than they did 5 or so years ago when they were running the no huddle all game. Makes sense with Brady getting up there in age. Last year they went through an early stretch where it seemed like White was the only healthy back.
Agree 100%. It would not shock me if the run/pass this year inches even closer to the 50/50 than last year. I think that might have been the goal last year but Hill, Sony and Burk's injuries put that on hold for a bit

I'm happy none of the picks have come out of left field. Even JoeJuan Williams who was perhaps the biggest surprise was getting 2nd round buzz. Taking him at the spot they did isn't crazy. It sucks that they had to trade up to do it but the value wasn't some horrible reach. A lot of people had him going around there even if the general public hadn't caught up yet.

I guess JJ impressed BB in that workout. I still like the Harry pick the most.

# 1 pick was a position of need.

Then its off the rails trading all over the place and taking Best Player Available. RB? I get the Saban connection and rarely if ever has Nick done BB wrong, but Sony, Whitey, Burka, Bolden are in the fold already. Jeremy Hill looked like a baller in preseason last year. Couldnt NE give him another go or sign another FA for the Pats Running Back By Committee?

I really hoped to have WR sewed up by now with another draftee likely in the deep threat mode and a TE. Gronk is likely coming back, but the Pats could have used some youth at the position last season.

I think the team offensively will be stacked next year. Just look at the weapons Brady has:

Edelman-Thomas-Harry-Dorsett-Gordon-Sefarian Jenkins

Michel-Harris-White-Hill-Develin-Boldin

In many ways, it's better than last year's offense with Gronk. There's more depth at WR and RB.

Hill over Burk?

No D Thomas?

There are simply no TEs left that are "starter" material.

Looks like the 3 Running Back offense for 2019.

The 4 Horseman if you include Bradys speed and elusiveness.

All picks so far were projected between 30 - 100 on most draft boards so the angst over a "reach" has yet to materialize. We'll see how many of the 5 work out but I really like what has been done so far as it is easy to see this group getting some playing time early.

I have to say, ever since I discovered this forum in 2013, this seems the most positive the board has ever been about a draft. Usually we are inundated with 'he is a bum' comments but you all seem pretty chuffed. As I don't get college football over here on my SKY package I look to you all at this time of year, and you have put me in a great mood.

My only real question is how the new CB projects. Gilmore and JC are excellent, so does this mean Dawson is falling down the depth chart, J-Mac could be on his way to safety, and Crossen is the odd man out?
It’s about competition.
JC is far from a lock as a cb2. Corner is definitely a position where you can look good at first and then not so much especially as your role expands. JMac is at an age where he could be gone at any time. We will see how Dawson goes. Crossen in is a fringe player very likely gone with this pick. J jones has a year left.
In a crazy FA market we just got a potentially good starting corner and will probably pay him less over 4 years than jones gets in 2020 and jones is a 50% of the snap guy at the very very best.

joejuan also could end at safety or play numerous roles in the secondary.

If you look to 2020 the corner depth is probably.
Gilmore
Joejuan
JC
Dawson
So as is usual bb makes a draft choice with next year in mind and gives the guy a shot to earn as much role as he can without being totally needed as a rookie in a need spot for year 2.

Because there is no bs DB reach with no notable positives. JJW is big, agile for his size, and is a film geek. This is nowhere near as bad as drafting ex. Jordan Richards who was not good in college and super unathletic. Everybody hated that pick and lo and behold he was arguably the biggest bust since Chad Jackson. No undersized Cyrus Jones whose main strength is punt returning...

We lost out on Fant, Smith, Knox, Warring, and Sternberger. I am most pi$$ed about losing Sternberger to Houston one pick ahead of us. But we ended up with Winovich so it worked out.

We didn't take a 6th round safety in the 2nd round. We usually have 1 or 2 wtf picks in the first 3 rounds. We got winovich which is my favorite pick in this draft. He will be the steal.of the draft.

This draft does seem eerily too good . Nailed the needs. No severe reaches. Solid players.

They get a WR who looks like a big Troy Brown

They pick a CB who IMO will either become the next DMc or Chung.

They get the next Nink

They get an athletic LT who punishes in the run game and hasn't allowed a sack since 1999.

Only quibble is RB but the draft is all about getting good players. Harris is a good player who was not a reach. If Sony and Burk are healthy, great. If not...it's a need. He may be more of a 2020 need but meh.

TE is another quibble but whatever.
I think Harris moves ahead of burkhead.
He is the ideal piece to back up both Michel and white.
Bb had always preferred when possible to have a backup to rb1 to get a drive per half or so. Harris can also back up or take some snaps from white as passing game back bringing a better runner into the mix.
It’s really what burkheads role was but Harris will be a huge improvement.
If Harris has rookieitis burkhead can stay in that role.

I am not really happy with it....yet. There is a lot of glitz in the draft so far, but I hate to see BB / Josh take a first round WR; they have a terrible track record with high-round WRs. BB just cannot bring himself to draft a WR who is not a Boy Scout, but great WRs do not come in that favor. And who knows what Josh was thinking with his bad picks at Denver.

I have other question marks. Cajuste was wearing two knee braces in a picture I saw of him and holding a DE. I love Joejuan, but is he fast enough? Winovich has the right attitude, but he does not look that strong.

Excellent. This all but guarantees that we just had our best draft ever.

Go read theganggreen.com

They have been predicting for quite some time that teams will load up on small and fast linebackers to counter spread style offenses..............

......and the Patriots will revert to a ground and pound offense.
