Julian Edelman wins SB MVP

I think when future HoF selectors look back, they'd want to put some guys into the HoF from this team that got to 5 SBs and won 3 this decade. Brady makes it on his previous 3 SBs alone. Who makes it to HoF from the 2010s team.

I think Gronk is obvious. But Edelman makes a name for himself. McCourty, Hightower are others in the mix but I'd say behind Edelman.

Love me some squirrel and yeah if you had to pick the individual best performance on the field tonight it’s hard to so no to Jules. Dude was strait up uncoverable for the majority of the game. All of that said it’s hard for me to give MVP to any offensive player in a 13-3 defensive slugfest. Problem is there is no one player on D that stands out like Eldeman, they all played fantastic lights out balls to the wall insane all game long. I guess Gilmore would be my pick seeing as he got the critical INT but even that was due to a well timed double DB blitz. Either way, hell of a game D you, all of you the whole unit, the real MVP of our 6th!!! Championship.

Gilmore was a strong pick for MVP.

He came in in 2009 and was immediately crowned Wes Welker II. He was a shining light (along with Brady and Faulk) in that Ravens playoff debacle. But then he just kind of fell off the radar for a few years.

No offense to Edelman, but he went from being the second best receiving option after Moss in the BAL loss to being the sixth best option by the end of 2010 (GRONK, TE #81, Woodhead, Branch, Welker).

So the Patriots have a four-time SB MVP who was taken in the sixth round (#199) and another who was taken in the seventh (#232). I was wondering how rare it was for late-round picks to win SB MVP so looked it up. Lots of top ten picks on the list but some underdogs throughout the years:

- VII Jake Scott, Dolphins, 7th round (#159)
- XX, Richard Dent, Bears, 8th round (#203)
- XXX, Larry Brown, Cowboys, 12th (#320)
- XXXIV, Kurt Warner, Rams, undrafted
- XLVIII, Malcolm Smith, Seahawks, 7th (#242)

I get why people want to give the MVP to Gilmore or Hightower. Personally, I thought the D-line was even better than Gilmore. Hightower's pass rush maybe deserved it. BUT, I do think much of this success was due to Goff's ineptitude. He doesn't know what to do against zones. He drops way back. Deer in the headlights. I don't want to take anything away from Gilmore's play BUT--if I were told that any of the Patriots would miss the Super Bowl before it was played even, I would say first, "I hope it's not Brady." My second? Edelman. I don't know who of the Patriots receivers could do anything out there other than maybe Gronk, but Gronk is limited. In other words, the Patriots don't hold onto the ball, T.O.P., without Edelman. He was otherworldly out there. He put the DBs on skates with his nifty cat-like moves, he was like Kemba Walker doing a step back out there. I get why Edelman's short passes that he turns into 15 yard gains aren't sexy compared to the work of the D. BUT--did you see his moves? He has an incredible skill in his arsenal. I think he's unguardable. Without him, the Patriots are a popgun offense. Losing Gilmore would hurt badly, but I sit Gilmore before Edelman. Edelman played lights out, and he is more valuable. Say JC Jackson replaces Gilmore against Brandin Cooks and he gives up 2 big pass plays for 60 yards. Say that gives the Rams an extra TD. So the final score is 13-10. BUT--how much do the Patriots score without Edelman?

Edelman is my MVP.

Without Edelman, the Pats would have been punting from their 10 and 15 several times. Give the Rams those short fields and very likely they would have gotten the lead and changed the game greatly. In some ways Edelman was our best defensive player last night.

I think the difference is there were a lot of good defensive players, whereas after Edelman you had gronk and then literally nothing as far as receiving went.

Another factor is how the MVP is chosen.
The Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award, or Super Bowl MVP, is presented annually to the most valuable player of the Super Bowl, the National Football League's (NFL) championship game. The winner is chosen by a fan vote during the game and by a panel of 16 football writers and broadcasters who vote after the game.

Gilmore's big play came at the end. A lot of fans might have voted before then. And fans are probably more likely to notice offensive players to begin with, especially one who is getting talked up the entire game for his performance.

I guess this puts to rest the debate over who's the best slot guy the Pats have ever had.
1. Edelman
2. Brown
3. Welker

Apparently after the game Ndamukong Suh said something along the lines of Edelman got his yards, but the Rams “eliminated him.” Uhhhh what? If 10 catches for 140+ yards and a SB MVP is considered being eliminated , what do they consider a good receiving performance?! Guess the rationale is that points weren’t scored often so that’s what they’re hanging their hat on. But he constantly converted first downs and that tired out their D by the end. Little bit delusional.

After I wrote this I realized another poster already talked about this. Oops my mistake
