The draft

I'd like to see the Pats re-sign Hogan before the draft and have a deal ready to go on Allan Bailey. Then they can go in with a lot more flexibility.

Bailey is considering other offers. But, I do agree.

Additional possibilities are to sign Shelton, John and/or McClellan.

Allen Bailey would be a tremendous pickup.

Hogan I guess if he helps the new receivers learn the route tree or if we have a bad run of preseason injuries. Sure hope our receiver core is restocked and Hogan does not make the team. He played like doo last year.

Sure the Patriots will be open to trading for receivers on other teams during/after the draft. We have some cap room and draft picks to offer. Nice having a surplus of picks this year and likely again next year along with 3 injury red shirted players from last year who still hold promise.

On the defensive side of the ball, I see a need for Chung safety/hybrid linebacker replacement. We seem thin at linebacker/tight end coverage, speed rusher after Chung. Add in his age and a 19 game schedule the need is there. Any chance Dawson can get some more sand in his pants and play that role?

Over the years Bill has taken shots in the second round at this type of player with many misfiring so a bit scary to hear the pick and read the familiar bio. Still it is a real need on the team. I think the Patriots draft is stacked in part by resource availability. If they think by the fifth round all the safety options are gone that meet their profile, but plenty of choices among other positions of equal grade remain, they will take the safety in an earlier round banking on some of those other choices remaining. My money is on Bill taking a linebacker/safety hybrid in the first three rounds. And we will gnash our teeth about it.

I expect a safety to be drafted in the 2nd round, the 3rd at the latest. Both Chung and McCourty could be gone after the 2019 season.

DOUBLE DIPS
As of now, we have needs for 2 players at TE, WR, DL, OL and DB.
Obviously, some of these needs could be met by signing free agents or by trade. And some could be met by backups on the current team.

Pats had Daniel Jones and Will Grier in for visits today.

While a double dip would make sense at either WR or DT I don't see it happening in the draft inside the top 101.

7 picks inside the top 101:

DE, DT, WR, TE, DB, OT, LB/OG

I just saw Springfield native Christian Wilkins interviewed on NFL Live and he came off very well. He's very smart, graduated in 2 1/2 years and was a co-captain at Clemson. I would love to trade up and get him.

I could see it at WR if they go with one at 32 (or trade back from 32). AJ Brown and Isabella/Mecole Hardman for example. As for DT, I think it’s possible they don’t draft one, but go with an Allen Bailey/Timmy Jernigan type after the draft.

One of two or three I’d be happy to trade up for (Hockenson, Wilkins, Ferrell).

How is your preferences not a double dip at DL?

Patriots meeting with potential additions to receiving corps

The Patriots lost tight end Rob Gronkowski to retirement, saw wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson sign with the Bears and wide receiver Chris Hogan remains a free agent, so those spots look like areas that could be addressed via the draft even with wideout Philip Dorsett back and other free agent signings at both positions.

Pelissero reports that former Ole Miss wide receiver AJ Brown, former South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel and former Iowa tight end Noah Fant are in New England.

Why wouldn't Obi be the future Strong Safety? Chung's replacement?

Which of the TE's (not named Hockenson) are ready to be counted on as a Game One starter?
