Hightower not willing to take a pay cut

Having said that : I would gladly pay HT what he is owed this year, despite what some would call a subpar season. This guy ALWAYS comes up huge in the biggest games and - apart from BB & TB - you could make a solid case that he is the player most « attached » to this second dynasty (#11 and Gronk being good considerations as well).

HT has been injured and such, but he lasted basically all season and was there when it counted in the SB. Pay him the remainder of his contract and deal with contracts when they expire in this case.

If he is still Hightower this year, which I expect, then extend him at the end of the year when he has less leverage (less dead money) on the last year of his contract.

Why would Hightower even entertain taking a pay cut right now? Yes, he was slow to get going this year but he was huge again when it counted. He was the best player on the field in the Super Bowl. He’s been huge in all 3 SB’s he’s played in. Guys like Hightower don’t come along all to often.

If we cut him tomorrow the Dolphins or Lions would be rushing to sign him. The JETS might even send him 2 dozen cupcakes instead of 1.

If High plays like he did in the playoffs a restructure is not appropriate.

The issue here is BB doesn't look at 3 games. He looks at the current state, projected performance and the associated cost/benefit of his value in the position relative to the overall unit and team.

Just said the team would love it. I agree with you. HT has delivered and THEN some. I support any business deal he desires.

Dead money is by definition irrelevant.

What is relevant is whether a player is worth what he is being paid for his future services.

If Hightower has a good year, it is Hightower would have the leverage at the end of 2019, not the patriots.

Not really. Is cutting a player means that a team is eating a tremendous amount of cap space anyway, then that team is less likely to want to pursue that option.

Playing ability and value being equal, cutting McCourty would save the Patriots over 9 million, but cutting Hightower would save them only 5.6 million.

So, if the team valued them equally, Hightower would be in a better position than McCourty.

By this logic, Clayborne is in a better position than McCourty or Hightower.

I think the McCourty is far more valuable than Hightower. But, there is no particular reason to make the comparison. Neither should be going anywhere.
