Thoughts on Sony Michel

Curtis Martin was one of my favorite players. How dope was it that he was one of only player wearing elbow pads? Terry Allen wore them in '99. It just looked so 90's and cool. I was absolutely pissed he went to the Jets. However, it was a sacrifice that needed to happen. Had he stayed, I think the Pats do well enough that Carroll survives a few years and BB ends up elsewhere.
KFaulk had elbow pads

As of right now, Stevan Ridley was better. And it's not even close. He was a very decisive-quick runner with good power. A lot of people on this board seem to either forget or don't care he had the best season since Corey Dillon's '04 season. He had 1,264 yards with a 4.4 average and 12 TD's. He had 7 100 yard games during his time in NE. He would've had more good years had he not had that collision with Bernand Pollard in the AFCCG. He then had another collusion against the Bills on opening day the following year where he fumbled and it was returned for a TD. He was never the same after that but still had 773 yards rushing and 7 TD's his second year starting.

Overall, he was fantastic value pick in the 3rd round.
Its closer that you think

Exactly you people who dissagree are full of it:rolleyes: may be Sony is not 100% yet but up until last week none of us saw that second gear he showed in College. Chubb has a 92 yard run already you have to have a second gear to do that on this level nuff said!

I think we've seen that gear briefly when he had got his first starts, we just didn't see it manifest into a 92 yard TD run but that doesn't mean he doesnt have that gear

Michel will most likely surpass Ridley, but he’s not there yet. It’s an insult to what Ridley provided his first season starting. He injected some needed juice in the running game.

Well, 64 total passes for 621 yards is not that bad. A lot of college running backs never reach 500 yards receiving. Conner, for example, since I know you like him. :)

Sure. But Michel was never close Barkley or White level catching passes in college, and yet many folks seem to have been expecting Michel to perform as if he was in that class.

WRT Conner, yes I saw him as a potential younger version of Blount (also not a great receiver). His breakout as a receiver was completely unexpected, by me at least.

The Riddler it hurt to see him on the Jets and Steelers.

Are there better highlights to watch than these?

Goddamn I feel old.

If you didn't see Martin play in real time and relative to the other players on the field a youtube video just isn't gonna capture that.

I think you might be slightly biased against Michel

I'm not someone who roots against our players. I also don't overly romanticize the past. A lot of the players from the 80s and 90s who were stars wouldn't make a starting lineup these days.

Relative to the players of his day Martin was special in a way that more than Sony's stats can capture. I'd love if Michel became the greatest RB of all time, but I gotta call them like I see them.

Martin was consistent...not breakaway. He was a 25 carry/80-90 yard a game guy 16 games a season. The biggest mistake he ever made was falling for the snake oil Parcells was selling. New Jersey did nothing for his brand except affix it to a fanbase of trog losers. His dependability was his hallmark.

Next you're going to say Brady is just a game manager?

You've let me down, just like every father figure I've ever had.

I speak truths. There has never been a QB the likes of Tom Brady. Curtis Martin is exactly the runner I described in my previous post. Look at his career

Parcells screwed us big time by stealing Martin away. We never had a real replacement until Corey Dillon was signed in 2003.

All I know is Sony Michel has taken care of the ball so far. Can't say the same of Ridley.

My point is Sony's rookie year surpasses Ridley's rookie campaign.

Why do teams still not understand this concept?

Esikiel Elliot will suffer the same fate too.
I bet I can count on one hand the number of RBs who have produced multiple 1000 yd running and 60 catch seasons in the last 20 years.

Its great if the RB can do it as it keeps the D honest but 25 touches a game is rough.

The video took me back. Martin and Shawn Jefferson were my original favorite players back when I was just a 10 year old jitterbug.

Sure, but before we get too carried away:

Michel has 10 targets in the passing game, catching 6 for 43 yards:

10 6 43 7.2 0 13 0.8 5.4 60.0%

Barkley has 87 targets in the passing game, catching 71 for 581 yards and 4 TDs:

87 71 581 8.2 4 57 6.5 52.8 81.6%

Michel has been slightly more involved as a receiver in the past few weeks. Brady missing OTAs and Michel missing camp basically meant there was no chemistry or trust between the two so they've had to build it. That and the Patriots have arguably the best receiving back in football, so Michel's stats may have looked better if he was in a situation where the other back on the roster was Wayne Gallman instead of James White. (The Patriots also tend to rotate personnel much more than the Giants do.) I know you know all this and it's not to undermine Barkley in the passing game, I'm just defending Sony's relative lack of production in that area.

If Sony is still walking after the Jets game I believe that the Pats run game will be OK heading down the stretch.

I think his relative lack of use as a receiver has more to do with developing trust between Brady, the coaches and him that he can pickup blitzes and generally pass protect. He still sometimes looks kinda awkward doing it, which makes sense. He only has one offseason of NFL level strength and conditioning in him. A year ago he was going against other kids his age now against elite athletes.
