Gost is back: Two-year deal

FWIW, when he was franchised in 2015, they didn't sign the LTD until literally the last day they could (July 15). I wonder if the issue is more his agent than Gostkowski.

The guy also hadn’t missed one since 2006 and set an NFL record for consecutive PATs made.

He missed a PAT v. Atlanta in SB 51, a PAT and FG in SB 52 and a FG in SB 53.

Oops, sorry man. I didn’t detect the sarcasm while initially reading your comment.

It’s ok bro. I know you are one of the for real McCoy’s

Not meaning to pile on because I still think that he’s the best option and hope to see him re-signed, but he also missed a very important XP in the AFCCG loss at Denver, the year prior, when they were forced to try the two point conversion at the end, failed, and lost 20-18.

They wouldn't have needed to go for two at the end if they had kicked on one of the fourth-down tries in the Denver red zone that failed. . . .

He has nerve problems sometimes. I'll take him every Sunday...and Thursdays too.

Yea I remember that pissed me off, that 3 would of sent us to SB50, led to a 3 peat in 2016, surpassing the Steelers with 7 this pass SB, oh well.

Early in the game, yes, but he locks in in the 4th quarter.

I think part of the problem is that he was GOAT trajectory pretty much up until about 4 years ago. He could still end up the greatest kicker of all time if he piccks it up a bit. He is still fairly young for a kicker. The issue with many fans is that he has missed some pretty key kicks more recently, basically meaning he has come back down to earth and isntwhat we had been accustomed to which was elite.

It would be interesting to take his numbers from the last 4 years to see how they stack up with the rest of the kickers in the league today.

Ghost postseason: 88.6 percent. Adam V postseason: 88.8 (which includes a kind of odd year when he went 14-15)

Eh, I don’t know. Personally, I think using that example in an attempt to excuse Gostkowski from missing a kick in the season’s biggest game 4 years in a row is kind of lame. Just my opinion, of course.

Due to the missed XP, they found themselves down 20-12 late in the game. No one could have predicted the idea of getting that many bites at the apple. Common sense says that you’d probably go for it, trying to score a TD and a two pointer, and that’s exactly what Bill Belichick did.

What is the average distance? Have to compare apples to apples .
Vinatieri was kicking 46 yarders in the snow or winning 2 Superbowl kicks, while the Patriots have repeatedly punted or went for offense on 4th down instead of risk letting Gostkowski try a 45yd FG

I don't get the hate for Gost. He has been one of the best kickers in the league for a decade. His play has probably tailed off a bit the last couple of years but he is still a top 5 kicker. That is where I imagine the money issues reside. I assume he wants a pay rise from his last deal and BB no longer sees him right at the top of the tree. I'd still give him a 3 year $12m type deal if he wants it.

I'm on the fence about Ghost. I said myself on this forum that after the Miami game this year (everyone remembers the Miami Miracle and Gronk being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Ghost missed a chip shot figgie and an XP in that game that would have negated the "miracle") I considered him officially unreliable. It feels like that old boyfriend where you're getting a little tired of the little things about him that drive you nuts (like not making kicks he should make with his eyes closed), but is there really anybody better out there? Are you going to regret it 2 days after you break up? I feel like the Pats and Ghost are the girlfriend and boyfriend in this situation.

This has literally never happened in Gostkowski’s playoff career.

They decided to not go for a 49 yarder in a dome in Super Bowl XLII and instead tried to convert 4th and 13. A long time ago and a little longer, but close. Other than that, yeah, not “repeatedly.”

AV was a great kicker for us but lets not take the snow kick and turn it into something it isnt. And as others stated the Pats have never repeatedly punted VS letting Gost try a FG.

Gost's numbers are clearly better than AVs across the board, including in 4th quarters. If AVs numbers were better that is the first place all the AV lovers would go to prove some point they are trying to make. But since AVs numbers are not as good as Gost's you get this routine tap dancing and goal post moving to try to discredit Gost and pump up AV.

Its tiring to read.

I'm a Gost fan/supporter, but my recollection is them punting on 4th on more than just one occasion. Also going for it on 4th once or twice. The yardages may have been 40-50 range and not 45, but I'm pretty sure bb hesitated more than once. Whether it was solely based on mistrust of Gost or other tactical reasons is a whole mother question

I still stand by that decision. The way the Patriots were moving the ball, you couldn’t be confident they’d get back there. Needed a touchdown either way.
