No “Yeah Buts” Patriots Defense Is Coming Together Right On Time

Steve Balestrieri

And don’t look now, but that “trash” defense of the Patriots' They’re currently tied with Seattle for 9th best in points allowed with 21.6.

The pass rush is still dreadful without blitzing which puts a huge strain on the secondary. Wise and Clayborn are pretty much invisible. Flowers is the only guy who seems to get pressure somewhat reliably

I'd love a killer pass rush, but we are getting pressure and moving the opposing QB out of the pocket...which is a good thing.

It really looks like the pressure is due to our secondary playing so well, because it’s taking time for our front to get to the quarterback.

Great article Steve!

Couldn't help but smile when I saw the list of "Things you can set your watch/calendar by". Good one. :)

I should admit that during the game, I do yell and scream - especially in the first half - when I don't see the dominance with which I want us to decimate the opponent. That's the spoiled - read extremely spoiled - fan who has been hoping that the Pats go 19-0 to avenge for that SB loss. :D

Thanks for the column!

Go Pats!!

Still a bit skeptical. We saw them do this last year, and then the defense got torched in the SB. So not getting too excited.

I do feel that talent wise, this defense is better than last year's. Having Hightower back helps, the secondary is better with Jason McCourty and JC Jackson added. Having Jonathon Jones back, though he's struggled at times, makes our secondary better. The pass rush is non existent, but it pretty much was last year too. I think Flores likes to blitz more, so that puts more pressure on the QB.

Overall, if they continue to play like they did against Minnesota, then I will start drinking the koolaid.

They are playing pretty damn good. 4 out of the last 5 games now holding opponent to 17 pts or less
