Patriots Trade for Michael Bennett

Forgive my ignorance, but has anyone definitely confirmed that Schiano is going to be the DC? I know that we’re all constantly discussing it, but is there a possibility that he’ll just be a mid-level assistant for the first year?

If that’s the case, he may not be in a position where Bennett’s opinion matters as much. Just a thought. I guess I’m wondering if he could take over Bilema’s job or something like that? Maybe Bilema is the de facto DC? I dunno. I just don’t know if I have seen it confirmed, yet.

Meet new Patriots defensive coordinator Greg Schiano | Boston.com

This article in the Globe on February seemd to be pretty definitive about Schiano being named as DC. Could they be wrong, it seems low probability. It has not been officially confirmed by Pats, but in the past they have waited until after the draft to confirm coaching changes

It seems that Schiano has a lot of guys who were not in love with his coaching style. I have seen quotes even from Mccourty and Bosa about his super intensity. I do not think he was well liked among the players.
I trust BB, but I hope this hiring does not backfire.
Seemed like Flores was universally liked and respected. I remember when Schiano was HC of the Bucaneers, he seemed like kind of a tool. Remember when he had his defense try to maul the oppposing teams center on the last play of the game when the QB was taking a knee?

I hope when BB ask Michel Bennett to restructure or take a pay cut... he asked him in front of Schiano and a locked fortified door. :D Somebody gotta take one for the Team I nominate Schiano. :D

IMO it is related to Clayborn, he was good but we could upgrade. If he(Clayborn) is cut it really is 3m dollars for a better overall player.

I would love to keep both. Rotation is key, but let's see how much cap Brady extension will save and others.

Flowers* (Bennett/Draft pick) Bennett (Draf Pick) Guy (Butler) Clayborn(Wise)

KVN / HT /Bentley (draft pick)

Gilmore - JC Jackson -Jason McCourty* - Dawson/JJ - DMcCourty -Chung - Harmon (draft pick)

That is good as 2002/2003 D

That front 7 is definitely not as good as 2003. Bentley, Guy and Clayborn wouldn’t start on the 2003 team. Neither would Wise if you’re including him as a starter. As well as Van Noy played last year, would anyone actually take him over one of the 2003 LB (Vrabel, McGinest, Phifer, Bruschi)?? Phifer was the weakest of that unit but he was great in 2003 and easily as good as Van Noy last year (in a different type of role so it’s not a great comparison)

People seem to be forgetting how good those players were. Ted Washington had a dominant year in 2003. As did Seymour. The LB group played as well as we’ve ever seen a Pats unit play.

I agree with most of what you said except the KVN/Phifer part. KVN was our 3rd best defensive player this year and while Phifer was great at his role he was a role player and probably not even one of the top 11 on that D.

Agree based on the comparisons but Bennett coupled and Flowers with either Clayborn or a year 3 Wise would be a pretty sick D-Line pressure coming from everywhere.

The same folks who saw Bennett for the low character person that he was while he was on other teams now have no problem with him being part of the Patriot Way.

Oh how I miss the days when character mattered.

Outside of lip service being paid, when has character mattered in the NFL?

Bennett is a good player, seems like an azxhole person...if this is a replacement for Trey flowers I don't like it one bit....
you rather have a rookie or Wise replacing Flowers?

Bill knew about this before he acquired him. It was part of the reason Philly was gonna cut him. I'm sure there is a plan in place.

At minimum, I would expect some incentives, probably as part of a new contract.

I suspect that Flowers is an independent issue.

Whether or now Flowers is staying, I think that Bennett is good addition. As of now, we have Bennett, Clayborn, Wise and Rivers.

I would hope to re-sign Simon.

We would then have Bennett, Clayborn, Simon, Wise and a draftee from the first 3 rounds.

Obviously, we could re-sign Flowers as an upgrade to Clayborn. Or, we could sign or trade for someone else as an upgrade.

Cut Clayborn and Ebner saves 7m = Bennett
Cap is pretty much the same
Why cut Ebner? Because you can have 3 great STer for less than his cap hit (king/humber/McClellan)
Are you referring to Brandon King of the ST penalties? He isn't a "great" STer, not by a damn sight.

Uhhh has this been discussed?

Yet another reason not to have him on our team.

He was 3rd on the team in tackles in 2003 and a full time starter. That was arguably his best year in New England

Not sure what you’re talking about. Phifer racked up 99 tackles in 2003 (66 solo) which is more than Van Noy’s 92/55 solo this year

Would love to hear how a full time starter with 99 tackles is a role player and Van Noy is a full timer
