Your shameless pre-Belichick/flying Elvis Patriots gimmick is hilarious. Keep doing you, it’s fantastic.

The Pats had great teams and players pre Brady that get no mention.

Francis was a beast.

Only if we need to run down Champ Bailey

I like the idea. What is not to like besides his age?

Hmmm. Since we didn't want to re-sign him when he was young and had lots left in the tank, I'm going to go with, "no."

Probably his game since we didn't re-sign him when he didn't have the age factor.

Well, he signed a 3 year/12m deal with the Browns in the 2010 off season. Then we drafted Gronk and Hernandez.

3yrs/12m in 2010 is like 3yrs/18m in 2019.....no way we were going to do that for a 29 catch TE.

Thanks!

Shout out to your shameless fake-fan fly-by-night bandwagon flying elvis wouldn't-care-about-the-franchise-if-we-were-losing gimmick!

Francis was the original gronk.
Nah, there's only one Gronk but he's probably the closest you're going to get to him.
I remember watching him in amazement but when Gronk came around that hit a whole new level for me. Then when you add in his childlike goofy enthusiasm for life it completes a unique Gronk package. He stands alone

Plot - thickens

Not sure it means much.

He could be a safety net of sorts in case draft falls a certain way or meant as veteran presence to guide young drafted players like Crumpler in 2010. Or -- of course -- it could also mean that we will stay put at TE on day 1/2 to invest into other positions.

Fortunately all this speculation is soon over with.

From Mike Reiss today:
2. Watson's potential return: The Patriots have a notable void at tight end and veteran Benjamin Watson is considering a return to the NFL after intending to retire, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the sides came to an agreement this offseason. And if it happens, it would bring Watson's career full circle as he entered the NFL as the Patriots' first-round draft choice in 2004. After Watson's wife, Kirsten, delivered twins on April 24, Watson noted on Instagram -- with side-by-side pictures of his Patriots introduction and him holding newborn twins -- that it was the same day he was drafted by the Patriots. A coincidence? Or a foreshadowing of what might be coming?
Tom Brady's connection with Tyler Vrabel reflects passage of time

Francis was the original gronk.

I was too young to watch him play myself but until he took his last breath, my dad remained furious about the lack of a pass interference call on the Raiders in the 1976 playoff game. According to my dad the patriots just needed a first down to seal the game and run out the clock. Grogan threw a pass to Frances and the DB “pinned both of his arms to his sides” (my dad’s words) but no call was made. This may have been one play before Sam “Bam” Cunningham inexplicably ran out of bounds 1 yard short of the first down marker. Those are two of the three plays that he never could get over, the third, of course, being the terrible roughing the passer call, which may have been the correct call in 2019 but it sure as sh’*t was not in 1976.

Now my dad was at times prone to hyperbole when it came to the patriots (for instance, he was convinced that Irving Fryar was betting on games and dropping passes intentionally), so I would be interested to hear what one of the more mature posters here has to say about that play involving Frances.

Actually, given his imprisonment for mortgage fraud, my dad may have been correct about Fryar after all. Ironically, he was the first hand surgeon called when Fryar cut his fingers fighting with his wife before the AFC championship Game in 1985 but he was busy in the operating room at another hospital, so one of his colleagues sewed up Fryar.

Great post. I remember all of it. Howard Cosell loved Russ Francis, called him all-world. Remember Francis getting blasted for not wearing his helmet on the sideline. Said it hurt to have it on. It wasn't like he was sitting on it (Raiders).

Almost ... Was the LB Villapiano ... IIRC, the "missed" call was the responsibility of Ben Dreith - Foxborough's favorite official.

all world is my 3rd favorite TE for the patriots.

#2 for me was Ben Coates, a true go-to receiver.

Francis was a beast.
