Jared Cook still hasn't official signed or agreed to commit to a deal with the Saints in principle has he? The Pats need a big vet addition and the only guy left in FA is Jared Cook. If they don't get him they have no choice but to make a trade. I wonder who they can realistically get in that case.

I'd send a second and 4th for the 2 bengals

Whoever might be available. According to Profootballtalk.com, Jared Cook has not signed with the Saints. Mike Florio posted today hours before Gronk retired that the Patriots were still involved with Cooks.

I can’t help but think there’s a connection there someplace. Sunday at 6 pm is a weird time to announce a retirement. But, it’s Gronk, so who knows.

I think the story reported by multiple outlets was that they “aggressively courted him,” prior to his decision to join the Saints, although Florio did add another story later in the evening after the Gronk announcement explaining that they could theoretically make one last push because there hadn’t been a signed contract, yet.

Either way, Peyton and Belichick are good friends, so there may be a line that Bill won’t cross. That’s a shame because they really swung and missed on some players this month.

No worries anymore, 20M in cap space we are rich...

Why hasn't Ghost been signed?

There were reports from last week that they were coming closer in their negotiations, but there were other interested teams in the hunt.

Belichick just isn’t going to stray from his value system or we wouldn’t be losing out to guys that could’ve helped the team like Humphries, Beasley, Cook, etc. He’s going to do what he’s always done and play hardball in the negotiations, and that includes longtime kicker Gostkowski, too.

That's fine, I agree but we can't continue to lose these key guys. We need Ghost. He's our #1 point scorer.

Especially when you consider the idea of it being a smaller type of pact compared to many others, but Bill is going to be stubborn so we have to just trust the process and hope that he’s signed soon.

Just seen that the Pats have restructured Bennett's two year deal to give him more guaranteed money all so that they can clear $700k in cap space this season. Seems like a big commitment for such a small cap space. I'm sure someone more clued up can explain and will no doubt say it's a great deal.

Probably more about making him happy.

He said he wanted a raise just hours before he was traded here. There's the raise. Now we have a near-definite 2 years of Bennett (if we want him) for less than the price of 1 year of Flowers.

I don't think there is much to read into.

Bennett made it plain he wanted more money and I'm sure the NEP knew that before they traded for him. This is their way of accommodating his ask and keeping a happy shop. Its clear they think he'll perform at a high-level in 2019 and has a good shot to again in 2020 (with the added incentives).

If he falls off a little next year they can still cut him/lower his deal with very little dead cap $.

If it keeps the player happy then such a small increase is worth it. I'd also like them* to give Edelman another million for this year just cause he deserves it.

I don’t think it’s a big commitment at all.
If they only gain 700k in cap space then they only push 700k to next year.

It’s a better deal than signing Trey Flowers long term. He’s a good player, but that contract he got was just horrendous. Bennet, who Flowers’ playing style has been compared to, is the better version of Trey Flowers - just older.

Some on this board drastically overrate Flowers and think the D line is doomed without him. The trade for Bennett was a brilliant move by BB and he will do the exact same things Flowers did.

And others on the board feel as long as the Pats have BB and Brady, they can overcome any loss. Flowers will be the next casualty on that list.

No one's stopping you.
