Adding A Quarterback

Ryan Mallet... those were fun times. He had a rocket arm FYI.
I remember reading about him as a kid launching the ball 50 yards and hitting someone on the head with the ball and going wow love this kid.
That's Drew Luck for me I'm in love with the long ball.

Meh....if there's good value there...take a QB...otherwise...I'm all in on the Brady era....keep giving Brady weapons or impact players on D to the end please.

I'd not touch a QB in the first 3 rounds, but come the 4th...if someone slips a bit...go for it (shrugs).

Several QB's have been drafted in later rounds in the last 2 years, I mean, QBs are always drafted but focusing on the last 2 years, maybe there is someone they liked at the time with 4th or 5th round talent that they couldn't get and didn't develop and they could take a flier?

Of the free agents, I like Teddy Bridgewater. As a backup and spot starter.

I wouldn't draft a QB high this year. I'd grab what this draft has a lot of: defensive line. We also need TE/WR help. A good coverage linebacker who can keep up with a RB on a wheel route...

What if Danny Etling is the heir apparent? Seems they are very high on him. He travelled to all the away games!

I think they might see him as the QB2 of the future. (Remember that Hoyer is guaranteed $1.5M in 2019, though.)

Way too early to say he's the QB1 of the future.

Throw in UFDA's who made the team like Hoyer and Guiterez (sp) and the Pats look like a team who are always interested in QBs despite having the stablest and best situation in NFL history at the position.

Keep in mind that for nearly a decade, the Patriots did not have a veteran backup. I think this was, in part, because they would have had to pay a significant premium for a veteran backup QB, since they had zero chance of winning the job on performance. So they had to focus on finding QBs on the draft. And of the three they've had since 2004, Hoyer was a former rookie backup, while Flutie and Testaverde were brought in primarily to mentor Cassel.

Jon Gruden has gushed over Tre Flowers for years. Gruden is a lousy coach and GM. Belichick robs him by trading Flowers for the Raiders 2021 first round pick. In the fall of 2021, the Patriots select the next great QB Trevor Lawrence.

Just thought I'd share my fantasies with you all as I lie awake in the middle of the night.

Interesting that the best QB of the bunch - besides Brady - was the quarterback chosen with the highest draft choice - Garoppolo.

I know not many people expect this scenario to happen but it would be really interesting to see who BB would target for a 1st round QB over the next couple of years.

If there is good value, he fits in our system and the Pats rate him highly, would take a QB anywhere in the draft...

OTOH we really do not know what we have in Danny Ettling, he was redshirted last season and had plenty of time to figure the NFL and the way the Pats do business.. there were some reports he was working hard on becoming an NFL QB, stay tuned we will know more come TC... Ettling has played one complete preseason game and parts of two others.. hardly enough evidence to make any decision regarding his future..

If you look at Jimmy Garoppolo he had some of the features that Brady has. Gets the ball out quick, makes quick easy throws and is smart. Those are hugely important for a QB in this system.

There’s no QBs in this years draft that I want for us. We have to many average players that we need to upgrade and add more youthful talent.

If we’re going QB it will be the later rounds or the UDFA route, I can see them looking at QBs for next years draft and 2021 classes where the talent is better than this years.

I say just use Etling. How hard is it to replace a hospital ball tossing, system quarterback?
According to sports radio, anyone can replace brady and it won’t matter so long as he can toss it five yards

The Hammer is a FA who always thought he's better than Hoyer.

It's simply about opportunity for me. If the opportunity presents itself to find Brady's successor in the draft this year, you do it. If it doesn't you wait another year and try again. The need becomes more urgent next year though. If you truly want to continue the dynasty, any QB we pick will need a year of seasoning.

This assumes that a) the Pats have a franchise potential grade on a QB this year, and b) that QB becomes either available to you or within reasonable reach in the draft.

Agree. They probably had some useful insight to share with 2005/2006 version of Tommy as well.

Both were 43 during their stints in New England. I always got a sense that they were partly on the team for BB's sense of football heritage and history to have the old timers with their history. Especially doing things like the drop kick or when he had them play each other when Vinny was still an old man on the Jets.

Brady is at such an advanced age that when the end does come it could be sudden and put the team in a precarious position. That may lead to them going for a reliable FA instead of a draft pick.

That’s a better idea. Rookies and even like Goff seem like deer in the headlights against a playoff defense
