Patriots Tender Jonathan Jones and Josh Gordon

Seems pretty standard/expected. Is the difference in tender amounts due to their positions? Like, does it work like the franchise tag in that way?

Also, does Gordon count against the cap while he's suspended, or does that only kick in if/when he's reinstated?

You get back cap space but only after the regular season begins.

Fat Patricia is a glutton for Patriots though.

Jones would have been a better deal than Coleman but we already have Detroits Third Rounder.

Pats have Big plans for Flash Gordon atleast for this year. Hopefully they Draft a young guy in his mold athletically so he can help that players development.

He is gone in a year anyway.
Seems BB largely runs this team one year at a time anyway, and almost never pays market rate.

Pats fans should know to not expect much during the "legal tampering" / "pre-agency" / "free agency" period.

That's for teams who have to overpay to find talent (see: Detroit, Miami, da Jetes, etc).

Are the Pats allowed to do this as a placeholder, while they negotiate a longer term deal with him? I could see them trying to tempt him this year with a 4 year deal, while he's still reasonably cheap.

Why would he do that ? It is the Butler situation all over again.

The Pats will offer him an extension at a lower APY because they will count this RFA-tendered year into the overall deal. Looking at the deals that players like Coleman are getting on the market right now he will reject that extension and will prefer to hit FA next year.

Of course if he somehow feels generous and takes the cheaper deal here like David Andrews or Shaq Mason did then amazing. But odds are that he will go the same path as many before and prefer to hit the market. The injury risk that many bring up is a red herring because he can get reasonably priced insurance. Mayo talked through all this multiple times 2 years ago when we had the Butler offseason debacle unfold.

Point being I'd rather have someone take him off our hands and return a second round pick than us getting (maybe) a 4th round pick in 2 years. With Brady and the rest of the team being where they are that additional second round pick would be pretty nice. And with Dawson, JCJ and Crossen there is some young depth on the roster.

Big plans? They are about as solid as lake ice in April.

I am rooting so much for him.
He can be so special and if he proves himself the Patriots can keep him and I'm sure he will give them a discount.
I'm really rooting for him he's dynamic and I loved watching him since the first time I've seen him play.

Already missed 2 and the entire playoffs - 6?

Anyone have an educated guess on how many games Josh Gordon will miss to start the season?

More than likely
At some point we will spend money to keep our own.
Jonathan Jones is a steal at 3 Mill absolute steal.
I could still see a scenario where we do a long term deal with him in the 7 Mill a year range.
7 mill is more than double the average cap hit you can have on your 53. Jones pkayed 49% of the snaps last year and 41 the year before.
20 players played more 24 played 40% or more.
Seems like 3-5 is more in line with his role. IMO.

Jones isn't all that great. Solid role player but BB will find comparable UDFA.

Getting a 2nd round pick for him would be beyond terrific.

I've been waiting for this to happen. Jones' tender was something we all were expecting. The raise he got is well deserved. I'm not worried about someone trying to grab him. A second rounder is too high a hurdle for other teams to come and grab him, imo. For THIS system he is a perfect plug and play guy to play a specific weekly role. THAT is the value he brings to the defense.

Gordon's tag, on the other hand was a surprise to me. I figured why bother to tag a guy who is "indefinitely" suspended and a pariah to most of the league. Clearly IF he was to come back at some point, the Pats were about the only safe haven available to him. Yet they tendered him anyway. Why was that, since it took another $2MM off our very limited (at this point) cap space.

If I have to speculate, (and why not everyone else does ;) ).

1. They have strong indications that Gordon will be reinstated for this season.

2. He is currently working out hard and is in shape or in the process of getting in shape for THIS season.

3. The Pats FO expect Josh Gordon to be a productive WR THIS season....for the Pats.

Remember, Gordon was on a very restrictive probation. One drink, One joint would sink him....and it obviously did. The fact is we DON'T know exactly what happened, and based on him getting a tender, I'm thinking it wasn't a horrendous slip up. The NFL is currently rethinking its policy on weed....and they should. That is another factor in Josh's potential return.

At any rate, before today, most of us figured that Josh Gordon's return was very unlikely. After this tagging, maybe most of us were wrong. ;)

While I don't want to overpay for Jones I'd rather they lock him up long term. You can never have enough CBs in this league. Yes our depth looks great now but all it takes is an injury or two and that complexion changes rapidly. Also you're going to be looking at both McCorty's, assuming Jason returns, and Chung all being turned over in the next 2-3 years so the stability would help.

Overall I agree and think he's probably played his way out of town. Just saying don't discount what he brings so quickly.

The problem is you can't expend all your resources at one position, especially if you project that JC Jackson is a stud that you will keep. Gilmore + Jackson probably means you'll be filling in with with rookies, 2nd year guys like Duke Dawson, and older vets like McCourty and Rowe.

I agree you cannot offer him the contract Justin Coleman just got but Bill has always done a great job of managing that middle tier of the roster. So if he can extend Jones now before his RFA walk year at 4-ish/year you do it. Van Noy and White both took deals to stay here for less than 5M. That middle tier depth is very underrated in terms of how the Patriots keep rolling even when the injury start taking their toll.

If he plays one year on his tender here's to him have a monster year that nets him a contract which gets us another 3rd round comp pick because I agree you can't break the bank on everybody.

That Tender made me breathe sigh of relief at WR. Edelman and Gordon could carry this Team minus Gronk.
