So if understand the onside kick rule alternative correctly:

If a team is down by, say, 9 points and score a TD with 10 second left...

...they cut the score to 2 points....

...and then get the ball back to setup a 30 yard PI call and GW field goal.

Any time a team is down two possessions and scores in the waning seconds they get a free Hail Mary?

Awesome.
Good point. Down by 13 you score with 30 seconds left you get a Miami play chance.

why stop here, may as well add false start, roughing the passer, offside, encroachment, blow to the head, review everything.

Ya that's a problem, as is this

The kicking team must notify the referee of its intention to forego a kickoff or safety kick for one offensive play. The referee will then notify the team that would otherwise be receiving the kickoff or safety kick.

So a team is backed up inside their own 15 and down by 1-5 points with under 2 minutes to play. They take a safety and go down 3-7 points and then elect 4th & 15 and convert and now are at midfield driving to win or tie.

So you're gonna tell me the offense gets to trade 2 points and instead of it being say 4th & 10, it's 4th & 15 to move up 20-30 yards of better field position on the 4th down?
And yes I get the it's a low percentage play and "defense should make a stop" but they just did to force them into. Seems a tad bit unfair to the opposing defense

That's a hilarious scenario. You're down by one with less than 2 minutes left, get pinned by a good punt and start at the five. Throw three incomplete passes. Get an intentional safety on 4th and 10 and gain 30 yards in exchange for 2 points and only 5 extra yards to go! That puts you in range for a Hail Mary if you have a strong armed QB.

Why not have it be 4th and 1 to the other team from the same spot? Make the kickoff forgoing team earn the ball back.

This is such a joke of a rule.

Sounds like more discussion on the reviews coming...

Here's Vincent's version: "In all of our discussions, there has been a real reluctance of [giving replay authority to call penalties]. That is something that from active players, to coaches, all across from football personnel, there has been a real reluctance for." Who is reluctant and why?

Apparently everyone. Because it is a horrible idea.

As the most obvious example. It is often said that there is offensive holding and every play. So you would essentially have to have the review ignore certain penalties, unless "egregious".

Or perhaps from a more Patriots-esque example: "After review, the receiver[Gronk] committed OPI. The TD is reversed, 10 yard penalty".

And on another level if you polled fans how many do you think would say the NFL needs more penalties?

In my totally unbiased opinion, those were all great blocks except the one against McCourty.
I thought the McCourty block was good too, what was wrong with it?

How many do you think would say it doesn't need the obvious ones ignored or that the goal isn't to get it right? The obvious terrible idea is to continue ignoring what we are seeing at home. Dialogue is created when an idea is discussed not when it's run roughshod over in the dismissive way the league so routinely does. For me it's largely a matter of faith, as in was it largely discussed in good faith? The league office so consistently arriving at it's desired foregone conclusions, I have zero faith it was.

Owners rejected an alternative to the onside kick, voting down the Broncos’ fourth-and-15 proposal that was endorsed by the Competition Committee, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports.

Denver’s playing proposal would have allowed a team trailing in the fourth quarter an opportunity to maintain possession of the ball after scoring. The trailing team could have opted for one chance per game to convert a fourth-and-15 play from its own 35-yard line.

One asinine proposal shot down. Many more to go.

I think if they going to have this rule, it should only be a way to retain possession. If you get 15 yards you get to keep the ball at the 30 yard line. You shouldn't be allowed to score a TD on the play or move the ball significantly downfield on a big play. The defense could protect the 15 yard line better without fear of giving up a game winning touchdown. The risk should only be to the offense.

One asinine rule change passed:

Celebration penalties may be more costly in the NFL this season, after a new rule that the league passed today.

The league announced that the owners approved a rule that “Allows teams to elect to enforce on the succeeding try or on the succeeding free kick an opponent’s personal or unsportsmanlike conduct foul committed during a touchdown.”

Teams can now choose to enforce celebration penalties on the kickoff or PAT

Not a fan because as I have stated multiple times in the past the consequence would be absurd **** like this:

Have fun with people looking in slow-motion at every little contact between a WR and DB in the future.

Unbelievable. So is the game going to be slowed down completely in at the end of the half with booth review after booth review?

And how many times has Gronk been borderline sexually assaulted on plays that go uncalled?

Of course this is the year that this ridiculous rule comes into play.
