I don't think it is a great signing but better than nothing at this time. He has to make the team. Lots can happen before the season starts.

Dillion was ranked 5th
Maroney was ranked 57th

Maroney had a total of 14 NE career starts.
Sony Michel already has 8 NE starts as a rookie # 1 RB who was injured.

Only a fool would keep banging the drum that Maroney was a #1 NFL RB.

No, they deserve each other.

The fact that he's had alcohol addiction issues is actually good news. It is a clear factor that's been holding him back, physically and emotionally, because that's what addictions do, to every facet of a person's life. So IF it gets fixed, it provides an immediate, tangible window for his performance to improve significantly. Guys can spend whole offseasons at special camps working on their physical ability and have nothing close to the upside that can come out of shaking off an addiction.

That, plus the fact that he'll now get better coaching, be given more specific roles, be coming in to a position that's wide open, and work with the GOAT at QB, and there is a little more promise in this than the average JAG signing.

Dillon was not ranked 5th and the stat you are talking about has nothing to do with the role of the player and their place on the depth chart.

Seems that way. I recall some of the huge PatsFans draft hype being about Jabal Sheard and Cordarelle Patterson. Those aren’t the only two, but they stood out to me because the Pats waited to buy while their stock was low.

Nah. What's Felger-level stupid is your comment on the issue. I've got nothing against the move, because I don't see any real downside. But, then again, I don't take it as a moral affront (or pretend to it as a take moral affront) when players with non-football character issues are signed by football teams. Others, however, do, and that's widely known and not restricted to Patsfans.com. So claiming

Bringing in a stiff, or even a JAG, is not a great move. It's just the bringing in of a stiff/JAG, in this case with baggage. It's the same crappy/routine, chuck a dart at the board move that teams make all the time. Now, if the stiff morphs into a player, you've got a win, and you can then say "What was a crap/routine move turned into a great move" and pretend that there was magical insight into why that particular stiff/JAG was going to make it when so many others did not, but where nowhere near that right now.

ASJ is at least as likely to be as good THIS YEAR as a draft choice at that position (look at the history of rookies at TE - prove me wrong).

THIS YEAR. Just this year. He's a security blanket. He makes minimum, costs them no draft pick in the comp formula, and the total cost if he's cut is 50K...nothing.

To me, a pick-up like this means that after they get the TE they want, if there's one in particular, when they get to the second one, they can pass if there's someone else they like better at another position.

This is literally a no-lose situation, unless you consider $50 a travesty.

He played pretty well his first half dozen games in 2017 including a game against the Pats then seemed to really slow down. Not sure if it was injuries or what but he appeared to be serviceable in the few games I watched him play. I know nothing about LaCosse but I assume he is the current TE lead based on what he was signed for.
