TNF: Chiefs LOSE LOL

No it isn't. The rule reads
  1. "Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs)."
The Patriots won the head-to-head matchup with both the Chiefs and the Texans. It is correct that the Chargers could win out and get the #1 seed if the Chiefs lose again. If they wind up tied one is the wild card and one is the division champ and gets the bye.

Right now, the seeding is Chiefs, Patriots, Houston, Pittsburgh, Chargers, Ravens

2018-19 NFL Playoff Picture

Whatever happens, the Patriots control their destiny and get a bye if they win out. Houston cannot jump the Patriots if they both win out...

"
TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM OR AMONG DIVISION WINNERS:
If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

  1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
  2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.
Three or More Clubs:
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after one or more clubs are eliminated during any step, tie-breaker re-starts at Step One of two-club format. If three clubs remain tied after a fourth club is eliminated during any step, tie-breaker re-starts at Step One of three-club format.)

  1. Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.
  2. Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
  5. Strength of victory.
  6. Strength of schedule.
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
  9. Best net points in conference games.
  10. Best net points in all games.
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  12. Coin toss"
Pats win out
Texans win out
Chiefs win against Seahawks, loose against Oakland
Chargers loose against Ravens, win at Denver

All teams are 12-4, but LA wins the AFC West. So you need to apply the tiebreaker rules above. Point 2: Only head-to-head sweep counts. Not applicable here. If you apply the other tie breakers, Houston will be 1, LAC 2, Pats 3. Sad but true.

Well, Pats aren't winning one there this postseason, that's for sure.

Regards,
Chris

Post season is a whole different game. I did not think the would win the game in 2006 and they did it. I may DOUBT they will win, but I will NEVER count this team out and say they WON'T win.

It means that, as long as the Patriots beat the Dolphins, they'll take over the #1 seed

Umm... err... Nevermind.

Still have to beat the Squeelies and we all know how difficult that is. Oh wait, Mean Joe Greene retired......I stand corrected.

I will spell it out for you: They absolutely won't win in San Diego, because San Diego does not have an NFL team.

Is the general tenor here that most Pats fans hate the Chiefs, or just rooting for them to lose for purely strategic reasons? Their message board has a bunch of hooligans, they have some shady players (Hill, formerly Hunt), but other than that I don’t get the hate. I just see them as so much less hateable than teams like the Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Broncos, Chargers, Jets, Dolphins and a slew of AFC contenders, or even a bunch of NFC teams. If the Patriots don’t win, I’d like to see Andy Reid get the trophy. By far the least appreciated coach in the NFL and is worthy of having his name on the champions list. They also made a brilliant move in recognizing Mahomes talent and trading up for him.

@QuantumMechanic I don’t mind that hit the disagree button on my post. I would like to hear why you disagree though. There’s enough there that just hitting the button doesn’t give any indication of what you disagree about specifically.

The Chiefs, with HFA, are going to be almost impossible for anyone to beat.

You have to hope Mahomes makes some unforced errors and they fumble a couple times. Their offense is just too good and too consistent

Wrong again.

The patriots don’t lose a common games tie breaker to the chargers.

I dont know. Thats what the ESPN Playoff machine says in this scenario:
  • 1st Seed - Houston
    AFC South Champ
Wins tie break over Los Angeles based on strength of victory. Wins tie break over New England based on best win percentage in common games (minimum of four).
  • 2nd Seed - Los Angeles
AFC West Champ (Wins tie break over Kansas City based on best win percentage in common games.)
Wins tie break over New England based on best win percentage in common games.
So I guess New Englands win over Houston tie breaker doesnt count, as there was no game between Pats-Chargers and Texans-Chargers?
I don’t think the patriots lose the common games tiebreaker to the chargers. Each have 1 common game loss.

ESPN is goofed up because as of today the chargers have played 1 more common game.

I’m really not impressed by this AFC field. I like NOLA, Chicago, and Dallas more than any AFC team.

I'm sure the Saints will be a tough game but Chicago lost to the Pats on their own field and Dallas lost to Houston on the road and Tennessee at home. The NFC also has a 24-28 head to head record vs the AFC right now.

I dont think I have ever seen a QB or team in general waste more clock time getting a play off than Rivers the Chargers. Seems like every play goes right to the wire, maybe rivers just cant figure it out faster...

You must have forgotten about the Donovan McNabb SB vs the Pats. That's the worst I've ever seen by far. I think he was coughing up fur balls in the huddle as the game slipped away (thankfully).

Yeah, but the Pats have never won a playoff game in San Diego have they....

:p

Well, Pats aren't winning one there this postseason, that's for sure.

Regards,
Chris
Especially the way that Hunter Henry has played all season...I mean if Derrick Johnson & the Chiefs couldn't stop him, then what chance do we have?

It was a ballsy call, that’s for sure. Not sure I’d have the guts for that when the division and potential #1 seed are on the line.

Lucky for HC Anthony Lynn, the play worked out, or people would be talking about it for a long, long time.

I think we'll be talking about that for a long time anyway. The way KC was moving the ball it was worth a chance.

Btw, I remember the Pats being in that situation in 2002 when KC was running through us like nothing and scored at the end of the game and decided to kick the extra point and take their chances in OT. I was scared sh!tles that they were going to go for two and the win instead, but they didn't. The Pats won the toss and went down for the winning FG instead. I was thinking about that game last night.

I should say I THINK before that post cuz I’m not sure.

Chargers fans are charmin soft, the polar opposite to Raider fans. I would love to drive up to LA and make this a home game west for the Pats.

Pretty incredible this is a feasible scenario.

Fuller's injury makes it more likely that the Seahawks can be of help.

Jackson would have to grow up quickly in order for that to happen, but their defense should be able to harass Mahomes from the opening whistle.

Flacco wouldn't be back by then? Even Captain Checkdown should shred that defense.
