oh great another Pats SB "tainted" talking point

So isn't this all a moot point anyway? The new replay rule is only during the final two minutes of halves, right? I just checked and the Gilmore/Cooks play happened at 4:25 left in the fourth quarter.

Nevermind, they were talking about only doing this for the last two minutes of halves, the new rule covers the entire game.

Hmmm. Does Gilmore actually get a hand on Cooks? It looks like Gilmore tried to commit PI, but neither he nor Harmon actually touched Cooks until the ball bounces off of Cook's hand. How exactly is that PI? I don't think Gilmore pins Cook's arm. He holds his arm awkwardly because of the way the ball is coming in

Here are some stills from a different thread where we discussed exactly the same thing:

Gilmore let Cooks get his arm up just enough not to be called.

And at this point it really was on Cooks not being able to secure the ball with 1.5 hands before the Harmontrain came crashing into him.

Do we really want this to become PI every time ?

He clearly has his hand on Cooks left arm and makes it more challenging to catch with both hands. That being said -- and the still of Dorsett being able to overcome it against the Chiefs is a great point -- this is not something I would consider PI worthy even though it might be according to the exact wording of the rule.

Cooks was not impeded in his route, he had 1.5 hands to secure the ball that was in his grasp already but could not do in time before Harmon knocked him over.

I don’t think it was PI on that play, but that’s why I am totally against reviewing non calls and PI calls for that matter. The refs may end up finding some obscure reason or excuse to reverse the call and then that team will feel screwed like the Saints.

Imagine if the Rams challenged that and it was overturned to a call of PI. Pats fans would be perturbed and rightfully so.

It was a questionable no call but there are always a lot of close/questionable calls and no calls. This shouldn't be one that is highlighted.

But who gives a turd, no one is going to care about this in a few hours.

The play before Gilmore's interception.

It was nice to be on the other side of Cooks blowing a Super Bowl. He was dropping that pass regardless of whether or not Harmon hit him.

Thanks I was looking for something in the EZ or goal line. So at best, the 6? Not the one yard line.

I'm glad Harmon decided to finish a play at the end of a Super Bowl this year.

Is the late play the one JMc breaks up? Here's the play:

JMc doesn't touch cooks until the ball is in his hands.

Edit: maybe I've posted the wrong play per OP

Double edit: video still fun to watch.

Cant throw a flag in final 2 minutes. Booth generated review

Right. I meant penalty flag, not challenge flag.

But I think I'm not fully understanding the new rule - can it only overturn penalty that was called on the field (i.e. annual a penalty)? Or can it change a NON penalty into a penalty?

Every time they implement a rule to counter the Patriots, BB uses that rule to make the Pats better. You'd think the competition would have figured that out by now.

Not really, because Saints would have had a booth review for the non call. Saints runs the clock out. Saints wins the game. This play never happens.

Here’s the problem, the refs had a code between them, and decided to ref that game letting the players play and making the game physical.

Watching live in a big screen I thought it was a bit of PI, they make those calls during regular season all the time. But in that game, Gilmore used that resource based on the way the refs were doing their jobs. Sometimes they let them play, sometimes they call everything. It’s like a umpire that defines his strikezone and the players get conditioned to that when they decide to go for a swing or not, or the ball location for pitchers.

You can’t take that element out of the game. Then with these reviews some idiot from NY will have his own optics about the play, sitting in an office with AC not feeling the game like the field refs. Thats BS.

I agree. The play where Gilmore grabbed Cooks's arm in the EZ should have been called PI. I said it when it happened during the game, and in one of the post-game threads said that I thought it was PI but was also a good example of how a crafty vet knows how to get away with things when he can tell players' bodies are screening the refs.

So I can't get worked up over the NFL saying it should have been called.

This is what terrifies me about this new review rule.

Do you realize any sort of contact down the field will get reviewed now?? This will be a disaster, and everyone will hate it after a few weeks.

correct me if I'm wrong, but they are only reviewable via Coach's challenge, right?

So if people continue to complain, will the NFL eventually strip the Patriots of their titles?

The most disciplined defensive team will fare better than the rest under this rule. The Pats will ramp up the discipline and still dominate to the rage of the rest of the NFL again.

Right. I meant penalty flag, not challenge flag.

But I think I'm not fully understanding the new rule - can it only overturn penalty that was called on the field (i.e. annual a penalty)? Or can it change a NON penalty into a penalty?

I dont think those details are out yet

I was rooting for the Patriots to win on a really egregious call. It’s about maximum misery for the 31. I’m glad we can at least rub some salt on the wounds, even though it would have been better to see a total hose job, like the Saints-Rams, with all the haters kicking and screaming.
