Some would simply wait until Brady and/or Hoyer retire and replace them after the fact, with no planning or preparation other than late draft choices.
==========
I would add a quarterback each year who projects to be able to replace Hoyer in 2020, not as a long shot, but as a reasonable projection.

So, I would use one of our top 7 draft choices to draft a quarterback or trade for a quarterback. I would expect to carry this quarterback on the 53. Sure, Belichick COULD already think that he has this player in Etling, but that seems unlikely.

We would then have used ONE draft choice on a potential future quarterback on the patriots.
=======
Next year, I would again used one of our top draft choices (Round 1-4) to draft or trade for a quarterback. This quarterback would be expected to compete with the 2019 rookie to replace Hoyer.

Going into 2021, we would have 2 young quarterbacks being trained up. When Brady retires, hopefully one of these quarterbacks would be able to start. Belichick could then assess whether to acquire another quarterback. Hopefully, Brady would be still be starting in 2021, being backed up by a 2019 QB and a 2020 QB. We would then be reasonably prepared for 2022.
=====
BOTTOM LINE

Using one draft choice a year is not too much resources to use as insurance for two important positions (#1 and #2 quarterback).

This presumes that Belichick wants to remain competitive instead of the dump the season strategy some here have suggested, when Brady chooses to retire.

You don’t just say I’m going to use a pick within x rounds without knowing what players are available.
If a QB is the best move with the pick that’d what we do. If that doesn’t occur then we do what we did last year and take one with a low value pick to have one to work with.

I agree.

If there is no acceptable quarterback available at a reasonable cost in any of the first 4 rounds, and no acceptable quarterback available for trade at reasonable value, then Belichick shouldn't and is unlikely to act, although he could always take a flyer on a late rounder or UDFA (after all we need a PS and camp backup).

But that is the opposite of your op. You literally said he should take one in the first 7 picks.

What if Danny Etling is the heir apparent? Seems they are very high on him. He travelled to all the away games!

Would love to see how Danny Etling looks this Off season and TC. But would still like them to Draft a Rookie who they think fits win win either way. Need to get Hoyer:rolleyes: off this Roster.

Yes, I indeed meant that I think that we should take a QB with one of the first 7 picks or trade one of those picks for a QB,

That is because I have great confidence that Belichick will find someone of value in the first 7 picks or someone of value to trade for, using on the those picks.

I do not. Belichick can’t wish a QB into being there and being a good value.
Look at the QBs that are being picked in rounds 2 and 3 now. How many of them were good picks in the last 4-5 years?

I know it's a small sample size, but from what I saw of Etling last year in the pre season and in scrimages, I don't want him anywhere near the field come regular season time. I think he's back up material at best.

OP you have to do better than this. You're not a fuxkin rookie like this other sh itbum sh itposting about Kraft.

It’s becoming clear that the Niners are a mess and John Lynch is in over his head. If they implode next year and turn the whole thing over, the Pats might be able to get JG on the cheap, that is if Flores or Patricia doesn’t beat them to the punch...

This is very wishful thinking
