Maybe Gostkowski and Nelson today?
Could we take a flier on Ansah on a low salary deal?
I feel we need more d Dline but that could come in the way of the draft.
Donta Hightower and Devin Mccourty could come to the renegotiating table next.

Gilmore's cap numbers:

2019: $9,670,833

2020: $18,670,833 ----- >

IF YOU CUT HIM WE WILL SAVE $3,329,167

2021: $19,670,833

IF YOU CUT HIM WE WILL SAVE $12,000,000

Yikes. That's why I don't like restructures.

Gostkowski impending?

If that’s the only move, I will be disappointed. According to Miguel, they had around 2.5 million in cap space before this Gilmore restructuring. If they needed more than that to re-sign Gost, that would be a major overpay, IMO. He doesn’t have much bargaining power, unless the bears are making a push to sign him behind the scenes. I personally hope that they bring in a rookie kicker to compete with him.

Hopefully this indicates that another deal will soon to be announced as well.

I don't hate it and i will explain why.

We don't use this ''method'' a lot.

If we use the money with wisdom it will not do any harm. If we don't use this extra money at all (Brady extension) will roll over, the only problem of doing this is spend like crazy.

He has plenty of bargaining power. Despite a few key missteps, he knows the FAs out there are a much scarier proposition for a team that intend such on contending for the big prize.

Unless there is a draft pick BB plans to take mid-rounds and trusts will keep the train rolling, Gost is the option.

That has to equate to a Gost signing today, possibly as well as one of Humber/McClellan in the near future. Aside from that, they should be good until Brady’s extension.

Don’t see much reason for any other restructures, since this should take care of immediate needs plus provide money for either a mid tier player or the rookie pool. The Brady extension will add to the surplus for in-season signings.

well, unless they plan to sign Ansah or trade for AJ Green etc

I don’t care. I can stand it.

We still need money for draft picks, players 52 and 53, Ir players, a practice squad and in season pick ups.
This isn’t extra money to spend it’s one step toward getting out of cap poverty.

Gilmore's cap numbers:

so we'll likely cut him in 2021 unless he is Champ Bailey and plays at an extremely high level at 30 years old and we give him an extension to reduce the 2021 caphit. There might be a lockout that year anyway lol

I understand that they eventually needed more than 2.5 million in cap space, but the draft is not for another five weeks. Is there some salary cap compliance deadline prior to the draft of which I am not aware?

I don't think this move is soley because of Ghost

Money for draft picks, sure. But you don’t need to worry about players 52, 53, IR and mid season pickups until September. No need to rush that decision now if you don’t need to; it just might work itself out naturally (i.e. someone like Guy, Pennel, Burkhead, etc. looking like crap in preseason and being outplayed by a rookie) or it might now. Clearly more space will be needed then. But if you don’t absolutely need the space right now, no need to box yourself into a decision now.

I don't think we will cut him.

I think we will extend him.

2021 is probably Brady's last season and they will have a LOT of money in 2022 and he will play for the same number in 2020.

Boston.com had a good write up about the salary cap situation for the patriots. In it, they broke down the top 51. The first number is their salary this year and the second number is their cap hit.

The top 51 rule states that from the beginning of the League Year (March) until the day before the first regular season game, only the highest 51 highest P5 (“Paragraph 5” of a standard NFL contract, which is typically the player’s yearly base salary) player contracts amounts will be included and counted against a team’s Salary Cap. Each team must be under the Salary Cap by the first regular season game !!!!!!!!!

Bingo. I think unless an opportunity presents itself to spend via a value trade or to save money via a favorable extension (DMac ? KVN ?) we should in the usual spot once we enter the season with around 8-10m of space.

Brady's extension + this Gilmore restructure is exactly that. Add in a potential Shaq Mason restructure if something else comes up.

As the person who updates the BSJ cap pages I will just say I have never been six contracts behind.

Why do the 2019 Patriots have so little cap space? | Boston Sports Journal

On that day, this (and the BSJ cap page) was by far the best available information, and always is.
My problem was that I need to sift through posts to find the latest information, since most of the information is in tweets (and don't use Twitter). I understand that this is my "personal" issue that doesn't affect others.

1) There is zero reason to do extensions now. Extensions require negotiations.

2) Money will be needed during and after camp; $10M is a reasonable number. So, even if we KNEW how much a Brady extension might bring, even then it would be reasonable to wait. As an aside, I believe that there is lots of elf overestimating what that number will be.
$12M cannot be moved. The cap primarily depends on the bonus, which SHOULD be significant.

3) There are about $20M of restructures that can be done. If we go beyond that need, perhaps we might NEED to do extensions. I'm not against extensions, but no needn't be the time. There is lots of other personnel issues to deal with (re-singings, free agents, trades and the draft).

AS AN ASIDE, a Gilmore restructure was announced this morning freeing up $5.7M of cap space. The team is negotiating with Gostkowski and apparently also wants the freedom to deal with others.

.

The reason why nothing has happened can be that. But it can also be a lack of a reason to do it right now. If you don't do anything with the space right now what is the point of having it ? It is not like they are gonna pay any bills until offseason workout bonuses start getting hit / drafted players sign a contract.

You don't like restructures because you believe that a player's cap hit is relevant to decision-making.
